bed time ritual with cats

Do you have a bed time ritual with your cats?

I like to know where my cats are before I go to bed even tho the are indoor
cats. Cinnamon has been closed in a closet more than one time or left on the
porch. Before I turn out the last light in the kitchen I always say good
night to Cinnamon and Abby and pet them. (This is a good way to count
noses.) As I head up stairs I will call them to come to bed with me. Most
nights they will get on the bed with me. Some times just for more petting
and other times they will stay all night.

Heh....if I'm up too late, Katie starts pacing, tapping me with her
paw, and mrrrp-ing at me.  *Her* bedtime ritual is to jump up on
the bed as I'm getting in, rub on me a little, knead the covers (but
I'm not supposed to touch her while she's kneading), then she jumps
off the bed to get a drink out of the bowl I have near the bed.  None
of this can happen *until* I'm in bed, according to her.  Once she's
done drinking, she'll jump back up on the bed and settle in.

Tripper insists on having the bathtub tap turned on about 20 minutes
before Katie starts pestering me.  He'll go in and drink, and Katie
will hang out in the tub with him until she decides I'm up too late.
Once she starts nagging, I go in, turn the tap off (assuming Tripper's
finished with his drink), and then it's time for bed.  Tripper may
or may not join me...sometimes he likes to sleep in the cat hammock in
the hall instead....;)

Nah....really...I'm not trained....

My RB cat Marley used to do this, not the tapping part, but he'd get
upset if I was up too late. He was such a creature of habit.

If I'm up too late, i..e. working or watching TV, Stinky starts
calling me.  If I get up, he'll scoot up the stairs, to come back down
a minute later and glare at me. ;)
OTOH, if I go up earlier than he likes, he goes downstairs and starts
walking around yelling. ;)
When I do get into bed, he always has to spend some quality time
meatloafed on my chest. ;)

Do a lot of cats do this?  The day I had Betty, she got on my chest as
soon as I went to bed.

She seemed so sure, so professional, as though she owned my body.
When I lay down, she immediately came up to me and seemed to assess
the situation like, "No need to panic; it's just a sleeping human -
I've done this a thousand times - I'll take care of it."

At first, I couldn't sleep with Betty's weight on top of me, so I
would push her off after a while, but when you're sleeping, you're
basically defenseless, so I had to get used it.  Now, she sleeps on
top of me every night.

Sometimes, when she's meatloafing on my chest at night, she looks
really alert and vigilant, like she's a dragon guarding a hoard of
treasure.  Her cool, competent stare surveys the room, and
occasionally pauses, probably killing some bug with a heart attack
induced by her baleful gaze.  She looks like the Eye of Sauron, except
scarier.  She seems to feel that she's a real pro at being on top of
her human.

Occasionally, she'll look down at my face quizzically, reach a paw out
to my nose, grab it, and twist it gently this way and that.  I don't
know why she does this, but I do know that it makes me feel like I'm
some engine part being worked on by an auto mechanic.

Me thinks you should cover your nose because that jiggling twisting
grabbing thing is worrisome. Could she be shifting gears?

Well, she does, doesn't she?

I get a backache if a cat sleeps on me too long. Fortunately, Smudge
is the cat who does this the most often, and she is the lightest of the
three. But even with her on my hip or lower back (her preferred spots,
depending on my position), I start aching after a while.

What I usually do is turn over, which usually causes her to fall or
jump off of me for a few minutes. But before she can get back on, I try
to convince her that it's comfy and cozy to sleep on the bed *next* to
me. I'll pet her until she sinks down onto the comforter, and usually
she'll fall asleep there, rather than jumping back onto my body.

Roxy sometimes sleeps on me, too, but usually on my upper back (when
I'm on my stomach). That's not as painful. She'll rest her head on the
back of my shoulder, as though she's peering over at the side of my face,
and purr in the general direction of my ear. It's really sweet!

Are you sure she's not part Siamese? That sounds like such a Meezer thing
to do.

If Smudge is the lightest, then Licorice must have gotten pretty big!
I don't think I've looked at pics of him lately.  But Betty on top of
me hurts my lower back a little, too.  Maybe I should shove a pillow
under there to take off the pressure.

Overall, she doesn't have a meezer personality.  Meezers are nose
tweakers? :)

He's a year old, and almost full grown. I think he'll probably fill out
some more - he's still a bit lanky - but I doubt he'll get any "longer".

I don't know, maybe he's still lighter than Smudge. But she's only 8 lbs
so probably not. I haven't taken him to the vet yet so I don't know his
weight. He never sleeps on top of me, or lies on me when I'm on the couch.
I guess he hasn't figured out yet that the human body is "prime real
estate" as someone else put it. He does love to curl up in my arms on my
desk while I'm on the computer. Actually, all 3 of them love to do that,
so I usually have someone purring in my face while online.

These are the latest. I took these pictures maybe 2 or 3 months ago.

They seem to like to grab things with their front paws and tweak them
or pull on them. Not that I've ever had one, but many I've known seem
to like to do that kind of stuff.

He's a sleek, beautiful kitten-cat.  He still looks like he did when
he was a kitten, but more graceful and proportioned.

