Weeble's Mama

Magic Mood Jeep? - 17 May 2004 21:00 GMT
Most of you know that Weeble's real mama abandoned him and one of his
sisters last August, when he was only a day old.  The story that I haven't
told here was that I waited about a month, and then set humane trap out for
his mama & remaining 3 siblings.  Mama got caught in the trap ONCE, and went
berserk big time when I approached the trap (my goal was to trap her, keep
her on front porch while I trapped Weeble's three siblings, let her finish
raising the kittens, adopt them out & have Mama spayed & then release her
back into the wild), she managed to escape the trap when I was about 2 feet
away.  She never approached the trap again, although I did reset it & all 3
off Weeble's siblings entered it and were on the trip-plate, it didn't go
off.  We did manage to catch 3 raccoons (or the same raccoon 3 times, since
we just released it (and to me one raccoon looks like every other raccoon) -
and it waited patiently while we opened the trap) and one opossum (and this
one didn't want to leave the trap, I had to pick up the trap & shake it to
get it out!).

I would occasionally see Mama & the Trio (what I called them) crossing the
back yard, or in the hedgerow that separates our property from the
surrounding.  And then she & the trio disappeared.  I have never seen the
trio since them, and have no idea what happened to them.

Mama made an appearance again this spring, and, in the same place she had
Weeble & his sibling, she had a litter of 4 kittens.  I left food out for
her and she continued to accept it and she & the kittens remained there for
about a week.  Then one morning, about 2 weeks ago, they were gone.  I
didn't see hide nor hair of Mama at all, until today.  I was riding along on
the mower, and all of a sudden there was an explosion of black & white cat
darting from under a pine/fir tree (I can never tell pine from fir - it has
the big soft needles), and I look, and there among some dead branches is an
overturned 5 gallon bucket, and dating into the bucket is a kitten!  I shut
down the mower, and went to investigate while Mama high-tailed it away
somewhere.  There are 4 kittens, one tuxedo-like except that the parts that
would be black are grey tiger, one white with even less grey tiger & a brown
spot on it's nose, one white with a few brown/grey tiger blotches & a few
orange splotches, and one white with a few brown/grey tiger spots.  Fearing
that since I startled Mama away that she will abandon them (like she did
Weeble), I gathered them into my (oversized) T-shirt and found a box (full
of yet-to-be-used Foster & Smith goodies) and a scrap of rug & put them on
the front porch., ran to the pet store & got some KMR & some new nipples for
the bottle I used on Weeble last year, the grocery store for some unscented
plain cheap tissues with which to wipe kitten bottoms with until they are
litter trained, and thinking ahead I got some jars of baby food just in
case.

The kittens eyes are open and VERY blue, they have their baby teeth, but
they aren't 'walking' yet, still kinda crawling a bit, almost walking.
Right now they are VERY scared, though they did pee when stimulated, they
wouldn't eat (their bellies are kinda big, so I'm thinking Mama had just fed
them)

They are all females, and I have tentatively named them Eenie (the white
with brown/grey tiger spots) Meanie (the white with brown/grey tiger &
orange spots - and it seems to fit her as she hisses at me a lot), Minie (or
maybe Minnie - as in Mouse?) for the white & grey tiger, and Moe for the one
with brown spot on her nose.  Thankfully I didn't see any fleas on them, but
I'm not going to hold my breath.

I'm keeping them on the front porch so to keep Fat Basta-, er.... Tennessee
from thinking they are food and eating them.

OMG, a bunch of Weeblings!
Keeping my fingers crossed for you and all of them, and hoping you can
nab that Mama cat and do the right thing for her.

In the meantime-- pictures of the tiny tots, maybe?

Gorsh.  I hope you can either re-unite them with Mama and get them all
spayed, or be able to raise them by hand, and catch Mama.  Good luck and
please post piccies and keep us informed.  The cats offer purrs for the
kits' well being.

