Purrs for Bonnie please?

She got her shots yesterday, and yesterday was fine. Today, though,
she is very lethargic and not eating. She's eaten a few pieces of dry
food (maybe a couple of mouthfuls all day) but she's usually very
piggy. I know this happens, and it happened to Shadow the last time
he got shots which is partly why he's not having any more. She was
sort of hiding this morning, but tonight she was laying at my feet,
still not eating. From now on she will get her shots spaced out
rather than all at once. I knew that was a bad idea and didn't go
with what I know.

WhenTuTu got her rabies shot this spring, she did not feel well for a
couple of weeks.

Cheryl,  I am sure she will be fine.  The shots usually affect the younger
ones, who do the same thing Bonnie is doing.  Sometimes the older ones get
affected too.  (When it's the young ones I look at it as peace and quiet!
Bad meowmie).  I would start worrying if she's still down and out tomorrow.

Best wishes and purrs coming your way

All hail the power of the purr. She was eating this morning, though
still not herself. She is much better tonight.

This is exactly what Sugar does. Usually she bounces back the next morning
after the lethargy starts. If not, I take her in. Once she had to have
fluids and spend the day at the docs, but she bounced back then. She may
done so at home as well, but I didn't want to take a chance when it went on
for two days instead of one. Purrs Bonnie is bonnie in the morning.

She was, thanks Karen. Tonight even better. Even coming up to me for
pets and sitting at my feet. I really hate it when I have to do
something that upsets her because she really goes back to almost
feral-like when she gets scared.

You got purrs; lots of 'em.

Yes, when I first got Persia and had her vaccinated the vet warned me she
would be lethargic and off her feed for a couple of days.  Now we space them
out.  Only problem with that is, extra "office visit" charge.  I didn't like
it, but now that I'm unemployed, depending on how long that lasts, it could
become an issue.  Thank goodness she's got all her shots until next spring.

I wonder why your vet is like that? I've been finding my vet
waiving office visit charges often lately. Maybe I'm in there alot?
But you bring Persia to yours for petsitting when you go out of
town. You'd think they'd work with you on office visit fees.  Maybe
since you're paying for extra services lately, you could talk to
them when the time comes for shots.  Worth asking! All they can do
is say no.  :) I hope your job situation works out for you!

Many purrs for Bonnie to start eating soon, and for you, too, Cheryl. It's

Thank you. Funny thing is, I had to practically carry her food bowl
around because if I set it down and left it down, piggy Shadow would
eat it. That probably confused her even more.

A big me too. Biskit got *so sick* when she got her vaccs. I should *never*
have let the vet administer all of them at once, given the weakened state she
was in, but I didn't want to tell him his business, you know? Next time I will.
It was too much for her. She was very mopey for 2 days but still ate okay.
OTOH, when Yoda had the reaction to the vaccines, he started throwing up almost
as soon as we got home. That was the beginning of the hepatic lipidosis ordeal.
Yoda doesn't get vaccinated anymore. Biskit and the others will only get theirs
spaced a week apart from now on.
Hope Bonnie perks up tomorrow. Let us know.

We have decided that TuTu's shots will be spaced out over a 3 year
period.  Her last rabies vac left her out of sorts for many days.  She
is indoors only but is allowed out on enclosed patio.  From time to
time, this area has strays and ferals and that is why I decided to
continue her shots.  Now that she is over 7, I am wondering if it is
necessary?  MLB

As far as I know, rabies vaccination gives only a temporary immunity,
so pets need to be vaccinated each year if they are to remain immune
to the disease.  Incidentally, if you are ever bitten or otherwise
injured by an animal behaving as if it might be rabid, and no one is
able to catch the animal so that it can be tested for rabies, it
would be a good idea to go ahead and have the treatment.  There are
no known cases of humans surviving once the symptoms show up,
regardless of what medical treatment they receive at that point.

Ya know, when you go through one episode of hepatic lipidosis, it
is so horrible you never want to let another cat get to that point
and you worry, probably needlessly, when any period of not-eating
happens. She's feeling better. Definitely will have her jabs spaced
out in the future.

Purrs going out to Bonnie for a speedy recovery.

It's not just young cats who need their shots spaced out.  Kitty
Schottland is 14 1/2 and still needs all her shots spaced out, or else
she reacts similarly to Bonnie.

Just curious here
Was the rabies a 3 year vaccine?
My vet recommended a 1 year vaccine for my cats.
She is not too sure that the three year doesn't contribute to cancer
in the cats that are pre disposed for the disease.
Just wondering on what the prevailing thoughts out there are.
Also were the shots given in the hip or on th back of the neck?

The thigh. Not sure which one, she had 3 shots. None in the neck
scruff; I don't think they do any there anymore? That's scary about
what your vet said about the 3-year. Here we think we're doing better
giving them less frequently, yet there is a cost? I wish there were

Actually, what is blamed for the VAS is not the vaccine itself, but the
coadjuvant. So, the less often you vaccinate your cat, the better off
she'll be.

I think this is one discussion where the jury is still out.
There are vets on both sides of the argument on 3 yr v. annual rabies
vaccines.
I understand the arguments on both sides. I also do not believe that
the 3 yr. has not been out long enough for a long term study on the
side effects of the vaccine, shot, coadjvuant or whatever.
Right now I am just going to go by what "the boys'" doctor recommends.
She is highly respected and keeps up with the current information that
is out there.
I have learned through bitter personal experience not to second guess
a doctor. (another long story)
Thank you all for your input.

Aw - poor Bonnie.  We just went through that with Chester too.  He's usually
down for the count for days but this time we had a small dose of prednisone
with the shots and he was only down for 24 hours.  Popped right back up
afterwards, thank goodness.  I hate to see them feeling crummy like that.

Hope she's back to her old self shortly.
