Hey everyone,

Thank you so much for all your kind offers to donate for this kitty.
I stopped by the house today and spoke with the old lady who lives
there.  This is the roommate of the guy I met yesterday.  She told me
how the cat follows her roommate around and how she sleeps with him.
She told me that Grayness was fine and was at the vet.  She's schedule
to have surgery on Monday to fix her dislocated hip.  They are
monitoring her because she was coughing or something, so the vet wants
to make sure there's no secondary infection before they put her under
anesthesia.

And while she's talking I'm racking up the prices in my head. (IV
fluids, pain and anti-inflammatory medication, day care; all for
today, friday, Sat, Sun and Mon.  Geez, the surgery alone is going to
be expensive.)

Then I told her how I posted the story on this newsgroup and that
people were willing to help out with the vet bill.  She was like,
"Really, oh my goodness that would be so nice of them."

I don't know how I can coordinate this, but I'm not going to post her
address on here for obvious reasons.  I can list the veterinary clinic
that is taking care of the cat.

Mid-Valley Veterinary Clinic
17280 Saticoy St.
Van Nuys, CA 91406
(818) 705-4585

The owner's name is Michael Martinez and the cat's name is Grayness.
I guess you could send money to the clinic, but it probably would be
better to send it to the owner so the clinic isn't hit with a barrage
of mail.

If you want to send the money to the owner directly, drop me an email
and I'll give you his personal address.   krysfamulan@yahoo.com

The lady said I was a Godsend and it was fate that I was there at that
time.

This is quite amazing for me, actually.  It's been a very long time
since I was showered with compliments, and I can't tell you what's
it's done for my self-esteem.  I've never been called a Godsend
before.  :)

Thank you all so much,

Kristi

Usually in these cases someone just warns the vet that people may be calling
in to donate and they comply pretty happily. Thanks for posting. I know I
will be contacting them. I can't do a lot, but every little will help.

After rehashing the story of Juls in rpch+b recently, and some other fund
raising endevors, it seems that a total is needed before donations begin.
You don't want to end up with an overage. That wouldn't be fair, nor
would the vet know what to do with it.

Last time it was coordinated with the vet so we could call the vet office
directly and put it on credit cards against the bill.  I thought that
worked well.  I'm sure the owners are nice people but sending them money
that may or may not get paid to the vet would be uncomfortable for me. I
am sure all of us at one time or another have spent money dedicated for
one thing on something else.

Some of the nice people here helped me get a stray some help at my vet.
They mostly called the vet and donated funds via their credit card tho
one sent a check to the vets office. It helped "crackles" out so much,
I ended up only having to pay a small amount after the wonderful
donations and the vet discounting the bill a bit. I was so thankful
since I had no money to help this poor neighborhood stray, crackles was
in such bad shape. The donation system worked smoothly and crackles is
healthy now, still hangs around and never misses a meal.

I wish I could help this time but my vet fund I try to keep in my
account is depleted as another stray was in a bad way and I took her to
the vet 3 times over the last 2 weeks trying to find out what was wrong,
sadly she didn't make it, she stopped breathing when I rushed her back
to the vets when she started gasping. She was such a sweetie, why do
people leave behind such nice pets.

Yes, were I in a position (sorry, I'm not) to send $, I would rather send it
directly to the vet specifically for Grayness.  Chances are, if the vet were
overpaid, they would either (a) refund the monies or (b) ask if we would
mind if it be used charitably towards something like a humane shelter or
some other animal who needs help.

I don't like to doubt people, I really don't.  But as you said, funds given
to one cause are often used for "something else".  Not that I'm saying the
70-something woman is a crack addict, but you know what I mean!  LOL

I know that a couple of years ago when a bunch of us here helped a
friend of mine with her new cat that had suddenly come down with a heart
condition, there was  an overage that she just let sit there as she
needed it.  The cat needed future tests for heart damage and the like
and since she was on a limited income, she wouldn't have been able to
afford them.  So the overage just insured that her cat would continue to
get the high level of care he would need while she built up reserves for
the future care.

For all who remember him, Beethoven is still doing well.

Glad to read about Beethoven, Bridget.

Basically, what happened with the overage with the vet funds you all
sent to help out with my emergency, was that they were put on an account
to help with future bills for Miss Pretty Penny.  They have covered her
visits and I've added to them when I can.  I've also donated some to
help another stray that needed vet help.

