Repairmen

jmcquown - 27 May 2004 22:43 GMT For some reason, there have been a lot of repairmen around the front of my apartment this week. And Persia, rather than getting all freaked out and hiding, is acting like a guard-cat! It was, I swear, 10:00 at night when I heard someone walking through the pine needles in front of my office window. Persia immediately darted over there, checking out the noise. What is it, girl? You won't believe it - a Cable TV repairman checking out someone's connection! At 10:00 at night!
This morning, I'm sitting here typing away when suddenly I hear a jack-hammer. I look out the window; what the heck is going on? Persia rushes over to check things out. A couple of guys from an electrical company are tearing up the driveway behind my car looking for a short in some line. Persia meowed loudly at them - "Stop that racket!"
She's certainly getting more bold as she gets older. ;) Maybe next time someone knocks on the door she won't hide under the bed. Heheh

Last week she's quitely watching them work their way down the street, until they reach for our garbage, that's when all the hissing and growling starts. I guess she's seen me put it out, so she knows that's OUR garbage.
badwilson - 28 May 2004 02:56 GMT Vino loves the daily activity outside the house. He makes sure the bottled water delivery guys put my big bottle in the right spot, the mail man is carefully inspected through the kitchen window, once a month, the gardening lady is watched from every window of the house, people working on the power pole or telephone lines are fascinating, etc. And every M/W/F, he follows his maid around the house, helping (hindering actually) her with the housework. He always sleeps much longer on T/T/S mornings than the other days! He is such a goof, I've never seen him hide from anyone who comes into the house. He's always right there, trying to headbutt even perfect strangers. The only time I've noticed him be a bit scared is when this guy Rainer came in, he's 6'7" and by far the tallest person Vino's ever seen. He kept a distance of 10 feet from Rainer and looked up at him warily. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! When she sees a very tall man, she will go and throw herself down in front of his feet and roll over. The little sl*t. I had a very tall BF at one time, and she used to do this to him all the time.

Same maid, I've only ever had one. Well, we had a different one for the few months that we lived in southern Thailand (Songkhla, near where all that terrorism is happening now). But in the 2.5 years we've been here, we've had the same maid. She likes Vino, but seems a bit bemused about how much of a big deal we make over a cat. She does laugh when I chase Vino around the house though. And she is very careful to make sure he doesn't get out of the house, so that's a big plus. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. When did you live in southern Thailand? Somehow I thought you always lived in the same house.
I guess when I can't remember something properly, I just make stuff up. :)

No, maybe it was when she went on a 3 week vacation in April and I had to get the neighbour kids to look after Vino when I went away last time?

So that would have been from March 15, 2001 until October 10, 2001. Then we moved up here and have been here ever since. Thank goodness. I'm sure we wouldn't have lasted if we'd have had to stay there the whole time.

When the road repair crew was working on the road in front of our old house, I swear the masters were sitting in the living room and kitchen windows wearing little kitty hard hats and watching them. We've been taken over by the city of Fayetteville. In the next year or two (they say) they are supposed to tear up the roads and install sewer lines. The owners will be happy, I can wait for a long time.

I had lead him back to the middle bedroom that was to serve as the computer roo, then I went outside to get something. When I got back in I checked in on the installer. He has on his hands and knees pulling a cable through a hole in the wall, and (at that time baby cat) Amelia was standing on his back looking over his shoulder! I came in to take her away, but the installer insisted that he didn't mind the help.

My last few cats have been definitely "people" cats, so wormen have to be careful if they take any steps backward, for fear of stepping on the "supervisor". But why is it so MANY of the repair people I get are allergic to cats? When I moved in here, my one mover was sniffling and sneezing the whole move (obviously my furniture is all well imbued with cat hair). When it came to moving the carpeted cat tree (only waist high) he begged me to put it where I wanted it. (With tears in his eyes, yet!) (8=>)

(8=>) I did feel bad for the freezer repair guy. Definite allergy problem. Fortunately, Felix isn't into supervising such activities [in fact, what with general recent upheaval, he was more in "I'd better hide under Mom's desk or the bed" mode].

Well at least he was a nice guy and liked cats. When we were still in Vancouver and had the cable internet guy over, he admitted that the was totally afraid of cats and kept nervously looking at Vino until I locked him in the bedroom. Some people are so weird, I can't imagine anyone being afraid of fuzzy peachy Vino! -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! Last year I had a plumber at my house, and after he was finished working, we were sitting in my living room while he wrote up the bill. My cats (only two at that time) were very curious and interested in checking out the stranger. He looked askance at them and seemed very uneasy, so I asked if my cats were bothering him. He asked if I would move them away from him, so I did. Finally he admitted that he just didn't like animals. That is, he didn't like people's pets - he didn't like interacting with them. I suspect he was afraid of them, and here he was, with a job that took him into people's homes, many of whom would have dogs and/or cats, or other beasts, all ready to meet and greet the poor guy!

Yeah, it seems funny to get into a profession where you go into peoples homes to do your job when you dislike animals, or are afraid of them, or badly allergic. Just makes life so much more difficult. But then again, I know of several photocopier repair people who got the flesh eating disease from lawyers offices, so you never know, every workplace is wrought with danger! -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. Yeah, especially lawyers offices! You never know what kind of scum you might pick up there. :)
