Jim and I want to thank you for all the support during his back surgery.
Special thanks to JoJo for sending the updates and for the most interesting
Pittsburgh tour on Saturday. And the weather was perfect, too.
Jim & I arrived home late last night.
The bottom line is that once again the power of purr has prevailed.  After
hobbling around for about 19 months, Jim is standing straight with no pains
shooting down his legs. He does have some pain at the operation site, but,
that is to be expected, and will go away when he heals.
It has been a stressful time for us, and we can't tell you how much we
appreciate your support.
Rosie and Cinder put out some purrs last night, and we dedicated them to
anyone who needs them.
For anyone interested, I'll post a more detailed account of our trip
shortly.
Thanks again,
Annie & Jim, and Cinder and Rosie, who had a good time with the cat sitter,
but are happy to have the regular slaves back home

Welcome back!  It's good to hear that Jim's surgery went as well as we
heard.

Thank you.  We are thrilled with the preliminary improvement.  We'll know
the final results in about 6 weeks when his surgery has healed.

Annie, glad to hear everything went well. Glad you met some good friends to
help make your visit not so hard. Glad to hear the furbabies are fine. God
bless.

Thank you, Irulan.  Considering that the purpose of the trip was back
surgery for DH, it turned out to be a really good and mostly enjoyable
experience. I'm showing Jim the posts and he is amazed that so many people
were offering support.

I assume from what you posted that your DH had some sort of laminectomy
performed; whatever it was, congrats on its success and best wishes for his
continued recovery and eventual more normal ambulatory abilities.

The diagnosis was spinal stenosis at L4/L5.
Over the 18 or 19 months it took to come to the surgery, the only procedure
offered was a decompressive laminectomy. This was the opinion of several
doctors, including orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons.
Jim and I did not believe that the answer was a laminectomy. That meant part
of his vertebra  would be removed and the prognosis was a hospital stay of
several days and a prolonged recuperation with a not too low possibility of
destabilization of his spine and lifelong pain and drugs.
I did some research on the Internet and found this doctor in Pittsburgh who
had a minimally invasive procedure that preserves the integrity of the
spine, offers faster healing and fewer complications. It is called
endoscopic decompression via microforaminotomy.  You can see the information
at http://www.drjho.com/id33.htm.
We can't speak highly enough of Dr. Jho and what he did for Jim. Jim was up
and walking shortly after the surgery and only had one night in the
hospital. Dr. Jho did three patients that morning.  That afternoon he came
by to check up on them and brought the other two, also walking, into Jim's
room to say hello.
It was great.
Thank you for your good wishes.

Annie,

Glad to hear you are back home safe and sound!  Wanted to drop you an email,
but figured you had a lot of them to go through, so one more wasn't needed.

Continuing purrs to Jim, so happy furbabies are doing well.  I will email
you later, just wanted to check to see if you made it home ok.  On my way
out the door.

Hugs and Purrs

Yep, home safe and sound and slogging our way through email, snail mail and
newspapers. Rosie has decided that after a week of dry food, she does not
want to eat canned food. Of course I have a couple of cases of the expensive
stuff stocked up on the shelf. I'd rather it go into the cat than sit out
and then down the garbage disposal.
Cinder hasn't missed a beat and is back to her usual routine.
Can you believe that the airline lost our daughter's luggage again on her
return home? And her bf didn't ask how she got the Harley Davidson shirt, so
she hasn't told him. (hee, hee)

Thank you, Steve.  There is improvement, indeed.  We'll know the actual
extent when the surgery site has healed.

Thank you.  Jim is doing better every day.  Last night he walked up the
block to visit with the neighbors.  This morning he found enough energy to
clean the kitchen. The rest of the time he's sleeping. His incision is
healing nicely. We are deliriously happy.

That's great news Annie that Jim's operation was such a success.  We are
happy dancing over here for you :-)
I am surprised that Jim's leg pains are already gone.  While Dennis felt
much better immediately after the operation, he continued to have the pain
down the back of his leg (but to a much lesser degree) for a couple of
months.  The doctor said that the nerve heals a millimetre a day and that's
about how long it took to go away.  The pain kept going less and less far
down his leg until it eventually went away.

Jim is able to walk normally without pain in his leg. The doctor said he may
get twinges now and then as the nerve adjusts, but that should be over in
about 6 weeks. Meanwhile, it will be a reminder if he starts to overdo
things. He will have another MRI in about 6 weeks so the doctor can check
his progress.
Soon he will be able to do his own happy dancing.

Excellent!  I bet you guys are thinking why didn't we do this sooner.  But I
guess you didn't find the right doctor until fairly recently.  Congrats :-)

We contacted the doctor roughly a year ago.  He is so busy that we had to
wait until this April to go there for the surgery.  But it certainly was
worth the wait.
