Barn kittens update 3

Annie Wxill - 07 Jun 2004 00:06 GMT This morning Christine took some food to the barn for the mother cat. She saw the cat exit the barn as she entered. Then she heard a little hiss and looked in the dark place between a couple of bales of hay. Sure enough, she saw a pair of tiny glowing eyes. She put on her gloves and reached in and pulled out kitten number 6! This one is a gray and white version of the black and white tuxedo siblings. I'm glad the kittens are safe and caught when they are young enough to tame, but sad for the mother cat who probably is calling for her babies. She did a good job. They look clean and healthy. We'll see if any more show up. Annie

Sure would be nice if momma could be caught so she could have more time with the babies, then spayed and found a home. Unfortunately, some cats just seem to be impossible to catch - as I know from trying and failing to trap Rocky when he was feral. Eventually, I had to wait until he was pretty much tame before I was able to nab him.
I guess this is about the best time for your daughter to have found the kittens. They're young enough to be socialized fairly easily, yet old enough so that it's not TOO bad if they're separated from Mom. Still, I hope to hear in some future update that momma cat has be captured and reunited with her babies.

Hi Steve, The plan is to trap the mother cat and have her spayed as soon as possible. Christine has a co-worker who has a trap she can borrow, and she has to make arrangements with a vet who is used to dealing with not totally tame cats. She wasn't able to do either of those things over the weekend. Originally, she was hoping to give the babies more time with the mother, but when the mother cat moved them, Christine was concerned that the babies would rapidly become harder, if not impossible to catch, so she took them when she got a second chance. She will continue to put food and water out in the barn so the mother cat will hang around, but by the time she gets the trap and lines up the vet, the cat might not want her kittens back, anyway. Sometimes you just have to do the best you can with the circumstances. Thank you for your concern and support. Annie

I ended up making and breaking a couple appointments for Rocky's neutering, since he was still kind of wild at the time. Then, when I finally napped him he had to stay at the clinic the night before surgery, since he wasn't supposed to eat or drink anything. Like Britta, momma kitty may become tame. When Rocky was neutered he was supposed to go to a friend as a barn cat. I kept him here to make sure he recovered OK, and ended up keeping him.

Annie Wxill - 07 Jun 2004 15:50 GMT > Cool! I hope it all works out. Maybe the mom cat will become a quite tame > outdoor cat. That would be nice :-) > -- > Britta That is a possibility. My daughter has the impression that the cat is not a feral, but rather a former pet who was dumped in the area. She's not friendly, but she's not as spooked as a feral. She has been taking good care of her babies, and looks good herself, so she must be very resourceful. I guess you could say she's independent right now. Anyway, Christine doesn't mind having a barn cat, but is upset with whoever is responsible for the kitten situation. She said she'd love to give them a bill. Annie

I know she was someone's cat, since I'd seen her the previous summr wearing a flea collar. I let her inside out of an icestorm and looked for the owners, but no one claimed her. Their loss was definitely my gain. I got both LB and Sammy, who was born about a week after LB moved in.

Sounds like serious bonding going on there.

If Christine were not renting and didn't already have two dogs and a horse, she probably would be sure to keep him. She had a cat, who died before she got the second dog, so I know she has that vacancy and is vulnerable to Buddy's charm. I also wonder if her former cat hasn't sent him to her, but I'm not going to say anything to influence her. It will be her decision. I have volunteered to pay for the spay for the mother cat. I'll probably send some other financial help to get vet care for the babies. They most likely will need worming and who knows what else. I hope the homes she has tentatively lined up come through. Of course, she has to find homes for six now, instead of five. (Unless she keeps Buddy.) It's so hard for me to be so far away. Annie

> Oh, I think a motherly nudge would be just the thing here. ;o) > Marina, Frank and Nikki It's a head vs. heart thing. I'm concerned that as a renter she will have a difficult time finding another place if she has to move with so many pets. If we were in the same town, we could help if she needed a place to stay or temporarily stash the furkids, but we are 2,000 miles away. I'm also concerned that her resources are stretched, so I don't want to encourage her to take on more than she can handle alone. I believe she will make the right choice, whatever that is. It will need to be her decision and I will support whatever she decides and back her however I can. Annie
JoJo - 07 Jun 2004 22:34 GMT Goodness, yet another kitten??? If you come back with yet another kitten I'm going to start thinking mama is rounding up all the strays in the neighborhood so Christine can find them homes! :)
Ahhh, it's so hard to say no. As you know I'm a sucker for a furry face, so I will keep my two cents out on whether she should or should not keep!
If she were here I could offer her fostering help, but there's many more miles between us. Please offer her my assistance if she has questions, happy to help.
Congrats to you as a "foster gran-meowmie" :)

Poor Christine, I guess the cat noticed the "sucker" stamp on her forehead. As for the fostering, I think the hard part is that she is not associated with a group to help her with the expenses and with placing the kittens, in case the initial offers don't work out. I know she had a busy day at work, but I hope she finds time to give me or call or send me an email update. I want to know how that little gray one is doing and if Christine has done more introductions to the dogs. It's a good thing she kept all the stuff, even the kitten stuff, from her departed cat. I'll let her know to contact you if she has any questions. Thanks for the offer. Annie

Depending on the organizations in the area, some rescue groups may have the resources to help her out financially as long as she agrees to provide the temporary home while foreverhomes are found. Many rescue groups obtain grant money for community programs (and if they don't, they should!! Google "animal welfare grant" for all of the programs out there. PetSmart Charities is one of many) and the care of stray/feral cats falls under many of them. Particularly neutering. Purrs to your daughter for all she is doing.

I'll pass the information on. So far she's solved the neutering puzzle for the mother cat (see update 4).
Cheers, Annie

JPHobbs - 13 Jun 2004 03:12 GMT I've not been able to post on rpca for a while so I have missed quite a lot it sounds as though Christine has recently lost a beloved cat, If I have that right,I send Purrs for Christine and the lost love, but maybe this poor cat in the barn * is* stealing Kitties, to give to Christine to help heal her heartache, if I'm wrong, well it's a nice thought to hold on to anyway Jean.P.

Jean, that is a nice thought. Christine's cat died about a year ago, and of course, she still misses her. However, she had no trouble placing all the kittens, and has trapped and vetted and spayed the mother cat, who will be able to continue living in the barn. Annie
