Frank has been fighting, has gotten an abscess on his side/shoulder. I took him
to T.E.D. this afternoon, just expecting him to clean it, give us antiobiotic
and send us on our way. Instead, he wanted to sedate him to debride it more
thoroughly and probably put a drain in it. So he stayed. I wish I'd brought him
back home with the agreement I'd bring him back very early in the a.m. He will
just hate so bad being in the cage all night. I bet he yowls his Siamese little
self hoarse.

Many purrs coming over to your Frank from my Frank, and from Nikki, too.
Soothing vibes from me.

Purrs for Frank - and worried meowmie!

I know a body abscess can be more serious and require more invasive
treatment, but our old Siamese had so many, first from some injuries and
later from trying to beat up anything on four feet within a mile radius that
I started treating most of them myself. Used cotton swabs to open the
abscess, and to keep it open, and filled it with Neosporin a couple of times
a day. If I didn't catch one right away we would go in for an antibiotic
shot and for the vet to open it up the first time.

My Frank had an abscess last summer that I tended for myself, because we
were on the island and it would have been hard to get to a vet. I talked it
over on the phone with my vet in town and she gave me instructions what to
do. Luckily, my sister was coming out there the following day, so she could
bring me the OTC antibiotic salve that my vet recommended. Frank healed
fine. I did have to cut away some fur around the holes where the abscess
erupted, but it's all grown back now. While he had the hole in his fur, I
called him my piggybank, because it was a slit on his back, just like a
piggybank. ;o) This picture shows the hole: http://tinyurl.com/339kg.

He does look like a piggy bank! If I had caught this one sooner, I think I
could have treated it myself too, and would rather have done that. He has such
thick long hair, I didn't even see it until it drained. I did clean it the best
I could and put Neosporin on it, but the next day it was smelling yukky bad,
and looked like it was filling with fluid again, and the fur had started to
come out around it.. So I figured I better not mess around with it another day.
I don't mind the hassle of hauling him to the vet, and I don't mind the
expense, really, but it's just the trauma of taking the poor little critters
that I'd rather avoid if I can.
Frankie is the one who stands on the keyboard when I'm on the newsgroup
demanding to be kissed on top of the head. Sigh. There is a big hole in my
routine with him gone.

Oops. I hope you didn't think I was blaming you for taking him to the vet. I
wasn't. :o) Was just reminded of my only experience with abscesses so far.
<knock on wood>
That smell is something else, isn't it. I didn't really have to drain it,
because Frank was very fastidious about cleaning it out himself. I think it
was some sort of instinctual reaction, he was so intent on cleaning it all
up, even from the bed covers. It crossed my mind that maybe he could develop
some sort of antibodies from the pus? After all, that's how penicillin
works, isn't it. Fight the illness with its own bacteria. Or maybe he just
wanted to hide the evidence that he was sick. Poor baby.

Bob and I once faced treating his parents' cat [then our houseguest]
for an abscess. It opened on its own, so we drained it out [and that
smell was so *awful* the poor cat nearly ended up wearing my dinner],
peroxided it, and did the Neosporin thing you described. When DMIL
took the cat to their own TED, she reported that he complimented us on
our treatment of the problem. :-)

If he's been sedated - I doubt he's yowling. I imagine he's sleeping rather
soundlessly. :c)

Poor Frank.. but if they thought they needed to put a drain in it, then
you'll be glad he stayed.. as they tend to be excessively gooey..
and more often than not, the cats stop yowling after a little bit. When I
bring mine into the clinic where I work, I have to not go back there, cause
if they see or hear me, they start complaining again, but if they can't,
they just accept that they are there and deal with it. From time to time we
have a talker, but that's all.. they are just talking away.. its not usually
howling with stress.
Best wishes to him!
