On a more serious note: Has she ever done this before? If not, it would be good idea to have her checked for possible UTI. Also, cats will frequently pee on mats with that non-slip "rubbery" backing that is often used for bath mats. There is apparently a scent that attracts them.

A perfectly folded blue triangle. I walked in there this morning and just guffawed! She's such a dainty cat.

When I went on my trip the end of March/early April, the vet discovered she had (another - the first was last December) UTI. She's on special food and went through two courses of Clavamox drops. I'm due to take her back in 10 days when I will board her for another trip to see my long lost love :)
Also, cats

She seems to like the bath mat - I've caught her starting to squat when I've been sitting on the toilet! It's almost like "well hey, *you* go in here, why can't I?" LOL
This is the same cat - well, the only cat I've ever had - for which I had to purchase one of those cat fountains. She kept sticking her head under the faucet when I was brushing my teeth. Again, you do it, why can't I?

I think it would be a good idea to take Persia to a vet immediately and not wait the 10 days when she will be boarded. She has a history of UTI, and inappropriate urination is often one of the first signs. It can be easily treated when caught early but can be deadly if treatment is delayed. It is even more important in this case because you will be on vacation. I realize that she will be boarded with your vet, but you have had years to observe Persia's normal behavior; so you can be in the best position to recognize signs that something may be wrong.

The vet sold me another bottle of Clavamox which I am giving her in the meantime. And my new/old :D guy is paying for boarding her and any medical treatment she will need, too. Hell, he said "bring her along"; I would if I didn't think she'd cry her danged head off for 75 miles, not to mention possibly run out the hotel room door first opportunity.

I honestly think she's peed on the bath mat simply because she sees me using that room as a litter box. I have another bathroom and her litterbox is right in the hall outside of that one - when I use that one, she decides it's time to use the litterbox too!
Trust me when I say I love this cat more than anything and will not allow her health to be endangered no matter what my circumstances. Where there is a will there is a way :)

Yoda pees on rugs & towels left on the bathroom floor. He's done it his whole life. We went the UTI-checking route many times, he never had one. He just likes to pee on soft things. But only things in the bathroom floor, thank goodness. Sherry
Mishi - 03 May 2004 04:19 GMT Hi Jill,
Have you considered giving Persia cranberry capsules to help with her UTI? I have one cat, Widu, that is absolutely crazy for them. Every morning she begs me for one, and it is sooooo hard to resist that little face! <G> She likes the capsules better than the pills, and when I accidently get the pills she still comes running, but gives me a look of disgust when I offer her one. I guess I am not a proper slave!

We'll go back to the vet next week; I'm sure he'll have some suggestions and will also take good care of her while I'm gone for 6 days.

Oh, gosh Jean. That would be sensible thing to have done. But me?? Noooooo. I turn into the original kitty enabler. I start folding a clean town *next to* the litterbox, out of fear that if he doesn't have a towel to wee-wee on, he'll graduate to carpet. Fast forward *TEN YEARS*. I am *still* giving that cat a clean towel to pee on. We have "Yoda's wee-wee towels'' in a separate drawer, and I toss it in the washer every day.

Hopitus2 - 04 May 2004 08:12 GMT ROFL, Sherry.....if I do recall, Yoda is now an eldercat and because of his golden years, deserves his very own "wee wee towel" as a token of respect.

My old roommates cat could never get her attention (she basically lived at her boyfriends apartment) and so one night at 3am I awoke to Stan peeing on my comforter with me in the bed.
Sort of, "I NEED HELP NOW".
I called her first thing in the morning and told her that if she didn't spend the money on her cat and NOW that he'd be dying a slow painful death. (She was somewhat of a procrastinator.) Also told her that cleaning a down conforter would cost $30. :-D

And honestly, I'm not sure I've ever seen one that didn't have rubber backing on it. Oh well, into the washer it goes... then the dryer. Then she'll want to lay on it because it's nice and warm (like sunshine!) :D

It's not as luxurious as the fluffy rubber-backed mats, but it eliminates that "cat attractant" possibility. It is heavy enough that I have never had any problem with slippage, despite the lack of backing.

It is heavy enough that I have never had any > problem with slippage, despite the lack of backing. That's what I use. Once I'm dried off and dressed, the towel-like bath mats go back on the shower's towel rack. I don't keep anything on the floor anymore - my bath mats have been peed on (or used to cover poops if I haven't cleaned the litterbox recently enough) too many times.
By the way, Jill - you might want to let that bath mat hang dry, rather than putting it in the dryer. Or if you do, use low heat. High heat can melt the rubber!

I've never liked the rubber-backed ones because they don't stand up to washing every few days, which is what I like to do. I didn't know cats like to pee on them, though. We have a rubber-backed rug/doormat type thing that we put on the swing for Mike to keep his feet from slipping through the slats, but he doesn't seem to have any particular *feelings* for it.

It isn't something that becomes a problem with every cat. However, the problem *is* so common that it's always something to watch for.

Hopitus2 - 04 May 2004 21:26 GMT It's my personal opinion through experience that one can never completely get the smell, however faint, out of those rubber-backed bath mats, so the cats, with their superior sense of smell, return to the scene of the crime for this reason.

Honestly, she'll just keep peeing on it if you keep using it. BTDT with a kitty when I was growing up. We went to towel bath matts with no backing and the peeing stopped.

I have help sorting the laundry, and then once it's done everything has to be inspected by Little Bit. Then Sammy jumps into the cupboard and naps on the clean towels.
