We were struck with terrible storms tonight. Lincoln really lucked out,
though I was pretty nervous for a while, but several communities just south
a few miles have been badly hit. One town is reported GONE. Purrs and
prayers for people, kitties, livestock etc would be appreciated. This is the
worst I've seen since I've lived here almost 10 years.

Oh, NO, Karen. I had not even heard about it. I haven't watched any news all
weekend. Purrs of course for the people, and all the lost pets and others.
If you hear about any particular rescue organization heading up efforts to
reunite lost pets with owners, and rounding up the loose pets, please e-mail me
with address. We had a *lot* of folks all over the country sending donations to
us in 1999 and I'd be glad to pass that kindness along myself. It is going to
be a nightmare for them the next weeks. Even the neighborhoods where houses are
still intact, fences blow down and pets will be all over the place. In a bad
situation like yo'uve described, many people will be  living in hotels and
temporary housing and can't take their pets right away even if they are found.
There will be  a real need for help.

My goodness, is this in addition to the town that was destroyed on
Friday?

Have to say, it's certainly been the longest sustained stretch of
"exciting" weather I can remember in quite a while. Sounds like you
folks are really getting hammered tonight! Purrs to everyone!!!

It's not been nearly as bad in the Chicago area, although still
interesting. Friday had 2.25 inches of rain, hail, wind gusts 60+ mph,
tornado watches (tornadoes reported on the ground to the west of the
western suburbs), severe thunderstorms, flash floods (streets and
underpasses) and actual flooding (rivers), and a relatively rare
Seiche warning on Lake Michigan.

Major purrs for everyone affected, hoomin and critter alike... storms
like these make me glad to be living in a basement apartment.

Is this Nebraska as I suspect? I heard that there were some very very
very strong parts of the Big Storm hitting/about to hit the eastern part
of the state, around when we were having tornado warnings all over the
place... North Platte seems to have been relatively lucky as the worst of
things went around us, but they were having hurricane force winds (bad
enough for the sirens to be going off) just east of us, and I'm willing
to bet that there was a lot of damage that we won't fully see until
daylight. After the late freezes, and now this, it'll be amazing if we
have any trees left by the end of the year. :/

If this is in any way a sign of things to come this summer, it's going to
be a very interesting camp season for me with a lot of time spent in
storm shelters...

Hi Maeve! Yes, it's Nebraska. Didn't know there were other Nebraskans on
here.  They had a news conference this morning. There was a swath of damage
it seems. The gov hadn't gone there yet, but he gave a summation of stuff.
DOn' know if you saw that or not. There was one death they think. I'm not
sure how big Hallam is. Maybe 200?  300?  There is a special report at 5:30
on channel 11 I guess. Info still is sketchy at this point.

They just had a news conference with footage. The town is just completely
destroyed. It has a population of about 300. The gov is pretty convinced
that it was not quick and it was not just one tornado. I saw Lincoln Capitol
Humane Society and animal control vehicles in the footage, so I will try to
find out more later today about donations. It just makes me cry to see the
devestation. They aren't even sure the town will be rebuilt, it was that
bad:(  The high school in a nearby town was destroyed and there were ten
other homes in other towns destroyed plus crops and farmsteads. Just awful.

Well, I was wrong in my previous post, as I see from the link that the
town I was thinking of, where the twon was leveled and no one
seriously hurt, was in Iowa. Sorry to read that the Nebraska town did
have one fatality.

Seems like the storm season is bypassing us down here in Oklahoma this
year, as they're saying this is more like a summer even than spring.
Here in Lawton we're really missing all the spring storms - officially
only 0.02" rain in what is normally our wettest month with 5".

Again, sending purrs your way for all those in need, and for the
storms to end soon. Unfortunately, once we get in these weather
patterns the same area can be hit day after day.

And thank goodness for early warning, as the toll could have easily been

This year seems to be weird weather everywhere.  Even here in Thailand it's
been unusually rainy for this time of year.  And Dennis told me that it's
hardly stopped raining in Burma the whole 2 weeks he's been there.  It just
rained for 3 days straight as hard as he's ever seen rain come down and
everything is flooded, roads, fields, everything :-(

Yes indeedy, we heard about those storms, and are sending out purrs
that all can get their family and lives back together. As you say, in
one town, probably the one you mention, population about 100, every
building damaged or destroyed. Luckily, at least from what I heard,
not many injured and no deaths, so it could have been a lot worse.

