What would you do to save a cat? (short)

My adventure this evening is really long, so I'm going to post a short
and long version of it.

Basically, I was following two Rottweilers, thinking they were strays.
I pull up to this house in time to see one of them shaking a gray
cat.  I jumped out and started hitting the dogs with my hand,
screaming "STOP!! LEAVE HIM ALONE!"  The dogs backed off, but the cat
was really tramautized.  There was no blood, but the back legs were at
funny angles.

I scooped up the cat and took her to an emergeny clinic.  I had to put
down $200 of my own money to start treatment on her.   I did manage to
contact the owner and he's now going to try to take care of the cat
and he promised to pay me back.

I just got off the phone with the clinic and the cat has suffered a
dislocated hip and a broken rib or two.  But the cat is stable and
doing well at this point.

It was quite an adventure.  I fended off two Rottweilers and they
didn't turn on me.  I picked up an injured cat that didn't try to
shred me.  *sheesh* what an evening.

I'm leaving out a lot of details, so if you would like, read the long
version of this tale.

Well, bless your heart for what you did. But you are *very lucky* the Rotts
didn't turn on you and you didn't get hurt. I am so glad it turned out so well.
Lucky, lucky kitty.

I read both versions and have to commend you for saving the poor kitty.
Well done.   The story breaks my heart what with the owner and his roommate
short of cash and all.  I offer purrs to kitty that the vet will help her
out.  I'll bet you're shaking now that its all over!

That is quite a story and you were really brave. Two Rottweilers are
pretty intimidating. You should keep us posted on the cat and the bill.

Well done!

The dogs probably didn't attack you, as you were behaving the *right*
way dogwise - you weren't afraid (at the moment), you behaved in a
determined manner, you pushed them from their "prey" and in all manner
of speaking behaved like a leader of the pack. You may have been afraid
afterwards, when you stopped to think of what you did, but right then
and there, you were probably just thinking about the cat, so the dogs
didn't sense anything on your being afraid.

The cat, on the other hand, might have clawed you in pure self defence,
if he would have thought you were with the dogs. But apparently he
noticed that you were getting the dogs away from him. And his injuries
may also have been such, that he wasn't able to do much to you.

Exactly what I was thinking: what she described doing was very much
alpha behavior in dog-ese.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I think the dogs were more surprised
at what I was doing.  I remember when I picked up the cat, one of the
dogs looked at me as if I was holding his favorite toy.

Once I handed off the cat to the people at the clinic and finally got
a chance to sit down, I start thinking, "Dude, I wasn't even thinking
about what the Rotts would do."  I didn't start shaking, but the
adrenaline flow was like, "Wow, I just did WHAT?"

I'll definitely keep everyone posted on the cat

Oh my god.  You're the definition of a hero!  Dogs can sometimes be
dangerous when they're worked up like that!  I hope you and the cat
are okay!!

Kristi,

Wow!  Thank you.  I know so many nice rotties but sometimes when that
prey drive kicks in it can be a tragedy.  Glad you were there to help.
If you don't get paid back let us know.  I am sure several of us would
like to help.  If you do get paid back but the vet bill is a big issue I
am sure something can be arranged so we can make some donations.
