I usually spend the early morning sitting in the recliner next to the
open glass door into the back yard with coffee and newspaper.

The cats will come and go as they see fit and will often just pause on
the porch to see what we are doing inside.  And I'll talk to them when they
pass by.

This morning was not exceptional in any way.  A saw a blur out of the
corner of my eye and figured it was Rosie, so said "Hi Sweetie" as I often
do.

And then realized it was actually the utility meter reader looking at me
rather strangely.

Didn't someone else recently do something very similar? I guess this isn't
an uncommon mistake. Makes me glad that I live in an apartment, where nobody
would come in unless I knew about it! :)

As long as you didn't have Barry White on the stereo, I think you
might have been OK. ;)

ROFL!!  That's hilarious, Jo.  So glad I'm not the only one who does
things like that.  I have a feral I feed outside my apartment and of
course I talk sweet to her when I come out.  I wandered out one
morning in my robe to feed her, was telling her what a cutie she was,
etc and looked up to see a neighbor walking by with this strange look
on his face.  I quickly tried to explain about the cat (which he
couldn't see) and he just nodded and said okaaaayyyy like he didn't
believe me or something.....

I'm just glad I didn't say anything worse than HiYa Sweetie.  And that I was
more or less clothed.

A house is not a home, without a cat.

I went out on my screened porch one summer afternoon looking for one
of my cats, calling out "Hey, Fuzzybutt!" as I walked out the door
onto the porch.  My cat wasn't out there, but a man standing on the
sidewalk in front of my house turned around and gave me a very odd
look!

When I want to get my cat Figaro in th house at night I stand on the
back deck and call Figaro, Figaro, Figaro and I try to make it sound
like the opera song.
Well one day I was doing that and my neighbor yelled out "My God he is
singing again!"
That's the last time I did that.
Now I just yell "kitty treats" and all the cats come running

Ok, people, beverage warnings, where oh where are they these days.  That
is hysterical.

LOL!  I actually read a similar incident in CatFancy. This woman was
in her kitchen, and she heard a sound similar to the one her cat
usually made out on the porch.  Assuming it WAS the cat, she started
calling him by his very silly pet name and asked him if he wanted his
supper.

"Actually Ma'am, I just need you to sign for a package," said the UPS
guy.

My own embarrasing incident of this nature happened a while ago.  I
was bringing in a second load of groceries from my car, walking along
the path by the fenced in pool.  The fence was just high enough so
that you could see a person's head and shoulders above it, but
everything else was hidden by fence and hedge. Isadora and Pan had
followed me out to the car  and were right behind me on the way back.
I was calling to them, talking a lot of nonsense about "Kitty Supper"
with plenty of silly endearments mixed in. The couple sunbathing by
the pool just saw that nutty lady with the cats, talking aloud to
herself as she walked past a very public area of the apartment
complex. NOT my finest hour when it comes to impressing my neighbors.
=o)
