Where does your kitty like to hide?

Tigger - 07 Jun 2004 22:59 GMT When Cali was younger she liked to play hide and seek.
We have a dresser that has the drawers raised 6" off the floor, with a scalloped front covering the space. This leaves a perfect space for a devious cat to hide, as we found out. One day we were calling Cali for about half an hour with no luck. Finally we saw this nose moving back and forth under the dresser. I just know she was killing herself laughing. Stupid Hoomins.
Smokey doesn't play hide and seek, but loves to den up to sleep. When we first got her we kept her in a small room at night, away from Cali. The first morning we opened the door to let her out, but there was no Smokey to be found. There was nothing in the room but an ironing board, her litter an an old TV. We finally discovered that the old TV had a small hole in the base of the cabinet.
Smokey also likes to sleep under the comforter on the bed, with or without people. She gets under the comforter on the floor and then jumps on the bed with the comforter on top of her. She then burrows around until she finds a good spot. If the bed is made, she usually ends up between the pillows. Took us a while to find her the first time.

They own the house. ;) When I first brought tiny Mimi (RB) home, she hid under my bed, and other furniture for a day or two, then came out, and started running things right away. Stinky never hid from day one.

Dan M - 08 Jun 2004 03:10 GMT Sammy likes to crawl under the bed and get on top of the storage boxes there. Amelia likes to get down behind the couch. We still haven't found Tabitha's hiding place. When she goes into hiding she if untraceable! We've scoured the entire house and still haven't found where she gets off to.
Tigger - 08 Jun 2004 03:43 GMT > Sammy likes to crawl under the bed and get on top of the storage boxes > there. Amelia likes to get down behind the couch. Smokey likes to sleep under the couch, when she's not burrowing somewhere. I'm not sure how she get in there at 12 pounds, but she does manage.

Steve Touchstone - 08 Jun 2004 04:34 GMT When anyone knocks on the door both girls take off for the bedroom - not to hide but to look out the window which has a perfect view of the door. If it's someone they know and like, they come back and greet the visitors. Otherwise LB stays in the bedroom and Sammy sits in the bedroom doorway and observes. If Rocky happens to be inside, he sits about three feet from the door and usually darts out as soon as it's opened. There's only a couple people he sticks around to greet.
For those times they want to hide, Sammy's current hideout is under the bedspread, and LB's is under the bed - though she sometimes just goes under the bed and naps for the heck of it. Rocky doesn't really have a hideout inside, guess he stills feels safer outside.

There's only a couple people he sticks around to greet. The girls don't care too much about visitors. Cali used to greet them when she was younger, but now that she has seen it all, she does not bother. She does do the window trick though. If she sees something interesting out the downstairs window, she'll run upstairs to get a better view from the upstairs window.

He only does this when he has gotten scolded.

ARRGH. Booty does this. I think she's in a box of sweaters on the top of the closet. I haven't seen her there, but the sweaters have hair all over them.

CATherine - 08 Jun 2004 03:12 GMT Djoser's favorite hiding place is underneath the big, heavy old tv console. (It is defunct but does good at holding modern tv and vcr, etc.) It has a 6 inch high space under the main body of it. That was Djoser's home when we first brought him home scared of anything and everything. He still retreats there every so often.
Between the back of my desk and the kitchen stove is a folded gateleg table with a tablecloth hanging down. Way back in the corner by the stove under the table is Amber's hidey-hole; reached from under the desk. Once he retreats to that hole, there is no getting him out for hairball remedy! He hates that stuff and hides if I even think about giving him some!
Sheba goes into my closet and hides on top of the box under my clothes. (I started putting my clothes in zipper bags to keep the bottoms from being so hairy).
Robin doesn't have a hidey hole; he isn't scared of anything and doesn't seem to need time alone.
A few years ago, Amber, in particular would hide under the bed and sometimes up in the box springs. One time he was in the springs when i sat on the bed. Talk about a strangled squeal! After that i arranged my shoe boxes and under-bed boxes so they can't get under there anymore.

Bonnie hides under my bed. If someone comes in the house, she is gone. My mother, so far, is the only person who comes over and Bonnie doesn't completely hide; she'll go to my bedroom and wait to see if she really needs to hide.
Shamrock doesn't normally hide, but lately since I put him and Bonnie downstairs when I go to work to keep Shadow from stressing, he will go to the den where one of the litterboxes is in the morning when I go looking for him.
Shadow never hides, but if he does, he is really not feeling well. Last year I came home late one night and couldn't find him anywhere. For an hour I searched, ran outside calling in case he got out, and finally found him in a swivel chair that was facing the wall, in the dark. Not like him to not come when called. Now his "hidey spot" is under the dining room table, but I wouldn't call that hiding. He probably does, though.

