Magic Mood Jeep? - 01 Jun 2004 16:32 GMT
One of the 4 kittens I'm fostering, Meanie, has developed a sore on the
bottom of one of her paws - it doesn't seem to bother her, but it has me
worried (in addition to a bald spot on her shoulder that was created by an
overzealous sister in one of their tussles).  She goes to TED this
afternoon.  DH says"'all the money we're spending on them we otta keep 'em"
He's a big softie when it comes to pretty little kitties.  However, we can
not really afford to keep them (the factory where he works, the union
members have gone on strike, all salaried empl. are working the production,
AND disassembling equipment and shipping it out as they will be shutting
down the plant if contract is not reached).  He had an interview on Friday
at a Toyota plant downstate, but it's a 2-hour drive, so we'd have to
relocate.  However, while falling asleep, DH did mumble that if plant DID
stay open, we were keeping the Fearsome Foursome, and I mumbled back my
approval.

Purrs for Meanie!  She's such a sweet little gal.  Mega PURRS for DH's job
situation to reach an amicable settlement.

We are sending heartfelt purrs that the plant will stay open and that
the four will remain where they are happy.

Let me know what TED says. Yoda has had a sore on the bottom of his paw for
months now and the vet is rather blowing it off, I think. He says it's just the
cat-equvalent of a wart, but I don't like the looks of it.

DH says"'all the money we're spending on them we otta keep 'em"

This is a major statement, if it were coming from my DH. I'd say "OK, let's
do!!"

It's known as the Theory of Formative Causation.  The theory goes that once
someone comes up with an idea, suddenly it's "out there" for anyone else in
the world to think of, too.  You just have to be the first person to
copyright, patent, etc.

I remember back around 1985 coming up with a mixture of pure fruit juice and
club soda (or seltzer water) to make these non-fat freshing beverages with
no added sugar.  I was making them at home on a regular basis with pure
apple juice, cranberry, like that.  Next thing I know, they're on the market
and selling like grits sell in a Southern diner. :)  I blame the Theory of
Formative Causation and my own stupidity for not patenting the idea.  Whoda
thunk it? :o)

keeping the kitties , get it on tape...that way...when it's decided to keep
the plant open..he can't say he didn't say this! (WINK!) :-) Liz

Believe me, he REALLY wants to keep them.  He plays with them as much as he
can - but I'm the one that feeds them, changes their litter, and has to
discipline them when they all want to be up on the bed, but also want to
wrestle.  Ever try to sleep with 4 wrestling kittens in your bed?  I kept
putting them on the floor until they finally calmed down and slept on the
kitty window sear.

Bad news:  Dr. thinks it's the dreaded "R": Ringworm!  both the bald spot on
her shoulder & her paw (and it's the bottom of her right front paw, right
behind the main pawpad).  We're having a culture done & have gotten a
fungicide to use just in case (no sense waiting to find out that, and then
it's REALLY bad)

Good news: She's the only one that seems to have it.  Although Lizzie does
have a spot on her lower jawline, I though was a scratch from Weeble, but
now I'm not so sure... giving her a dab of fungicide too just in case.

No to go stock up on hand sanitizer - do they sell that in 50 gallon
drums???

Not that I'm aware of. One tip I picked up from a vet: human athlete's
foot medicines [Tinactin and such] work just fine on ringworm. I
actually had a vet suggest we go that route when we had an outbreak
among about four cats at once.

Oh, my...  I've just been through this.  I adopted a kitty from the
shelter that had a bad case of ringworm.  Ming had it all over his face
(right down into the nostrils) and several large (quarter-sized)
lesions on his legs, chest and neck.  He had it bad enough that TED
didn't think the topical fungicide would be effective (especially since
it was all around his eyes), so he was on an oral medication for 6
weeks.  There's a compounding pharmacy that did a tuna flavored liquid
for him.  Ming didn't exactly LIKE it, but he tolerated it.  I had to
bathe him 3 times a week for 2 weeks (he didn't like that, either...),
and keep him out of the bedrooms.  I put towels and sheets over the
floor and furniture in all the areas of the house that he liked to hang
out and washed them in bleach every 2-3 days.

Keep an eye on the rest (and on yourself...).  About 2 weeks after we
got Ming, I developed 4 small spots the size of a pencil eraser, and
the dog had a spot on his nose and one near his eye.  The dog and I got
by with a topical creme.  Luckily no one else in the house showed any
sign of it.  The main thing is DON'T STOP TREATMENT TOO SOON!!.
Apparently the fungus spoors can be active for a couple of months once
they've gotten into the environment, so it can come back.  It's easily
treated, but you've got to be persistent.

Ugh, ring worm :-(  I had that when I was 16.  Don't know how I picked it
up.  We had an outdoor cat but he never had it.  Very weird.  But it all
started with a 1 inch diameter perfect circle above my ankle.  There were 4
small circles inside of it.  It was really itchy and I put Tinactin on it
(that athlete's foot cream).  But putting it on made it spread and soon I
had circles all over my legs!  It was horrible, I had to keep my legs
covered and couldn't go swimming, etc.  It took a couple of months to get
rid of it all.
I would definitely recommend isolating Meanie from the other cats and make
sure you use tons and tons of that hand sanitizer!

I hope Meanie's OK! It doesn't sound serious, but it's worth checking out.

And I hope the union gets a good contract so everyone can go back to work!!
This kind of thing can take a long time, though - it's really tough. If you
have to move, will you take the FF with you?

And if you keep them, how many cats will you have? 6? 7? I'm losing track...
