I know this is SO off topic but I watched the Kentucky Derby and oh man
Smarty Jones is a legend now. I don't know if anyone else follows the game
but this was indeed memorable by any standard. Can Smarty be an honorary
cat?

It was a great race.  I was praying none of the horses would slip on

Me too, but it was fine after all. I'm still just over the hills about it.
This is a case of truth is BETTER than fiction!!! When I saw him win the
Rebel, I thought, oh my. But still I couldn't believe that it would turn out
THIS GOOD! A blue collar PA bred horse with an exciting history, filled with
all kinds of karma including comebacks from a serious injury and the tragic
domestic violent murder of his first trainer (who hand picked both his sire
and dam) and he shares the birthday of his new trainers mother. Oooo. It was
just a great day. He is just like the little engine that could.

Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal
claiming to belong to the same species as Shakespeare it is simply disgraceful.

I won't tell if you won't.

BTW, Stinky is also an honorary Boston Terrier. ;)

LOL; I assume Smarty Jones is a horse and not his jockey. I am always glad
they finish big bucks races like that without breaking any of their skinny
little legs (that goes for both men and beasts). Not much into equines
anyway, I prefer the fat hairy ones with big legs and feet that pull beer
wagons; for some reason they look healthier and calmer, if not faster and
prettier. But kowabunga, congrats to Smarty Jones; may he live long and
prosper.

The famous Budweiser clydesdales.

I like those and the belgiums, which are a bit smaller but not by much
:)

Have you heard the song "The Last Trip Home", written by Davy Steele
and performed by the Scottish musical group called the Battlefield
Band (http://www.battlefieldband.co.uk)?  It is a bittersweet song
about a plowman, or rather ploughman, taking his team of Clydesdales
home from their last job; from this point on, a tractor will be used
instead.

How sad!

Good song....and sad. But no tractors replacing them @ Budweiser. What a
dull sight that would be, right? Tractors pulling the beer trucks.

I missed it but I understand my cousin's troop never made it to the race. I
vote for Smarty to be an honorary cat and I hope to read why.  :)

LOL.  Racing in the UK is a three year old called One Cool Cat :^)  He
was well-backed for yesterday's 2000 Guineas but sadly, didn't finish
in the first three .

I used to be able to follow all the prep races (before kiddos) and have
always loved the Triple Crown races.  I only got to see the race and not see
all the pre-race info but it does sound like Smarty Jones is an amazing
horse.
Here's hoping we might have the Triple Crown winner!

Do you remember Charismatic? (or maybe Charisma) My spelling may be off
but he was the horse oh, three years ago that won both the Derby and the
Belmont but when he ran the third, he fractured his leg. (or is the
Belmont the third one, I don't remember) He was a strong favored to be a
triple crown. I surely hope Smarty wins it though. He sounds fantastic.

yeah, Charismatic. Chris Antley (RB) jumped off and held the leg until they
could get him off. Some credit him with saving the horses life by keeping
the fracture from being irrepairable. One thing about Smarty, he seems
(knock on wood) extremely hardy. Even when he smashed his face in thirty
ways from Sunday he didn't even miss a meal. He was reportedly eating like a
horse last night and playing with his hay net. I hope he stays HEALTHY!!

Rats!!!  This was the *only* Derby race I've missed watching in
decades, and I go back a long way.  Had another appointment and by the
time I got home they were taking the official photos.  Smarty was the
only horse I had in mind as a winner and it sounds like he did it in
great style.  Wish I'd seen it!!!  As an aside, though there have been
great horses and great races, Secretariat is still my all-time
favorite, despite the likes of Seattle Slew, etc.  Top horse in *my*
book - I can still get chills and tears when I think of Big Red
romping down the Belmont Stakes track 31 lengths ahead!!!!

That must have been something! Wish I had seen it.

There is probably a replay of the race on the net somewhere. Do you have
highspeed internet or dial up?