I'm not gonna hold my breath that we can even catch Mama - and even if we
do, I'm doubtful if she will accept her brood back.

Well, if you're in southern Indiana, you're welcome to one - once they're

They are so precious and look clean and healthy.  It looks like Mama cat has
been doing a good job.  I hope you can catch her before the next litter.
You are so kind to take care of the babies.

Wow, I thought they were going to be younger! They look about 4 or 5
weeks old to me. They've reached that really adorable stage where their
ears have become pointy, and their faces have stopped looking like
little rats and started looking like little cats. :)

I'll bet they can start on solid food pretty soon. They are VERY CUTE!!

I hope that someday you can catch the mother cat. A friend of mine has a
feral group in her yard (that she feeds regularly) and she has never been
able to catch the matriarch, who has litter after litter. She (my friend)
does catch some of the kittens, and some have become part of her household.
But catching the mother has been a quixotic enterprise thus far...

Those are some seriously cute kittens.  You might want to watch out for
Minnie, though, she has a serious resemblance to a certain bad cat who
haunts my computer from time to time.

For those of you that are interested, I never did finish mowing as by the
time I got back from the stores it was raining, and now there is a full
blown thunder storm going on.  I got soaked just putting the mower back in
the garage!

oh no. I hope you catch the mama cat soon and have her spayed so she stops
having kitties. Not that kitties are bad but I'm sure she would be a much
happier, healthier cat not having these babies every year. Poor cat. What
are you going to do with the babies if mama doesn't come back?

I've contacted a local pet-rescue, they will post them on Petfinder when I
say that they are old enough to 'leave home'.

I really don't hold much with capturing Mama, she's very feral, the closest
I ever got to her was the 2 feet right before she slammed her way out of the
trap last fall.  I do want to TNR her, as I don't think that she'll take the
kittens back now.

The Fearsome Foursome have already gotten used to us, come running towards
us whenever we go out on the (enclosed) front porch.  I do have a heating
pad on low under the box, and they have eaten a mush of canned kitten food &
KMR - they won't suckle from a bottle but they will LICK the milk from a
nipple if I hold the bottle out & squeeze it - but that gets very tiring.
I have set up a litterbox for them, but so far they've just wandered through
it - I'm going to have to teach them (I was lucky with Weeble, he taught
himself - just started peeing in a corner of his nest-box, so I gave him a
litterbox and he went to town & scattered litter all over trying to dig to
China.... he still does that too, thank goodness for deep hooded
litterboxes).

Hehehe.  That didn't take long!  The kittens are so adoooorable!  I
feel sorry for the mother though, who must be wondering about her four
precious babies.  It'll probably also mean she'll go back into heat
much sooner.  It's too bad she's so trap wary.

LOL. A neighbor here put out a trap trying to catch a possum, and
caught Rocky instead. Rocky learned, won't go near a trap now. The
possum was never caught.

You should put food out *at the same time each evening* where the mother
can find it for a day or two, then set a trap and put the kittens in a
carrier butted up to the back of it. Mama may very well try to get to
her kittens and spring the trap. If it doesn't work the first time it
wouldn't hurt to repeat the process each night for awhile and see what
happens. You can tie the trap's door up and start feeding Mama in front
of it, then gradually move the food each night a little farther into the
trap until she's eating it inside and then just untie the door and
you'll get the cat. Make sure to cover the trap right away once she is
in it so she'll calm down. I would definitely use a different trap than
whatever you used last time because she shouldn't have been able to
escape AT ALL once the door was down. A Havahart racoon size trap is
inexpensive and will work just fine. It may take awhile to catch her,
but she needs to be spayed and sometimes you just have to be patient and
take however long it takes, even if it's a month.

Aww, poor babies. Is there any TNR group operating near you? Maybe someone
would know how to trap a cat who has grown wary of the kind of trap you used
before. I hope Mama can be neutered, or you might end up fostering ever more
kittens. ;o) These are so cute, thank you for taking care of them.
