Oh, my aching back...

Mark Edwards - 27 Apr 2004 19:16 GMT This morning I woke up with lower back pain, to the point that I could barely walk. I called in sick.
First thing I did was to soak in a tub of hot water, to relax the back muscles.
So I'm lying down in the tub, luxuriating in the hot water. Little Feet is sitting on the edge of the tub, very concerned that I would submerge myself in water.
He watches for a minute or two, then carefully puts a front paw on my chest, while he tries to stay on the edge of the tub. Then he reaches out the other front paw, and places it on my chest. Finally, tail held up above the water, he gingerly works his back paws over until he is sitting completely on my chest.
I now have a sweet nurse kitty, braving the very waters of hell to meatloaf and purr on my chest, while I soak. I have dry hands, so I pet him and take care to balance him, so that we don't end up dancing a ballet for tooth and claw.
Finally, the water cools, so I lift Little Feet out, dry off, and fill a hot water bottle.
I lay on the bed, with the hot water bottle on my back, and Little Feet immediately climbs up, onto the hot water bottle. I guess he has the best of both worlds - hot water, sealed in an impermeable container, and being able to nurse me back to health all at once.
Of course, you're not supposed to apply heat for too long, so I remove the hot water bottle after half an hour. Little Feet then decides he can nurse me from a couple of feet away, as he takes up the meatloaf position from the relocated hot water bottle.
We both take naps, and all is right with the world.
Hugs and Purrs, Mark

Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal claiming to belong to the same species as Shakespeare it is simply disgraceful. (Aldous Huxley)
David Yehudah - 27 Apr 2004 22:41 GMT Hi, Mark Run, don't walk, to the nearest feed/pet store and buy yourself a bottle of DMSO. Eight or nine bucks will get you a lifetime supply. Use a Q-tip to put a very small amount along your lower spine or where it hurts. Let it dry before putting your clothes back on; anything it touches that is soluble will go right into your blood stream. You will almost immediately taste copper. Don't worry; that's normal. Repeat once daily as needed. It is slow-acting, usually taking two to three days to get relief. It's also good for arthritis, rheumatism, muscle aches, just about anything. It freezes solid at 65 degrees F. Cheers, Dave

Sam Nash - 28 Apr 2004 04:29 GMT From a WebMD link: DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is a colorless, slightly oily liquid that is primarily used as an industrial solvent. The use of DMSO for therapeutic applications is controversial, but some evidence indicates that DMSO has anti-inflammatory properties and alleviates pain when applied to the skin. These effects have been reported particularly with connective tissue diseases (such as scleroderma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis) and muscle injuries. DMSO appears to reduce pain by inhibiting transmission of pain messages by nerves and may also soften the abnormal connective tissue associated with disorders.
Hope this answers your question, Jean. Sam

Hopitus2 - 28 Apr 2004 06:46 GMT I am no way being funny here when I ask you: are you talking "horse liniment"? Long ago, I had a friend whose solution to back strain/muscle pain was liberal application of this vet liquid, which I have no idea what the medical name would be. All I can remember is that it worked for me @ the time, was clear yellowish in color, and smelled to high heaven.

Sam Nash - 29 Apr 2004 04:30 GMT In the US, many stores with farm animal (cows, horses, etc.) supplies should have it. Don't take my post as a recommendation - never tried it myself. But others have (see Dave Y's post) and swear by it. Sam

David Yehudah - 28 Apr 2004 14:58 GMT Hi, Jean DMSO is the acronym for dimethyl sulphoxide, an industrial solvent. I used to see people parked on the side of the road selling it out of their cars as a cure for arthritis. The AMA threw a fit, basically because it was costing them customers. . .um, patients. Millions of people still use it. It works great on horses, too.
Some folks here may remember that up until about 4 or 5 years ago, I was wheelchair bound with a crushed disk in my back. Because of my heart condition, surgery was not an option. Today the only time I dig out the chair is for extended walking trips, such as shopping at Wal-Mart. And recently when I blew both knees out prospecting in the Mojave Desert, it had me back on my feet in just a few days. Cheers, Dave

Victor Martinez - 27 Apr 2004 23:57 GMT What a good kitty! A very good stretch for lower back pain (got it originally from the chiropractor) is as follows: lie on your back with both feet extended and arms stretched forming a T bend right knee and grab it with left hand twist knee towards floor on the left, look towards your right hand hold for half a minute or so, don't pull hard with your hand, let gravity do the work repeat on other side
Do this every day and your lower back will thank you!
