New UR Food Doesn't Agree w/Persia

Okay, she loves the Purina One UR and either eats it too fast, which causes
her to barf, or she eats it normally and something *in* it causes her to
barf.  So we're back to the original equation of what do I give her to eat
that she can eat for her UTI condition, not barf and not lose weight?  Guess
a call to the vet is in order again. (sigh)

Try putting some balls or stones in the dish that she must eat around. IT
will slow her down and then, if she stops barfing you know it is just to
fast. You could also try smaller amounts. If she likes it enough, she may be
overeating.

Also, did you switch her to the new food gradually?  Sometimes a new food
change can cause tummy upsets.  I also think Karen has a point with eating
too fast or too much.  Our Oreo tends to eat too fast and then throws up.
Sending purrs for Persia,

Hi Jill,

Does the food contain beet pulp?  While many foods cause allergy
symptoms that occur as skin/ coat issues animals that are allergic to
beet pulp will often vomit and or have loose bowel movements.
If your vet does change her food you may want to consider one that
doesn't use beet pulp as a source of fiber if that could be an issue for
poor Persia.

No beet pulp... it was hard to read the ingredients on the bag as Persia was
meowing and rubbing herself up against it the entire time.  But no, nothing
about beets.

How is Persia with the regular Purina Urinary Tract formula (not
Purina One - they have a UR formula under their regular Purina label)?
Tribble (RB) and Natasha ate that for years because Trib had had a
couple bouts of "blocked cat syndrome" when he was little.

She hates it.  That's why I was so happy she seemed to like this stuff.

One of the multitude of reasons I feed my cats Science Diet is UTI's.

(Other reasons include keeping dander down and because DANG, they are so
soft and beautiful on the "Good Stuff")

Obviously your cats will EAT Science Diet.  None of those I've had would
even touch the stuff - just sniff it from a safe distance, turn up their
noses and walk away.  (They'd actually go hungry for days, and still
refuse to eat it!)

My vet gave me a sample packet of SD once. The cats chowed it down like they
loved it. I then bought the full-sized bag and they wouldn't touch the stuff.
Go figure. I always wondered if they "doctored" the sample bag to make it more
palatable. I'm sure that's not true, but it makes you wonder.  Bootsie not only
refuses food she doesn't like, but she sniffs it, then takes off running like
her tail is on fire. It's kinda cute.

And how often do you find the food they LOVE on sale, only to have them
decide they don't like it, after all, when you've stocked up on large
quantities at the reduced price?  (I swear they can read the price
tags!)

yeah, my two as well.

Or more accurately - Dakota chowed down, Apache sniffed,
turned up her nose and walked away.  Dakota noted that
she wasn't eating and decided that if it wasn't good enough
for her, it wasn't good enough for him, stopped eating, barfed
up what he had eaten, and pretended to starve for the next
two days till I got something different.

OTOH, Felix refuses to eat anything else. :-)

He won't even tolerate a gradual switch from one variety to another.
Once the mix gets to be too low on Light Maintenance for his imperial
tastes, he goes on a hunger strike.

The words "hunger strike" are unknown to the Evil 3.

Ours will eat Hill's Science Diet, but not the light stuff.  When I fed
it exclusively, they all lost a ton of weight, except Pine Cone.  Then I
tried blending the two together for a while and all of the cats, except
Pine Cone, would eat the regular and spit out the light stuff.  In the
interest of sanity, we're back on the regular for all of them.  We're
supplementing Penny's diet with baby food, as she's lost way too much
weight.  Poor kit.

When I got the Stripey Thing (George) a couple of years ago, I switched
to SD kitten food until he was an adult.  Sounds fine except Tony
wouldn't let me switch back.  If I put down anything besides SD kitten
food, he goes on a hunger strike and gets downright mean.  Some cats are
mean catnip junkies, Tony is a shithead when he gets hungry.  There is
NO peace.  Feed him and he is the sweetest thing in the world.  Guess
who made sure he and the Stripey Thing got to keep the kitten food?  I
couldn't stand it anymore.  Neither are gaining weight on it and their
coats look great, so I guess I'll live with this for now.

Welcome back Bridget.  Long time no see.  How are you and your father
doing and how are Tony and George?  How's your father's cat?  Hope that
we get to see more of you posting.

Pam S. glad that Tony won on the kitten food, as he's a kitten at heart