He is Mr. Handsome, no doubt about that. But he's also turning into a real
sweetie. He's less skittish and doesn't run away from me as much as he used
to, and he comes over to me for attention and pets quite often, especially
when I'm seated. I think when he calms down even (as he gets older), he'll
probably be a very cuddly kitty.

Yes, didn't you know that this is what all the hip, stylin' boycats are
wearing these days? :)

Actually, I wouldn't say he does it often, but I happened to get two
pictures of it that day, so I stuck them on the site. I think he looks
so ridiculous like that, it will help prevent him from getting too
arrogant about his looks, knowing that thousands might have seen the
inside of his ear. :) (He also sits around with his tongue partway out,
which definitely spoils the "dapper" effect.)

I wish I had a better camera - the one I have now was a giveaway for
going to listen to a spiel about vacation homes, and is a cheap piece
of cr*p. That's why most of the pictures I take are kind of blurry,
over- or underexposed, or have weird colors. Recently a friend of mine
bought a new digital camera, and she said that I could have her old
one if her parents didn't want it. Unfortunately, her parents wanted
it. :( (No fair - they're really wealthy and I'm broke!! On the other
hand, they *are* her parents - can't compete with that.)

LOL! I can't keep up, because Frank has reached the age where he is more
interested in being comfortable than hip, so he doesn't follow the trends
too closely. ;o) The ear thing looks uncomfortable, but what wouldn't the
young ones suffer in the name of trendiness?

The day you had Betty?  Is there something we should know about, Tak??? ;-)

The Eye of Sauron, huh?  I'm surprised you get any sleep at all...<shudder>
And I always pictured her as such a sweet, grandmotherly cat ;-)

Wow, that's amazing!  Did she grow opposable thumbs?  If so, my condolences!

She's more of a big baby.  When she's on top of me canvassing the room
with those megawatt eyes like some angry lighthouse, it looks mighty
impressive.  You get the impression that she'll guard her post against
all comers.  But then, when I reach up to touch her, and she breaks
into a purr, that sort of breaks the spell. ;)

She stretches out her fingers and grabs, sort of like with those
spring loaded grabber things that computer technicians use to retrieve
screws.

One theory I just thought of to explain this behavior is that maybe
she's just stretching, and when she relaxes, she finds my nose
inexplicably caught, and she's saying, oh no, what did I get stuck
between my toes this time??

She's at the top of her game, obviously.

Stinky tends to hypnotize me with loud, vibrating purrs, and squinty
eyes. ;)

Well, what is it, and why do you have it right in the middle of your
face, if you don't want her to play with it? It is obviously a cat
toy. ;)
I consider nose-pawing justifiable payback from the feline world for
the times when I was tiny, and fascinated by waving pussycat tails, I
would grab and yank. ;)

Two of my six sleep with DH  most of the time. She often gets an
extra one or two, perhaps sleeping on her head or laying a paw on her
arm.  They really manage to snug her and ignore me.  My beard
snuggler, Lady Jane Grey, will often lay on my chest for a while, but
mostly the cats ignore me since they figured out that the noises Daddy
makes at night aren't exactly purring.

When Sumo wants Lynda to go to bed, he's not shy about letting
her know.  Kitty pats, mrrpps, and acting out are all indicators.
Then, the little rotter will often not join her until his energy runs
out a half hour or so later.

I have a definite bedtime ritual with Vino.  When I'm ready for bed, I track
him down and take him up to the bedroom.  I turn on the air conditioner and
close the door to the bedroom with Vino in there while I shower and get
ready for bed.  Then I go to bed and cuddle with Vino for a few minutes.
Vino usually leaves and opens the door to go downstairs.  He can pull the
door towards him when it is pretty much closed but not clicked in.  I
usually read for a while but as soon as I turn out the light, Vino comes
back and settles next to my pillow.  He curls up into a tight little ball
and rests his head on my pillow and folds both his front paws under...it's
very cute!  I lean over and give him a goodnight kiss on the head and then
we both go to sleep.

Only if you count "special water" and "Pop's pillow" a ritual.

DW has to have a humidifier at night.  Reservoir has to be filled every
other night (every night if it's dry out).  Mistletoe (Missy) *demands*
special water.  First preference is the little pool on which the humidifier
reservoir sits.  On the off nights, she has a small bowl beside the
humidifier that *must* be filled before anyone in the house gets any peace.

Smokey, OTOH, knows that when the 11:00 PM news comes on, it's feeding time.
He leads one of us into the kitchen where his food is and waits patiently
(?) by it until his nighttime snack is provided.  When he sees it put down,
he promptly turns his nose up at it and goes and gets on my pillow (his food
is mostly gone by the morning) and sacks out.  If I disturb him, he'll
grumble and turn around but won't move off the pillow unless I move him.  If
I do move him, he immediately comes back and curls around (or on) my head.

Trained?  Not me!

> Do you have a bed time ritual with your cats?

Yes, we have a bedtime tirual. When I am ready for bed, I get out the kibble
bag and Nikki comes running. Frank usually doesn't bother to come, because
he knows he will be served in bed if he doesn't show up. When I have enticed
Frank out of bed with his share of the kibble, I take the day cover off the
bed (only way to get Frank out of the way to do this). Frank eats his
kibble, but always leaves one or two pieces for Nikki, who has vacuumed her
own kibble and comes to find Frank's.

