Magic Mood Jeep? - 05 Jun 2004 17:36 GMT Eenie is getting HUGE, has the appetite of a lion, and has to be fed separately or else she growls and pushes the others away from the food dish (they are eating a mix of canned kitten food and powdered KMR)
Meanie still has the sore on her paw, but it is getting better. No word on the culture, but I doubt it's ringworm as she's the only one that has it, not even us slaves have any sign of it (although I do have a skin allergy - dust makes me itch - and the mention of ringworm made me feel like I had slept in a bed of poison ivy, but then I remembered I hadn't taken my allergy meds for a 2 days (oops), so I took it and itching went away).
Minnie had a bout of diarrhea, threw up & didn't want to eat (acted like she did, but then only nibbled). In the matter of 36 hours, she lost a LOT of weight - I was calling her Skinny Minnie, so off to the vet we went, he took a rectal swab (she did NOT like that, screamed bloody murder & bit me (no damage, but I felt teeth)), and said there's nothing dangerous, just an over-abundance of the normal bacteria. He gave her an injection of sub-q fluids, and she gets liquid antibiotics 2x daily, followed within 2 hours of Bene-Bac to replace what the anti's kill. She also gets a mix of baby food (chicken flavor is the way to go - I have yet to find a cat that won't eat CHICKEN) and powdered KMR - mixed until it's like peanut butter - so that she gets her weight back up. She is eating the others food now too. And she's getting that round-kitten-belly back, within a few hours of her first dose of anti's & a big meal, she was chasing & wrestling with her sisters. Her & Meanie have been able to climb over the cardboard in the doorway, but since we don't want Meanie (and there fore any of the others) getting out until we know for sure if it's ringworm, we put in a higher piece of cardboard. They're not too happy about that.
Moe is, well, Moe. Not quite as voracious appetite as Eenie, but still a good eater. She's also somewhat of a loner, and doesn't like to be held as much as the others (the others LOVE being cradled on their backs & getting tummy rubs while being baby-talked to, but Moe doesn't). She still curls up with her sisters, and plays with them, she's just not a cuddle-bug
On another note, I have started announcing my presence when entering the bedroom (since it always scares them) by saying "KITTENSkittenskittenskittenskittens... Where are all my kittens?", and when they use the litterbox (it gets changed every other day, since there's 4 using it), I have begun singing a slightly modified tune from South Park. I think the episode was called Chef Aid - where Chef sues a major record company because Alanis Morriset has released a song called Stinky Britches that Chef claims he wrote 10+ years ago. Well - I've changed it to Stinky Kittens... I've got stinky kittens ;). I've got to do something to retain what little sanity I have left.
As for the job woes - union at DH plant is still on strike, but things have calmed down. No more overturned (& burning) cars (they are trying to blame those on teenagers from other towns that were there just to cause trouble - but you'd think the strike organizers would have better control and kept those kind out, so I have my doubts), especially, since several people were arrested by the STATE police (city police are stretched to the max, and find it hard to interfere since they have friends & family on both sides) and charged with disorderly conduct, trespassing (when asked to step OFF company property & to remain on the sidewalk, they didn't) and I think resisting arrest (when they got belligerent over getting arrested for trespassing). They union on strike is IUE-CWA, and they are now getting support from the UAW people that are employed at a different factory in that town. Meanwhile DH is pulling 12 + hour days, and spent Thursday night there, and will probably stay there until Monday (in addition to his sleeping bag, he now has a cot - I was going to buy an air mattress, but the cot was less expensive), so he's getting all sorts of overtime pay (the ONE good thing about all this).

Magic Mood Jeep? - 05 Jun 2004 18:15 GMT Weebles is getting lazy (he's 10 months old this month), and Lizzie, Tennessee & Smokey are all doing fine, albeit a bit put off by their 'visitors' - even though they are Weeble's baby (half?) sisters.

<snip kitten update> Glad to hear they're doing well, Sending purrs for that the ailing babies are both on the mend - and no ringworm when the culture gets back. When LB had her kittens, and they started exploring, I, too, first blocked off the kitchen with cardboard. Then added a second, taller piece. When they got big enough that they were jumping on the counters I surrended and let them have the run of the apartment. Sammy, BTW, was usually the first one to try new things, and the first to get out. She've never liked being picked up or cuddled, though she always purrs when you pick jer up, shes ready to get down after a few seconds.

I've always been of two minds about unions. I think they were major part of raising the standard of living for workers. My Dad was a union man, and they have certainly helped him and our family over the years. OTOH, they sometimes go over the line, not just violence during strikes, but trying to protect jobs that have been become obsolete. Course, I don't know if that's the reason your plant management is stopping production that fuel module thingy that is causing the loss of jobs - could be that they decided it would be cheaper to have it made out of the country and shipped in. Hope they can get some arbitrators in who can work out an equitable end to the strike.

I'm not ambivalent about whether unions should exist - I think they should - but I do have very mixed feelings about how they operate in our country (and perhaps others as well) today. There's so much corruption in them, and many of the big unions don't really protect workers. They're either cozied up to management, or they're in it for their own gains.

JoJo - 06 Jun 2004 00:43 GMT I had to laugh on the ringworm - I was just at the shelter picking up one foster and questioning if I could take this sweet little girl kitten home to foster too. Oh, what a little lover she was, tech said ringworm test was negative. Well turns out that they really weren't so sure about that, so that's why she was still there. The tech and I started scrubbing ourselves down with antibac hand gel - arms, hands and face. We both felt itchy :)
For the kitty with diarrhea you can try lactobacilus acedophelus (sp?) - get it from GNC. It's in capsule form, break it open and sprinkle a little on the food. They can't taste it. It is supposed to balance out the bacteria in the digestive tract (or so my vet says).
One of the fosters I have now has the runs - so bad they are dragging their butt and leaving trails. Off to the shelter we go tomorrow. Hoping to get a stool sample to take with me, so he's sequesterd, which makes me feel bad, I hear him crying for attention. However I've had to wash my sheets TWICE today. Little bugger can get out of the ex pen, don't have the heart to put him in dog crate, so for now he's in bathroom, until bedtime. Here's hoping I don't have to wash the sheets again tomorrow!
Enjoy the little ones while you can. It's so sad to say goodbye. Glad to hear all are well and healthy!

I double checked the other three, and they have no, um, extras in that area. I guess that explains her- I mean HIS aggressive eating habits, and also why she- HE is bigger than the others. It's kinda strange, because Weeble was born with well-developed... cajones, for lack of a better word, but Eenie's just suddenly seemed to appear, overnight.

I suspected from the beginning that one or two of the kittens that weren't tricolors would turn out to be boys. I guess that's what they call undescended testicles. Eenie knew he had to eat a lot in order to force them to pop out. :)
They're all such cuties!
Magic Mood Jeep? - 06 Jun 2004 20:27 GMT They are all eating like crazy now - I'm waiting for one to explode at the food dish ;) Them little bellies get so big & tight, I'm almost afraid to pick them up for feat that they will pop when I do so!

Oooops! LOL! Well, it's good that Eenie is one of those names that could fit a boy or a girl :-) -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur!
