I'm not sure the details, I'm getting them third hand from my mother who
got them from my sister who lives on the post but Ft. Irwin near Barstow
California (Army post) was on lock down today. The security had been
booted up to highest level and my sister is having to prove that she's
married to a soldier everywhere she goes. She was taking my nephew to
the pedi and before she was even allowed to enter the building, she had
to go through MPs. (I'm assuming that's not standard, you can at least
walk in the door like normal before you show your ID). Sis said they're
inspecting everything that comes on post *very* thoroughly and
apparently it took a bit of an act of congress before they allowed her
into the children's clinic. She had to prove she was married to a
soldier stationed there. But Mom told me that part, maybe mom is
overexagerating because all that she needs to do there is show her
military id isn't it? Or was it more, I have no idea. But nonetheless
it's tighter than a frog's a** right now.

The word is that they received a threat. At this time, it's rumor and as
always it's the worst kind but my sister also admitted details were very
sketchy. But can we have purrs for the place? It's very likely that they
could have been targetted because that is the place where they have
desert warfare training for troops before they're shipped overseas.

It's really unsettling and I'll be so glad when she and Chris are home.
She's coming home in a month, and if this isn't a false alarm or a prank
by some disgruntled soldier, then it can't be too soon for us.  Chris
has to stay until August but they've begun his outprocessing last week
*woohoo*.

We have to go thru much tighter security now to go on base than ever in the
past.   They even search the cars at random.  And even then when you know
everyone on the base has been checked out or wouldn't be there, there is
more security than ever around the buildings.  Unnecessary roads have been
permanently closed off.  You cannot part a vehicle within quite a distance
of any building.  Concrete barriers between roads and buildings, etc.

And still these beautiful young men and women go about their work and their
training with smiles on their faces and their heads held high.  It is an
honor and a privilege to spend time around them.

During WWII there was a saying:  "A slip of the lip

I really don't think I've had a slip of the lip here. Its post wide and
there's a hell of a lot of families stationed there. They've tightened
security this week, moreso than typical. What's secret about that?

Furthermore, suspected threatening has been going on for a while. We go from
yellow to orange and it doesn't even phase people anymore.

A) I can't imagine how speculating about "heightened security" would be
of any help to a potential "enemy" - other than discouraging them from
attack, which IMO would be a GOOD thing, wouldn't it?

B)  Too much of Bush's America seems to advocate secrecy for secrecy's
sake, the rationale appearing to be that what the people don't know, he
won't have to make excuses for, later on.  I agree, the young people in
today's armed forces are (most of them) praiseworthy.  However, I
deplore their being sent to die under false pretenses, mainly for the
enrichment of Bush's big business cronies.  (We've had corrupt
adminstrations before - hopefully we'll survive this one, too - but I'll
be a lot more sanguine about there even BEING a 2008 presidential
election, if we manage to vote someone else into the White House in
2004.)

Hi Grace,
This would make anyone nervous.  We will send purrs and prayers for your
sister and her husband, and special good wishes to your nephew that he
recovers quickly from whatever reason your sister was taking him to the
doctor.

Sending purrs that this is either a hoax or part of some training
exercise. I'm right outside Ft Sill, home of the Army's Field
Artillery where lots of training goes on, and

****Well, shoot, a fluffy tuxedo kitty just decided to hop up on my
lap and somehow sent the message half sent. She obviously knows some
keyboard shortcut that I haven't discovered, since I have no idea how
she did it. LOL

Anyway, what I was going to say was that I haven't seen any increased
security here.

****OK, Little Bit, you can send it off now.... Guess she doesn't want
to show me she did it, so I'll have to do it the old fashioned way

LOL, scritches to Bit first and foremost.

I have no idea if it was specific to the post or the entire area. Jody, DH,
said it could be some idiot that just didn't want to go out into the field
this weekend, hot date etc. Sounds par for the course, I remember in high
school they'd call in a bomb threat and such to get out of tests. Back then
though, we were just sent outside while they searched for anything that
looked out of place. Ten minutes maybe?

Mom didn't have any further news today which probably is a good thing. I
hadn't thought about a training exercise. Hmmm, I'll have to call sis and
ask her. They could have responded (to questions) that the additional
security is in response to the event of a perceivable threat and she took
assumptions from there. I wouldn't think so, she seems pretty familiar with
what goes on and what's normal. *shrug*

All we know is

A) security locked the post down
B)  the word "terrorist" was part of the conversation between my mother and
sister.

Anything else is unconfirmed and even those two "facts" could be off.

Grace, it could be something as simple as some one lost an M-16, a
training exercise, or some idiot called in a terrorist threat (though
they nab them pretty quickly).  Ft Bragg is at normal security levels,
and if anything major were going on, Bragg is usually one of the first
posts called in.

FWIW, we've seen security called out and gates closed etc. because a
couple of soldiers took another soldier's rifle and tossed it into the
woods and the unit couldn't find it right away.  All vehicles going on
or off post were searched, all gates were closed, access was tight, and
so forth.  I wouldn't worry about it.
