Update on Yertle - long

It's been a while since I updated you on Yertle the kitten my dog bit.  He
has adjusted beautifully, and is dealing with his handicaps with typical
kitty attitude - what handicaps? :)  I am also 99% positive he is deaf on
top of his other disabilites, this not due to the dog, I suspected for a
while now.  So not only is the little guy deaf, he's blind on one eye and
his jaw is now crooked and sometimes it makes his tongue stick out (which I
think is cute).

Anyway, possible adoptee came by to look at them a few weeks ago, wanted a
kitten to get as playmate for her dog (he gets along well w/her roomie's
cat, but they are moving out).  She was leaning towards Yertle, had to make
sure landlord was ok first, which she is OK with.  She came back with her
roomie last nite to look at them again.  Torn between Max, who is such a
little cuddler (he passed out on her lap) and Yertle.  She was afraid how
Yertle would deal with dogs since his little accident.

Well I forgot to put the baby gate up at the bottom of the steps so the dogs
come barrelling upstairs, we've got company they want to see who it is.  The
door to my room is blocked off by ex pen.  Angel, is beside herself, she
really wants to get in to say hello to the company, so she's standing in the
door barking and whining.  Yertle is on the roomie's lap looking at Angel
(which is the one that bit him) - he gets up and goes over to the door and
starts pawing at Angel - absolutely no fear at all - that sealed the deal,
Yertle has a home!  He's an adventerous little guy, but when he wears out he
wants held.  He will scream at you for attention or food.  You can't help
but love him.

So despite his handicaps this girl is still in love with him.  I tried to
convince her to take Max too :)  After all, with Yertle being deaf and
partially blind, he needs himself an interpreter! :)  She's not sure her
landlord will approve.  I'm not worried about Max getting a home, he such a
little lover and throws himself on the nearest warm body - how can anyone
say no to him?

I think dad is relieved Yertle is getting a home too - he said to me last
nite that he's got a thing for "screwed up cats" (of which I already have
2), so I think he was thinking about letting Yertle stay if the girl didn't
want him.  (he's so white and soft, just like my late Tyrone, definite soft
spot there).

Oh, and the girl is going to keep his name!  In a few weeks Yertle will have
a permanent home!  I am so relieved.  Sam's going to be difficult - not a
people cat, very timid, does like to be petted but hates being held.

At lunch I am off to pick up two more kittens, about 4 weeks or so.  One has
an overbite and can't suckle (ok so how did it get this old if it can't
suckle?).  Gonna see if mama Adele will be willing to nurse.  Kitten season
is here!

Thanks for all your purrs and prayers for Yertle!

Wonderful news about the little kitty, Yertle. I hope his deafness and other
handicaps are not big things in his life. Looks like he has coped. I love
happy endings like this.

That's wonderful that Yertle has a loving home!  It's also wonderful
that there are caring people like you, who do so much for cats in need.

Looks like our purrs and meatloaf meditations for Yertle's future have been
answered.

Isn't it great how well some animals adapt to their "handicaps".  Many
years ago my great Aunt rescued a little kitten. My aunt and uncle had
a rental house at the back of their property, and the tenant
accidently crushed the kitten's leg moving the washing machine trying
to get the kitten out from under it. The tenant was going to put the
little kitten down, but Aunt Minnie convinced him to let her have it.
The kitten ended up losing its leg, so he was named Tripod.
Eventually, Tripod did have to be put down, but not for over twenty
years.