Yes, the bed is the only place Cali really hides. The rest of the time she is denning or playing a game with us. She thinks it's funny to hide behind the sheers when you're calling her. Little does she know we can see her bulging.

He probably does, though. Cali's a don't bother me cat. Even though she comes to bed at night for a couple of hours to be sociable. When it's time to do some serious sleeping, she'll take herself someplace dark and quiet. Smokey is a people cat who sleeps in bed all night and stays up all day. She gets less sleep than I do most days.

(I started putting my clothes in zipper bags to keep the > bottoms from being so hairy). Cali has started doing this lately, hoping Smokey won't find her. She also likes body smells. After a bath she'll practically rip your armpits out, sniffing you up. Also loves to bury her head in your shoes and dig out the insoles. Just don't create any other smells in bed, or you'll get a disapproving look ("That's what the litterbox is for") and she'll be gone.
But now that Summer is here, she will soon return to her basket chair in the basement.

Cali only hides under the bed when she's scared (tinfoil) or perhaps waiting to counter attack Smokey.
> -- > CATherine JPHobbs - 13 Jun 2004 03:32 GMT And Wilson hides under my bed, in a large wooden wheeler box that held a lot of stuff, like smaller boxes of cards letters and so on, I finished up finding new homes for most of the stuff and putting an old thick baby quilt in one half, and he spends a lot of time there, If company comes, he's under there like a rocket faster than the speed of light. He sleeps on top of our wardrobe in the bedroom, there isn't that much room between the top and the ceiling. We also have a tall shelf in the living room on top of which he likes to hide. Smokey is a burrower. She'll be running at top speed and the next thing you know she is 3 feet under the rug. She does this so quickly, we don't know if she uses her nose or paws to get started. She has always done this. The amazing thing is that she has very long legs, making this trick all the more difficult. Although she is sorta torpedo shaped, small pointy head and big butt.
Cali likes to sleep in drawers or the open wardrobe. She's been locked in a couple of times, which she thinks is a good thing. :-)

Marina - 08 Jun 2004 05:26 GMT Frank doesn't exactly hide, but when he "vants to be alone" he retires to the top of the bookcase. It's a good hiding place if you don't know about it. One time, I was away overnight and my Mum went to feed the cats in the morning. She looked high and low for Frank but couldn't find him, and was getting worried that he had slunk out the door when she came in. It turned out she hadn't looked high enough. When she finally looked up on top of the bookcase, there was Frank, watching her looking for him. Sometimes, when he really wants peace, he will go behind the books on a shelf.
Nikki has her own personal black hole somewhere. She brought it with her when we moved. There is no other explanation for how she can disappear so completely. Only the sound of kibble hitting the floor will bring her out of it.

Ron Z - 08 Jun 2004 14:45 GMT Princess likes to hide in the top shelf of my closet. To get there she has to negotiate a series of shelves on the end of the closet, then crawl across a bunch of hangers holding my (once) good clothes, then she makes herself at home on top of a bunch of old sweatshirts. She does this at the first sign of a stranger in the house.
Penny the Cat sometimes tries to hide behind my shoes but she's too big and ultimately too nosy to hide for long. :-)

Exocat - 08 Jun 2004 18:37 GMT I wish I could tell you, but only big Pericles the red tabby Maine Coon ever bothers to hide and I've never managed to find him yet. To make contact with him I have to go to the kitchen and make the appropriate food preparation noises and then he magically appears from his chosen dimension.
A quick trip up to the Mothership, perhaps?

> When Cali was younger she liked to play hide and seek. Melissa Houle - 14 Jun 2004 01:16 GMT > When Cali was younger she liked to play hide and seek. The late beloved Isadora was extremely fond of the below counter level kitchen cabinet where I kept my mixing bowls and baking pans. It wasn't really a hiding place as such, as I knew quite well she was in there--I was always the one who had to open the cupboard door for her. Of course, she liked ALL cupboards, the cupboard under the kitchen sink, the linen cupboard, anything with closed doors She also loved my laundry basket when it got nice and full. Plenty of softness to lie on, and a draught-free hiding place, too. As a kitten though she also liked to hide under my barcalounger in the living room. When I got home from a three week trip last september, I found her hiding in the under works of the chair.
Pan doesn't seem to need to hide, and Francesca, my little newcomer is pretty bold, too.
