Cathi - 14 May 2004 18:04 GMT ... But anyone else is welcome to chime in, as long as they play nice ;-)
Anyone watching Eurovision this weekend? And does anyone have any particular favourites as yet?

One has to have one's priorities. ;-)

Exocat - 14 May 2004 19:11 GMT I thought I'd rather watch my boys have an evening frolic.
BTW for consistency, shouldn't that be Burovision? :-)

| ... But anyone else is welcome to chime in, as long as they play nice | ;-) [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] | Cathi | (an unashamed Eurovision fanatic) I will most likely catch at least some of it. It is quite big in Sweden, the whole thing I mean. There's been the preliminary rounds to get a Swedish winner, a Nordic thing with people representing Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden discussing all the entries, some tv programs on old songs/competitions, some extra stuff celebrating the fact that it's 30 years this year since ABBA won with Waterloo and so on ... oh, and there was the semi-finals a couple of nights ago qualifying the last 10 to go to the final together with the 14 that went straight there - I didn't see much of that but caught the little video thing about ABBA that was broadcast from Istanbul .... You see - I'm not really crazy about the thing and still it's not possible to avoid it here ...
I hear Sweden is expected to do well in Istanbul tonight too ... The guy who wrote the song is one of our most reliable pop composers and a well known artist himself and the singer is also a very experienced artist in this genre.
I have heard some of some the entries but can't say I have a favourite, the Ukraine one kind of stuck in my mind though both visually and musically, not sure it that's a good thing though .. and the Greek guy showing of his stomach together with girls in glamorous bikinis ... Cyprus' ballad could be something if she manage to hit the notes ...
I understand that this year it wil be all phone votes, no juries anywhere and of course if you can't catch it on tv it will broadcast on the web, for example here: http://www.eurovision.tv/english/event.htm
So Cathi, since you're a fanatic - which one's your favourite and will be getting your vote

Cathi - 15 May 2004 14:33 GMT >So Cathi, since you're a fanatic - which one's your favourite and will be >getting your vote So far I've only seen the semi-finals - liked the Maltese entry, and the Ukrainian one. I did want Estonia to get through, only for the opportunity to see their insane percussionist perform again!
I have a bit of a soft spot for the Cypriot entry - she's from the Medway area in Kent, just up the M2 motorway from me!
As for the UK entry - it's a pleasant enough song, but I don't think it's a winner. However, given a decent performance, I think James Fox will do OK on the night, and not present a repeat of last year's infamous "nul points". There certainly seem to be a lot of male vocalists this year, including several with a Ricky Martin/Latin feel - a nice contrast to the standard poppy entries, and the more ethnic feel of, say, the Ukrainian one. That reminds me a lot of last year's Turkish winner, which I rather liked.
After all's said and done, it's just a harmless evening's fun, and I'm very much looking forward to it all!

Ukraine - Ruslana with her leather and whips!
Turkey - I was quite into ska music when I was younger. This is a welcome change from all the ballady stuff
Sweden - good, solid, Eurovision fare.
Now let's see how far off I am ...

dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 15 May 2004 21:53 GMT I haven't been watching the entire thing - as I'm flitting about doing loads of washing as tomorrow I'm out on a charity bike ride. Caught Ukraine's effort - Xena Warrior Princess - much howling and dancing - if it was a stoneage dance competition, they'd be on to a winner :-)
Cheers, helen s

| Ukraine - Ruslana with her leather and whips! | [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] | Now let's see how far off I am ... | -- I'm with you on the ska-thing, that and the German soul-what-ever-thingie are the types of music I would actually listen to.
A lot of the performances are entertaining enough I think, of course there are a few exceptions ... and then there's always some song that get very popular that you just don't get ... it's certainly much more fun and more surprises with the "newer" countries ...
Oh, Sweden got it's first 12 pointer - from Denmark, that's perhaps just a little more surprising that Cyprus gave Greece their 12 ... =o)

like I said this is the one song that stuck with me when I just heard a bit of it so I guess it will stay spinning - or stompin' - round and round in my poor worked out head ... well cats got some late supper so I'd better be off to bed and get some sleep to get some writing (work) done tomorrow again ...
oops - just caught this on the BBC news website: "Ruslana's winning song mixed folk music with a troupe of leather-clad female dancers." Obviously whoever wrote that never saw the performance, even if all five dancers had very long hair two of them were certainly male ...

Yoj - 16 May 2004 00:42 GMT Okay, I just have to ask. Several times here, and only here, I've seen the term "Buropeans". I know it refers to European, or at least I assume it does, but why the "B" and what is its significance?

Hence Burope.
