OK, I can't resist posting this joke, which I just received today.
It fits in with a recent discussion. Some of you won't like it, and
some, I'm sure, will love it. YMMV!

Joyce

----------------------------------------
A woman bought a very expensive fancy car, full of bells and
whistles. Just before she drove it off the lot, the sales guy showed
her how to use the radio.

"It's easy," he explained. "You just tell it what you want to listen
to, and it finds you a station automatically." To demonstrate, he
said "blues" to the radio, and it quickly started playing Robert
Johnson.

Impressed, the woman drove the car off the lot and tried different
styles. "Classical," she said, and heard Bach. "Folk" - and Joan Baez
filled the car. "Rock," and the radio started playing U2.

Just then a car came careening through an intersection and nearly hit
her. "*ssh*le!" she yelled out the window...

"Good morning!" the radio chirped, "Welcome to the Rush Limbaugh
show!"

about since we were on the subject...:

I'd sub "Howard Stern" here, especially since Rush Limbaugh gets at
least partial credit for my meeting and marrying Bob.

Or was this just more "let's slam the conservatives, since that's OK,
but heaven help them if they return it, I'll lead a group flameout"???

I'll agree with putting Howard Stern in that joke, too. :) Can we
throw in Dan Savage as well? And Dr. Laura? Also, that wacko, Ann Coulter.

I've never started a flamewar on this newsgroup!

I do reserve the right to slam conservative politicians and public
personalities, though.

Hey, what's wrong with Dan Savage? He's hilarious! Have you read his
book Slouching towards Gomorrah? You must read it!

Me too. Particularly those who incite hatred towards me.

Victor, your post had me puzzled for a moment. First time through I read
that book title as "Slouching Toward Gonorrhea," then rather belatedly
realized that couldn't be right, could it? :-)

Good Lord. That sounds like it could be the title of those horrid "health
films" they used to make us watch in high school.

Heh, no Sherry, that film was "Reefer Madness", remember? But Hopitus is
finally, admittedly, *confused* - as I zip through the tv channel changer's
itinerary, sometimes I see that Howard Stern dude and stop in my tracks: he
always has some near-naked bimbo doing very naughty things onscreen w/ or
w/o assistants or other "guests" while Stern eggs her on w/lewd comments.
What has what I've observed to do w/politics? I never see anyone saying
anything about party affiliations or the election! Or have I just missed
Stern's political connections because I snort briefly and resume
channel-surfing?
He's been kicked off our local radio, I read, but I can't see where it's for
anything but a general media (tv) "put-on" (fake) indignation and censoring
of risque stuff due to that bimbo who flashed her boob nationwide. Tv
bigwigs don't really want to clean things up, they are just following up
w/what they *think* the public wants. Now *that's* "knee-jerk".....but I
still can't connect it to politics.

Oh, nothing. But the joke had the woman yelling "*ssh*le" in her car,
causing the fancy radio to play <fill in your most hated announcer here>.
The original joke said Rush, Seanette wanted to change it to Stern,
which I couldn't argue with. I'm not even sure what his political
affiliations are, I just think he's a jerk.

BTW, Victor, re: Dan Savage - let me get back to you. I might have him
confused with someone else...

My ever-so-humble and uninformed opinion is that Howard Stern rode the shock
radio wave, period. I never really paid any attention NOR do I even remember
any of his political affiliations. I'm no fan of Rush Limbaugh either. Big
deal. I"m learning to roll with the flow though, and it takes a whole lot to
offend me these days. Does that come naturally with age? There was a post here
referring to Baptists once, and I thought about getting offended for about half
a second, then I snorted and said, "Oh, hell, she's right."

He used to be a jock here in DC before he was syndicated and he was a riot.
I never paid attention to his political affiliations, either, but he sure
had 'em. I have an MP3 from his radio show the morning of 9/11/2001 and
some of the things he was saying was dead-on before it ever came out in
mainstream news. Oh, and I remember him playing "a.s Man" (character with
his a.s cheeks cut out of leather pants). What a not-so-attractive a.s to
have hanging out, too. bleh.

In this case it actually is politics. These people (Ashcroft, Powell
(Colin's son), etc.) want to shove their morals down our throats. That's
just not right. If you fing a TV or radio program offensive, don't watch
it. That's what I do. I'm happy. The people who like these shows are
happy. Everybody wins!

On the contrary, Seanette; the liberals are the ones who acknowledge
the right of free speech.  You're entitled to your opinion.  Post it.

Krista, you really opened a potential can of worms here.  You are
implying that conservatives do not allow free speech.  Is that your intent?

As a screwed up conservative, I could take offense at this remark, but I
won't because I don't believe that political discussions really change
much.  Those who are set in their ways aren't going to budge, and those
who get swayed by one side can be as easily swayed by eloquence by the
other.

Basically, lets agree to disagree politically and get down to the real
debate:  Which is better, a calm gentle cat, or a rowdy bad cat?

I have both and they each have their points.  The rowdy ones make life
interesting and make great story fodder, but I'd rather have Merlin,
Huey, and QC share my bed any time rather than Pine Cone, Squeakers, and
Honor.  The three "bad" cats tend to have control issues, bed demands,
and restless leg movements and weird mouth noises in their sleep.

A good, well-reasoned post, Pam!  I've shared my home with both types of
cats too.  I'm still getting mileage out of "Arky stories", even though
he's long gone to the RB, but it is much nicer to share a bed with
Skeeter and Lindy.

In a stereotypical context, "liberals" *love* the 1st ammendment but
distrust the 2nd, while "conservatives" do the opposite. :)
However, you must admit that traditionally, the more conservative
members of the courts are the ones that limit free speech. Take for
example the always divisive issue of flag burning. For a "liberal" it's
protected speech, while for a "conservative" it's an insult to the
country. Guess which members of Congress push for a constitutional
ammendment to prevent flag burning?

What's a calm gentle cat? Never heard of those... ;-)

Funny, in Australia the Liberal Party *are* the conservatives!

Australia's two major political parties are the Liberals and Labour,
with a swag of minor parties like the Greens, the Democrats (which are
*nothing like* the American Democrats), One Nation, etc.

In Australia, at least, the two major parties are virtually
indistinguishable in the way they run the country, despite both having
quite different founding philosophies.  As far as I can tell, the same
might be said for the USA - regardless of who is in government, the
main issues of poverty, medical care, education and employment are
unchanged and who's to say whether the situation in Iraq would have
been any different had the other guy been president. [donning
flame-proof suit]

All this talk about American political fevor kind-of amuses me, but
since I don't understand the details of your constitution and have
very little idea which amendment is which, this discussion is largely
meaningless to me.

Re: the cats.  We have a calm cat (Ted), but she is not gentle - quite
the opposite.  We also have two rowdy cats (Spock and Persephone) and,
unless you're a bed mouse, they are both gentle.  We love them all,
but S & P are *much* more fun to play with than Ted (who simply sinks
her claws in and stops the game before it has a chance to begin!).

(snippage here and there)

> Krista, you really opened a potential can of worms here.

I know, I know - I'm sorry; I had just been reading over and over
about how a conservative *isn't allowed* to post an opinion, when of
course they're allowed.  My computer's been acting up so I was
catching up on several days' posts, and this theme was repeated too
often for me to be able to ignore it.

Which is better, a calm gentle cat, or a rowdy bad cat?

> Pam S.

My rowdy bad cat Mike has been replaced by a calm, gentle lapcat who
has me worried sick.  I want my little monster back.  Bad cats rule.
