I woke up at 3 am to the sound of rain and distant thunder. D'oh! I was
wide awake instantly and jumped out of bed and raced downstairs to unplug
the phone line going to the computer. Storms have fried 2 of my modems
already, they are *not* getting a third!
The storm was moving fast because just as I was unplugging the line, the
house lit up from all 4 directions and the thunder boomed overhead like an
explosion at the same time. I snatched my hand away from the phone cable.
Vino jumped. I heard a squeak and a hiss from outside and smelled burning
matches. U-oh. I looked out the window but right at that moment there was
another bolt of lightning and it was so bright, it totally blinded me. For
a while I couldn't see anything but bright dots dancing before my eyes.
I decided to go back to bed and hide under the blanket with Vino. I'm so
much more of a wuss when Dennis isn't here. So Vino and I cuddled while the
storm raged on for hours. I think I fell asleep just as it was getting
light out at 6-ish. Ended up sleeping in until 9 with no complaints from
Vino.
This morning I looked out to survey the damages, but can't see anything that
the lightning could have struck! Weird. Maybe it's one street over, I'll
have to go for a walk later on. At least I still have my modem working this
morning :-)

That does sound scary. Glad you and Vino are safe.

Correction to previous: I thinked you wuz in Germany. The advice that you
should get a surge/spike supressing line filter still applies.

I have that. I have a UPS and it is great! Just this morning we were
having all sorts of weird brown outs and it really helps with that.
But my modem gets fried through the phone line. The UPS has a phone filter
too but that broke last year. The warranty has expired and I don't want to
buy another UPS just for the phone part. So I'm trying to unplug the phone
before going to bed, but I often forget.

Glad to hear you are O.K. and the modem still works.
We had a similar experience once. Why do those things always happen at
about 3 a.m.? At least it was one of the nights when Jim was home.
The lightning was like a bright white laser flash. The thunder was
immediate, an enormous boom like I've never heard. We heard a sizzling
sound downstairs and saw a flickering light from the stairs. I was
gathering up kitties, in case we had to evacuate for a fire. Jim went
downstairs to investigate, and saw the T.V. had turned itself on and the
image on the screen was moving diagonally at a rapid pace. He unplugged the
T.V.
Luckily, there was no fire, but it fried that T.V. and a video and the
circuits to our garage door and our security system.
It was amazing how calm we were, though, but we didn't get much sleep the
rest of the night and were glad when morning came.

Yes, these storms are just crazy. Being in a tropical latitude for the past
3 years, I'm used to severe thunderstorms and torrential rains. But this is
beyond that, it's like being in a war zone. And we've had 2 in the last
month or so! And it's not even the rainy season yet...that starts in July.
I'm worried about how bad it will be then!

??? Why don't you using a line filter; a good one will stop all spikes &
surges. Or aren't they available there in Germany?

Man! You have some wild storms there! That kind of lightening can
literally curl your hair. Years ago, when i was sitting in an enclosed
porch (another place I lived) facing away at the moment a lightening
bolt struck the steel gate post to our yard fence. It was maybe 15
feet from me. Like yours, it was beyond brilliant and loud. I was
blinded and deafened and totally scared.
