Thanks so much for all the help.

I talked to my vet who said to take the kitten back to its mother.  The woman
came and got her and will have her vet check it out.  She will keep the baby
for another 2-3 weeks.

My male cat already misses her.  He thought this was the nicest thing to ever
happen to him and spent most of the kitten's waking hours bathing her and
playing with her.

Thanks again.

So glad to hear the kitten is back with its Mama. Will you take her back
when she is a bit older? I'm sure your other cat would be just as happy to
see her then.

She is definitely coming home here when she is a little older.  Poor Buddy
wandered around listlessly tonight...didn't even want to play with his toys.
He finally settled down and slept in my lap as usual while I watched TV.  The
kitten (Crystal) was only here for three days but Buddy fell in love with her.
He bathed her constantly and played with her.  He was amazingly gentle.

My Frank was like that when I brought home my Nikki as an eight-week-old
kitten (she would have been pts if I hadn't taken her). At first he was a
little bemused at this suicidal muffin that came bouncing towards him all
poofed out, but then Nikki discovered a teat on him and sucked away happily,
and he groomed her, and since then they have been the best of friends. For
over 15 years now.

Isn't that funny how sometimes kittens will nurse on tomcats and then the
old boys turn into substitute catmamas to the little ones?

When I was a kid, our cat-hating daschund adopted a kitten the same
way, maybe because he didn't realise it would grow into the
neigborhood alpha tom. They became lifelong friends, though Bo (the
d*g) didn't really appreciate Mittens (cat) grooming him in later
years he put up with it. In fact, Bo was very protective of HIS cat
with the other d*gs in the neighborhood.

Just woke up from a rare mid-day nap. Luna joined us first, then Issa.
Fez tried to cuddle with Luna, but she nipped him, so he went to lie
with Issa. Fez immediately started doing the "kneading bisquits" on
Issa, while trying to suckle. That went on for a couple of minutes, then
Issa moved over and did the same to Fez. :) Those two still love to
suckle on whoever will let them, and they both used to suckle on Luna
when they were kittens. Fez still does and she lets him get away with it
most of the time.
By the time we woke up Rufous had joined the pile-o-kitties, but Luna
had left. Basho came in late, and he would only lie next to his brother
Issa. Sigh. I wish I could do this every day.

He sounds like a wonderful cat! I'm sure they'll have a happy reunion
in a few weeks when she comes back.

Sammy, Little Bit, Rocky and I all want to welcome you to the group
(RL got in the way and I was off line for a few days, so am just now
catching up.) I didn't catch your first message until you had already
made the decision to let Crystal go back and stay with her mom a while
longer (the right decision IMHO).

Your story reminded me of when I was faced with finding homes for
Little Bit's babies. At the time I didn't realise I needed any cats,
she was just a pregnant stray I let in out of an ice storm who was
supposed to stay overnight. Anyway, when she had her kittens a couple
nights after moving in. I checked with a local pet store who agreed to
take the kittens, but didn't want anything to do with LB. Thing was
that they wanted the kittens at 6 weeks, which seemed awfully young to
me even though I really didn't know anything (this was before I
started reading newsgroups). I asked a cat crazy friend, and was told
in no uncertain terms that the store figured they could sell cute
younger kittens faster, rather than waiting a couple weeks to give
them more time with their mom, which was best for the babies.

To make a long story shorter, I decided to hang on to the kits a
couple weeks longer. Gave me more time to find homes for them instead
of dumping them at the pet store. Which, of course gave them enough
time to finish wrapping me around their little paws. When all was said
and done, I ended up keeping LB and Sammy, one of the babies, and
joined the ranks of cat crazies myself.

And the rest is history! :) Glad you had a kinder heart, and much more
sense, than the folks at the pet store.

Ah, good.  I'm sure the two cats will be good companions when she returns in
a few weeks, and the little kitten will be much better off by having that
additional time with her mother.

Welcome to the group, Norma.  I agree with those who have said that you
did the right thing by taking her back to mama for a few weeks.  While
you will miss the little one, that time with mama will do your kitten a
world of good.  Not only that, but when you get her back, she'll be very
playful and capable of holding her own with your older tom.

I'm so glad to hear kitten is back with her mother. I'm sure your male cat
will not miss her too much and anyway she will be with him again in a couple
of weeks.
Best wishes,

What a sweetie. (your grown cat).  It's so lovely when they take to a
little one like that.

Great news that your baby will have a few more weeks with her
cat-mama, to grow strong and healthy.  When she comes back, your
boycat will have a great playmate.