I'll get all 4 of the furkids to purr up a storm for you folks. I
remember spending time laid over at my company's terminal in Lincoln
when the wind blew so hard I thought it was going to blow my semi over
on it's side. Even when I had 45000 pounds of freight in the trailer.

I hear you had a tornado touch down just on the outskirts. Here in NP, we
really got hit - .8 inch in an hour! I was in the theater for Shrek II (a
very funny, well-done movie) and didn't even know there was a storm. Came
out and saw a gigantic pond in the Mall parking lot. On the way to WalMart,
I saw several trees uprooted and some store signs down. WalMart lost power
for an hour and had blown water all the way in to the registers! When I got
home, my front door had been blown in and Chaos was sitting out on the
stoop. As I walked up, she leaped back through the screendoor (which doesn't
have any screen in it), sat inside, and *screamed* at me for letting that
horrible, noisy, big, nasty whatever-it-was happen. Took me a while to get
her feeling friendly again.

Wow! Another Nebraskite. Yeah, it was torrential here. And LOUD. I don'tknow
if we had a touchdown by Lincoln, but they are reporting 18 tornados. It's
really a miracle more people were not killed by the looks of the damage in
Hallam and the surrounding area. Lots of wind damage farther a field than
that. Terrible.

Well, I guess I'll see how the cleanup's going, as I'm headed off to wal-
mart (1).

My kitties didn't seem to notice that the storm was going on when the
wind was howling and the warnings were on and the trees were whipping
around outside... another bonus to basements. You don't hear the wind and
the hail. However, Fevs my poor scared-of-all-things-noisy furbaby went
to duck and cover as soon as it started booming outside. Both of the
brothers seem to have been affected by the storm, though, because as soon
as it passed, Wuz was up on my bed *demanding* that I pay attention to
*him*, not that silly book. He even mewed at me, which is entirely out-
of-character unless he wants food.

1 - with the only friend of mine that my scaredykitties will let near
them immediately (immediately as in without fishing them out from under
furniture), and Fevs, the scarediest of them all, will actually start
demanding head-scritchies from. Poor guy's been adopted by the furball
brothers, and now cannot escape the house without a few tons of grey fur
coating his clothing. ;) Furtunately (<typo, but I'm keeping it), this
coordinates perfectly with his own kitty's shedding. :)

Hi Karen,

I'm so glad to hear the tornadoes bypassed Lincoln, but it looks like
monstrous damage in some other areas.  I think of you and our other Nebraska
posters during these storms because I lived there for 3 years when I was in
graduate school.  I can remember times when it seemed that the sky would
literally open up and torrents of hail would come pouring down -- sometimes
with little or no warning.  A friend took me to see a telephone pole not far
from Lincoln where a piece of *straw* had literally been driven through the
pole, and we could see part of it on each side of the telephone pole.  It
sounds like an urban legend, but it actually happens -- which shows the
incredible power of a tornado.

The cats and dogs are going to the Capital Humane Society that are being
found from the Tornados yesterday. If you would have 5 or 10 dollars to send
the address is:

Hallam Disaster
Capital Humane Society
2320 Park Blvd.
Lincoln NE 68502

The woman I spoke to said that they are having a lot. They are looking for
vets that can help house some.  Some people have been able to come get their
pets because the can stay with relatives, so she was happy about that. They
had a bunch of horses reported loose, but someone in the area was able to
get them and can keep them since the society isn't set up with facilities
for them. I'm sure they will need to buy feed. If you get the weather
channel, today you can see tornado footage from inside a car!!

Well, I'm getting together clothes to donate, so I am off. I thought I'd
post just in case anyone wanted to help out.

Thanks so much.

I just heard on The Weather Channel that there were about 120
tornadoes over the weekend in the US midwest, with more expected for
today (Monday). There's also been a *lot* of rain, with much flooding
going on in these and other areas.

The Hallam, Nebraska tornado has been declared as an F-3 (mid-range)
on the Fujita scale for measuring tornadoes. It's thought that this
twister was a mile wide.
