I was reading in my room a few minutes ago.  It was late and except for
the sound of the dishwasher , the house was quiet. Suddenly, this
adorable tiny white face appeared under the edge of my book.

It was The Lady Jazz, of course.  I held her and talked to her and
kissed her (a LOT!), and thought to myself how awesome and amazing is
this bond we share with the Furpeople.
How sterile our lives would be, without their love and dependence on us
--  and our devotion to them!

Just think about it  --  no hairballs in the entryway, no throw-up on
the stairs, no one missing the edge of the potty box, no valued dishes
crashing from the table or pretty paws sneaking into our plates.  But
also no tiny kisses or head bonks, no warm bodies curled up on our laps,
no heartbroken voices wailing "Where have you BEEN?" when we come
through the door, no sweet bodies to hold when we need them most or that
most endearing of all sounds, the soft purr.

I am an ol' lady now.  I can write letters (big deal!), but  can no
longer lead the parades.  I have reached the conclusion that all I can
do is to take very good care of these sweet beings entrusted to my care,
and leave it to you young, strong ones to fight for a better world.
Nevertheless, my heart aches when I think of hurt or hungry or lonely
babies who just need to be held and loved.

Heavenly Father gave us animal friends to live with and to love.   Where
did we go so wrong?

Someplace in this house is a small body that just needs to be held, and
a small head that needs to be nestled.   I'm on my way!

Hugs,

How appropriate for Weeble to curl up in my lap for loving & purring, just
as I was reading this post!  He doesn't do that very often any more, usually
wants me to play with him by 'chasing' him to the tower, and donning the
'wrestling glove; so he can have a go at 'killing' it with his ferocious
attacks. But even now he's purring and he even let me get the sleepies out
of the corners of his eyes!  Anything as long as I'm paying attention to him
& not typing.

Gorgeous post.

Thanks Renee. Even though I am mostly otherwise occupied with Cary these
days, if Shmogg didn't sleep on my pillow at night, I'd miss him terribly.
Ditto with tripping over him, or breaking up his fights with Fluffy, or
Fluffy drooling on my legs when we eat.....

They are such an intergral part of our lives that I fear that I take them
for granted like they'll always be there. And yet I know that they will not,
and sometimes I worry that I can't tell them in ways that they'll understand
just how much I love and treasure them, even if I"m not paying so much
attention to them now as I used to.

This thread reminds me of something a friend of mine said the other day.
She has four dogs and two cats, and was having some sort of work done at
her house.  She said the workman said he wouldn't charge her if she gave
him one of her dogs!  She managed to refrain from killing him, and wrote
him a check for the work.  ;-)

My mother usually takes care of my cats when I have to go away for more than
two days, and every time I go to fetch them home, she asks me to leave one
(Nikki). Well, I've discovered that my Mum is Nikki's real person, but I
can't bear to let her go, or to break up her and Frank.

Wow. That's a difficult one. I don't know that I could make that
decision. Although if my sister & her kids want Harley back, it will be
very difficult to let him leave.

But maybe Frank needs a change -- a kitten to liven his life?

My Mom had a problem with her dog like that.  It decided early on that my
husband was its real human.  Even before we lived with them for a few weeks.
The dog was depressed for a week when we moved away.  Then Charlie went back
and lived with my parents for several months a few years later.  The dog was
thrilled until he left again.  It hurt my Mom's feelings that her dog was in
its room with one of his dirty socks crying.

My Aunt and cousin had a similar problem.  They solved it by dropping the
dog off at my Aunt's every morning on their way to work and picking her back
up in the evening.  Worked for them.

Lovely post.

Polaris is snoozing between keyboard & monitor, all tuckered out from
doing the gardening with me this afternoon. I read the post, and then
petted her and gave her a pillow (stuffed camel) so she could snooze
more comfy.