Then Frank gets a drink of water, and then I'd better be ready to get in
bed, because he hangs around the bed until I do. He has to jump into bed at
the same time as I do, then he has to trample around me several times,
purring all the while, and then he curls up around my head. Nikki comes up
and settles down by my feet at some point, when Frank has calmed down.

Definitely - Katie's usually first up on the bed, as soon as I
get my PJs out. Once I get in, the others jump up one by one and
usually cuddle up next to me. Katie and Arthur usually sleep on
opposite sides of me - if Arthur tries to settle down on Katie's
side they'll have a bit of a swearing match until one moves. Only
Violetta will actually climb on me. Simon's no longer able to
climb up on the bed himself (he's 21), so at some stage he'll
come in and meow for a lift up. It has to be when he's ready
though - if I lift him up before he asks he just jumps down
again. When I turn off the light, Simon, who feels the cold more
these days, usually gets right under the blankets with me, and we
all go to sleep in a big snoring pile.

I wrote about the cats in bed at night, but it occurs to me to
wonder if your cats have a ritual when you make or change the bed.
It's a task that can't be done around here without the inspection and
assistance of cats.  Sumo will jump up on the bed to inspect while
it's being made, but the real winner is Smokey.

When you're changing the fitted sheet, he'll dive under it as
it's being tucked in on one corner and slide under the sheet till he
has loosened another corner.  You wouldn't think a bed with only four
coroners would have to have them tucked in six or seven times

Doesn't matter if it's a daytime nap or bedtime at night; all I have to do
is call "Persia!" and she jumps up on the bed.  She likes to start off
sleeping curled in the crook of my waist with her head resting on my hip.
During the night she sometimes moves to the side of the bed, but she's a
funny little critter.  She always has to have one paw touching me, or me
touching one paw.  I'll roll over on my side and take one of her front paws
in my hand.  She wraps the other around my hand and gently lays her head on
top.  Such a sweetie!

My three are all different.
Antonio the youngest will get into bed when I do.
He then proceeds to get between me and the edge of the bed, facing the
foot so I get a lovely view of his backside.
Tito the middle child, will come to bed and kneed me for a while then
settle down at the foot of the bed. After a while he turns into a
puddle of fur stretching all his length across the foot of the bed.
Figaro, the oldest thinks that this is the perfect time to reclaim
"his" recliner, Sometime in the night he'll come into bed ad sleep on
the other side of me. Sometime during the night they will all get
together into a big pile of fur. It looks kind of odd. Three heads, 12
legs three tails and all different colors of fur ranging from black to
white, silver tan and brown.
Mischief - 12 Jun 2004 04:38 GMT
I just turn off the lights in the living room and head for my bedroom.
Now, no matter what time of year it is, I have to open the bedroom
window at some point so the kitties can smell the night air.

I also have to fluff up my pillows near the window.  It allows Imp to
climb up and sit on the windowsill.  :)  This is a cat that doesn't
like to jump.  I even have a box next to the toilet, cause he likes to
drink out of the toilet.

Mischief will usually inspect the window first.  Then if I'm reading
she has to rub against the book.  If I'm watching TV she has to jump
onto the dresser and sit in front of the TV.

When the lights go out, the cats look out the window, settle on the
corner of the bed or right behind me, munch food, chase each other
around; not necessarily in that order.  :)

Cats love familiar rituals, although Pan could do without the new
ritual which calls for me sticking a pill down his little gullet every
night.  But he's an old cat,(16, now) and he has a hyperthyroid
problem, so he'll be on his meds for the rest of his life.  The rest
of the bedtime ritual is more pleasant.  After I've washed my face,
brushed my teeth and put on my jammies, I like to read for a while
before turning off the light, as it helps me slow down and get sleepy.
That is, I read in theory, only. After a page or two,Pan comes over
and lays his head and front paws on the book and gazes up at me
soulfully until I give up on reading and stroke him.  After he's had
his massage, if it's a cold night, he likes to burrow under the top
comforter, although he doesn't like to be between the sheets. If it's
a milder night, he just climbs on top of me, and goes into the
meatloaf act.  But he has a nice, deep rumbly purr, and this is one of
our favorite moments of "face time." Recently, his favorite place to
sleep through the night is on top of the covers and about level with
my left hip.

Francesca, my six-month old newcomer whom I've had for three weeks
also has a cat's intuitive understanding that Mother Must Not Be
Allowed to Read. She and I are still working out our nighttime
rituals, and it appears she loves to get ALL the way under the covers,
and heads for my feet as if she's exploring the Lascaux Caves. She
also knows how to be a cat meatloaf, and luckily, she's realized I
mean it when I say "no bites."

The late beloved Isadora would seldom begin the night with  Panther
and me, but she was always there by morning. She was an  excellent
furry alarm clock, as she would sit by my pillows and bleat at short,
regularly timed intervals until I got up and did my feeding duty.  I
never DID find her snooze bar. =o)
