Friday evening i get home in a daze after working a month of overtime.
I just want to sit in my chair and let my body recover. So here comes
Djoser from the enclosed porch making a throaty call...cause his mouth
is full. My poor body produces one more burst of adrenaline as i jump
to head him off as he makes his way to the bedroom. Ok, the bedroom
door is safely closed as i try to herd the mouse-catching panther back
to the porch.
Oh, no! Now he detours to hide behind my desk chair with two desks and
the fridge for a mouse to hide under. I am desperate to get Djoser out
of there before he drops the mouse to start "playing". Then Robin
arrives and somehow, underneath the swivel chair, an exchange takes
place. Suddenly Robin runs out with the mouse.
He heads for the closed bedroom door. Why do they always want to go
there? He hunkers down with his back to the door as Meowmie and
various cats eyeball his stolen prize...a prize that is wiggling. I
sternly bid him not to let it get away. He lets it get away.
There is a bookcase in the hall it runs under. Robin runs back and
forth to see that it doesn't get away. The far end of the bookcase has
a couple buckets of cat litter right beside the open storage closet.
The closet is full of storage stuff; packed to the gills with it. But
room enough for a mouse to slip in. It slips in.
I am weak and dizzy with exhaustion. I am mad at Robin. I am fearful
of what the mouse may burrow into. I groan and start pulling things
out of the closet. Some of the things in the closet haven't been seen
for years. Finally, I pull out a half of a truck inner tube.?? The
mouse was hiding in it. Robin grabs it and i grab him and toss him
with his prize into the bathroom and slam the door.
Then I start putting things back in the closet. After i am done, I
peek into the bathroom to see what Robin is doing. The mouse is still
alive, sort of. I had a bright idea. I toss Sheba in there. She is
serious about food. It won't escape her. She goes for it and Robin
slaps her before she can grab it. I slam the door, reasoning that
Robin will eventually start to play and then Sheba can catch and
dispatch the poor thing.
I give them plenty of time. Then I peek again and it is all over. Now
i can finally collapse and get some rest. We got to bed. I can only
feel three cats on the bed with me. Who is missing? In the middle of
the night I wake up and hear Djoser give a throaty call. The other
cats are immediately awake and bounce off the bed. I wimper, "not
again". I roll over and cover my head. The four cats took care of the
problem before morning wakeup.

It was funny... the next day, as these things usually are.

At least kibble doesn't wiggle. ;-) I am on a few days vacation right
now so i am trying to catch up on my rest. But that ain't easy with
four cats demanding attention.

When any of my guys catch a mouse, as soon as I hear the muffled "murp,
mrup" (hey you all! I have a mouse!) I grab my old tennis ball tube and
attempt to make them spit it out into the tube. It usually (!) works. But,
if the mouse does get away from the cat who caught it, chances are the next
cat that catches it won't be as gentle!
Patti and the Bridgeport crew!
