No, you didn't miss a prior post. This is the first I've written about
how I've been somewhat worried about her. She's seemed more tired than
usual, sleeping much more than she used to, and less interested in food.
She *has* been eating, but with a lot less enthusiasm. So I took her to
the vet yesterday, and he did a cursory exam, but didn't find anything
obvious.
Since Roxy has herpes, I suggested that a course of alpha interferon
might help. It didn't *look* like a typical flareup, because she didn't
have severe URI symptoms, although she has also been sneezing a lot
and her eye has been runny. I told the vet that I'm unemployed and broke,
and wanted to take a conservative route, ruling out easier (and cheaper)
stuff first. So he suggests a full blood panel, to the tune of $120 US.
Hello?? Did he not understand the meaning of *unemployed and broke*??
I said I wanted to try the interferon first, and if that didn't improve
things, then we do the blood test. But since she does in fact have a
known condition, let's look at that first!
So I got the bottle of interferon. I should have just called and asked
if I could come pick it up, rather than bringing her in - saving her
the unpleasantness of the visit and me the cost of the visit... but I
was worried. Yesterday she got her first dose. And this morning, when
I got up, she came trotting to the food area with the other two, acting
just as excited about breakfast as they were. And long after the other
two had finished eating and were off washing themselves, she was still
lapping up the bits that were left behind.
So maybe all it is is a herpes flareup - I sure hope so!!

It sounds as though you're a pretty good diagnostician. Purrs for her
improvement to continue.

Oh, Joyce, so glad your vet let you go ahead with the alpha interferon --
purrs that all continues to improve and for your $ situation as well!

Joyce,
Happy to hear Roxy seems better. Sending purrs her way for continued
improvement. And purrs to you for financial improvement (may you hit the
lottery at least).
And to a vet $120 IS cheap - especially if vet you are seeing is one of the
owners/partners! And if they specialize $120 is a drop in the bucket (one I
used to work for got a brand new sports car every two years, beautiful
house, etc). Sorry, my cynical side is showing. :) BUT, in defense of vet,
best to err on side of caution (although he could have suggested trying
interferon first then other steps if no improvement)
Best wishes and purrs to you and Roxy.

Thank you! And LOL - I would have a hard time winning the lottery, since
I never buy tickets. :) I would, however, settle for a job!

Thanks again! She's been awake and up and about a lot more today than
yesterday, so I think even that first dose was helpful.

Oh, I'm so glad it seems to be helping. I quite understand since I'm also
unemployed and basically living on John's good graces. Purrs for you and
for Roxy!

I'm glad she's already seeming better. I hope it was just a herpes flare up
or, even better yet, just a bit of a low point. Vino gets like that
sometimes, just more sleepy and listless. It usually only lasts for a day
or 2. Purrs!

Many purrs that that is the case and that she continues so well. Do you have
to keep giving her the meds? In that case, purrs to you for the medication.
I say this because Nikki has been acting up again lately with her
hyperthyroidism medicine, and it's a struggle every morning and evening to
get at least something into her.

Thank you! I think she is continuing to get better. Most of the time, all
3 cats meet me at the door when I come home. But over the past few weeks,
it's been mostly Smudge and Licky - I guess Roxy was too tired to get up
from her napping spot. Well, I went out this evening, and when I got home
tonight, she met me at the door! Along with Smudge and Licky, of course.
Yay!
> Do you have to keep giving her the meds? In that case, purrs to you

Interferon is given every day for one week. Then there's a one-week break
where no medication is given, and then another week where she gets it
every day again. Roxy's pretty easy to give meds to, especially if it's
liquid (this is). First I get it into the dropper, then bring it over to
her, grab the scruff of her neck, and turn her head to the side. I point
the dropper at her back teeth and gently worm it into her mouth, and start
depressing the syringe. Sometimes I can do it slowly, and she'll just drink
it as it's going in, and sometimes it makes more sense to just shoot the
whole thing in all at once (one ml, not that much). She swallows it either
way, and before she can react, it's all over. Not much trouble at all.

Sorry it's such a pain! Smudge is a real struggle to pill also. I can't
even imagine what it will be like to pill Licorice when that time comes -
he's *very* fussy about how he will allow himself to be touched.
Hope you can get her to calm down about it...
