What a neat story! Pfc. Hammer is definitely a hero. Kudos to ACA and
others for getting him over here and I'm glad he has a new safe home. :)
He's a cutie!
Speaking of the troops, my cousin has been at sea on the USS Louisville,
and was deployed for OIF last year, and he is one of 6 chosen to present
the rose award (or whatever it is) in the winners circle this Saturday at
the Kentucky Derby. Assuming his ship comes in in time; they're on their
way in now.

Here's a link to last year when they did this:

If it's the same thing, it sounds like your cousin will be presenting
that gorgeous rose garland (500 red roses!) to the winner!
Lots of neat Derby info:

Thank you, I've bookmarked that site to check for this years article. :)

It does! I don't usually watch that race but I will be this year to look
out for him. It's been horrible knowing he's been a part of the war and
worrying, but he is a true patriot and would be doing nothing less. He's
right around the same age as my son was; born maybe a year earlier.

Oh man! I am so excited to see the derby this year. Cool! You'll have to let
us know if he makes it. What's his name? Sometimes they introduce the guys
who do that.

His name is Michael Palmeiri. I probably won't know until the Derby if he
made it or not.

This is a wonderful story. Pfc Hammer is a large cat and very
different looking to other cats. But then the egyptian Mau is closer
to the ancient lineage than other cats.

Not knowing anything about cat breeds, I had never even heard of the
Egyptian Mau. All my cats have always been mixed breeds. Cool looking
cats, though, aren't they? I googled the breed and read a couple
interesting articles.

I didn't know anything about cat breeds either. I went to some cat shows
because my daughter was showing her cat, and although I don't really get into
purebreds much, it was interesting to see the breeds that I'd seen in books
only. Devon Rex, Scottish Fold, Bengals and such. CFA has a cat show in Lawton
every year. I'll ask my daughter when it is.

I wouldn't have known what an Egyptian Mau was, either, if I hadn't read
Gabriel Knight's The Wild Road. The Queen of all cats is an Egyptian Mau in
that book.

Great story. If you click on the link to Military Mascots down at the
bottom of the artilce you go to stories about several other soldier
pets - mostly d*gs, but a couple cats.