Kristi,
Thank you for the update.  Personally, I prefer to send a donation to the
vet, not to the individual.  I want to be sure it is used for the cat.
Also, I hope that you make sure that the owner understands that the
donations may not cover all her expenses and she will be responsible for
whatever remains. We are helping a person and cat in need. We are not
sending her a blank check.  Also, she still owes you $200, or whatever you
agree upon.
You don't need to coordinate it.  Just let the vet know to expect some
donations for Grayness and those who are able and want to participate will
take care of the rest. I doubt that the vet will object to getting some
extra mail that contains money to make sure a bill is paid.
Cheers,
Annie

I just called the vet office and they seemed very confused.  They asked if
the owner knows that people will be calling in/sending money to help with
Grayness.

She suggested either credit cards because they are instant, or sending the
check to Grayness' Dad made out to the Vet Clinic if you are wary of sending
money directly to the owner.  She also said that Grayness is scheduled for
surgery on Monday..

Maybe this should be clarified a bit more with Michael?

I agree that the vet should be called and a donation made via credit
card or something like that.

I informed Dolores, the 76 year old roommate that there were people
willing to help, but I haven't talked to Michael himself yet.

I'll probably talk to him tomorrow.  We were playing phone tag today
and I couldn't get back in touch with him.  It's midnight here in Van
Nuys, so it wouldn't be nice to call now.  :)

If Michael approves of the idea,(which he probably will) I'll tell him
to call the vet office and let them know ASAP.  Then perhaps on Monday
at the earliest we can start calling in or something.

This is all speculation, so I'll find out more when I talk to Michael
tomorrow.

Just wanted to say that what you did, stepping in and getting Grayness
away from the d*gs, transporting him to TED, putting down the deposit
to get the needed treatment started, and now following his progress
and helping out arranging possible donations is AWESOME.

I just rang the clinic and it seems my "foreign" credit cards don't work ( I
tried both my Visa and my Mastercard). Other nationalities might have better
luck, but be warned that you may be making an overseas phonecall that comes
to nought.

I'll *try* to send a check but my memory is crap, and my ability to get to
the post office is rather limited at the moment. Dont' suppose they take
PayPal do they???

No I don't think so, but if you don't end up sending anything, that's
okay.  Your sending of purrs and good wishes in my opinion is just as
good.

I was just on the phone with the clinic and it seems like Swedish credit
cards are not as foreign as Australian ones ...

I talked to "Jennifer" who was very sweet and helpful and let me know that
surgery was very successful and Gray was doing great. The owner was there at
the time. Jennifer said she would try to access the NG so we might hear from
her.
Thea & Bono sends more purrs for Grayness' recovery.

Hey everyone,

Well, you will all be glad to hear that I got my money back.  I went
over to the house today and spoke to both of them, and the elderly
lady wrote me a check, which I deposited right away.

Micheal told me that when he first moved into the house in 1990, the
gray cat and the brown/black cat were kittens and chose them.  He
never really cared much for the cats.  To him they just were friendly
shadows that he shared the house with.  He told me that he's realizing
now how much these cats mean to him, and how's he's going to do
everything he can to make sure this cat gets better.  She 14 and a
cranky old lady, and even swipes at his roommate.  But with him around
she acknowledges his presence with respect, and curls up on his bed
when he's asleep.  Turtle, the brown/black cat is now sleeping in the
basket that Grayness likes to occupy.  She misses the other cat, even
though Michael tells me they fight over everything.  :)

I also told him about everyone here at rpca that wants to help.  He
called the veterinary clinic and told the doctor that people would be
calling in with donations.  So it's all set if you would like to
donate for this kitty.  Here's the clinic:

> Mid-Valley Veterinary Clinic
> (818) 705-4585

He also gave me his email address, sterlingcowboy3@aol.com, and would
like the people that donate to drop him a note, so he and Dolores, his
roommate, can sent thank you notes.

I also told him how to access this NG, so he might be posting soon.

So all we can do now is wait until monday, and see how Grayness, or
Gray as Michael likes to call her, fares after her hip surgery.

Thanks to everyone that has sent good wishes.

Cheers,

Kristi

No point in calling today at this hour or tomorrow since I would guess
they would be closed. I'll call Monday. Glad you got your money back.

Same here. It's funny how sometimes you just don't realize what a presence
an animal has in your life until it isn't there.

Thanks for the update, Kristi. Glad to hear you got the money back, and that
Michael has been converted into a cat person without noticing. ;o) We are
still purring for Gray to recover.

Thanks for keeping us updated on Grayness. Glad to hear that Michael
and his roomate reimbursed you and are planning to carry through with
the needed surgery and treatment.

On a side note, don't know if you're a member of the Yahoo Catslaves
group, but this incident is also a topic of discussion over there,
lots of the same folks as here. Let me take this opportunity to pass
along all the purrs coming from there as well as those here.
