A pride of pussycats

Hi All,

I mentioned that there are two mother cats that sort of float
between my porch and that of my neighbor.  The two are at least half
sisters and perhaps full sisters.  What's unusual about them is that
when the kittens are not around, these two will stand touching each
other side by side with their tails intertwined.  They'll walk around
like this -- I haven't seen this behavior before.

What makes the relations between the two seem like a lion pride is
that they will nurse each others kittens.  We had some on the porch
yesterday and the kits are almost old enough to be weaned.  They
should really spend another two weeks with their mamas though.

Lynda says she read that several dominant females will form
communities like this and that males are excluded except for mating
duties.  We just had one cat we called Patches just get banished.  We
had thought he was a female, but if he had been, he would have had a
litter too.  Now he'll just have to find some territory.  He's very
skittish and chances of trapping him seem slim.

Just got some little kitty pats.  Roxy is telling me it's time to
stop typing and start playing feather.  Got to go!

Regards and Purrs,
O J

Cats will foil any expectation people have of them. ;)  That old
"solitary cat" thing falls by the wayside pretty quickly for anyone
who has farm cats, or who watches a community of ferals.  They are a
family group.  I think different rules grow up in different groups of
cats.  For every story you hear about a kitten-killing tom, there is
another long-suffering "big brother" getting his tail chewed by
kittooligans.

We once had a tom who, both pre- and post- neutering, was a *great*
kitten-sitter. About all Smokey didn't do for kittens was nurse them.
Baths, hunting lessons, cuddling, etc., he happily did, whether they
were his offspring or not.

At one point when I was in grade school, we had three litters of
kittens close to the same age [don't blame ME for not having anyone
spayed! I was too young to get a vote], and the mothers pooled
kitten-care duties.
