New UR Food

Persia has been suffering from urinary problems lately, so I got some new UR
(urinary tract) food for her.  I opened the bag of this new stuff tonight
and she went NUTS.  Gimme, gimme, I want it, now!  Sheesh, you'd have
thought I was offering her a can of salmon!  Crunch, crunch, chomp... (she
apparently really likes it.)

It's Purina One UR formula, in case anyone needs to know.

Thanks for the information.  I'll keep it in case Skeeter gets tired of
the KD.

Carbon copy here.  Vet sold me a bag of it and said give it to both cats.
Had my doubts they'd like it, but gave it a try.  Both loved it.  Then they
liked it.  Then they tolerated it.  Then they ignored it.  Now they hate it.
All this over 5 or 6 weeks.

Hope it goes better for you.

By the way Jill, did they ever do a urinalysis on Persia?  If so, how did
they get the sample.  They want to do one on Mooch, but I don't approve of
the way they want to go about it, leaving him in a cage with an empty litter
pan until he goes.  To him that's just going to be punishment as he's very
fussy where he goes.  Been talking to Lauren in health + behavior about this
and she is also at a loss as to a good way to do this with her Meesha.

The first time around (last December) I brought the sample in with me - she
peed blood on a cushion I'd bought for her.  Of course I freaked and took
both her *and* the cushion to the vet.

The second time around, first of this month, she was being boarded and
wasn't using the litter box.  The vet said she finally peed just outside of
it and they noticed a little blood in her urine and got the sample thusly.

Good luck with Mooch!  Going to the doctor is no fun for any of us, and we
can't make our cats pee in a cup.

Its just as hard getting a sample from a young baby;
they fasten a plastic thing there, not exactly a bag,
but near enough, and then you wait!  and wait!  and wait!

Now that's a funny thought, the sight of the big bear-like Moochka with a
plastic thingy tied down there. :-)

When Natasha goes in for her tests, if she has any urine in her
bladder TED's techs can get it from her within minutes. I don't know
what they do, maybe put a catheter in long enough to get the sample?
The only times we have to do the "empty litter box" trick is if her
bladder is empty - then they give fluids and we wait.

My vet gives me plastic pellet litter to use when they need a sample. It
looks like the crystal litter, but of course doesn't absorb anything. It
works great!

That's so true, Jill.  I can get him to do just about anything, but I don't
think I can talk him into that ;-)

Our vet gives us a non-absorbent litter (brand name No-Sorb) to use in
a clean box to get a sample.  We have this setup *right now* waiting
for Mike to decide he has to go.  *sigh*   I have also read of people
using aquarium gravel for this.

Our vet has also (I think) stuck a big needle in poor Mikey's bladder
and gotten a sample that way before.  He sent me out of the room for
this, so I didn't see it happen, but I saw the big needle come out
before he asked me to go into the lobby.  Poor Mike!!!!!!

I'd heard of that, but my big guy is just so particular about where he goes.
Hmmm, wondering about the fish tank gravel idea...

Thanks Krista,

Bill, I don't have any suggestions, but we are sending purrs that you get
the sample without stressing the Mooch out too much.

Awww, thanks Marina.  Just sitting here ready for bed with him in my lap, I
read your post to him...

Purrrrrr...

Yeah, my little guy is particular too.  In fact, we had no luck
getting a sample last night, and are trying again.  *sigh*   I hope
you have better luck, and am sending luckpurrs, peepurrs, and
healthpurrs for your furry master.

I'm so happy to read you've found a food that Persia likes that is better
for her than Fancy Feast.

Is that just for cats who already have a urinary
problem, or can any cat have it? sounds good!
Maybe Wilson would like it,I haven't seen him eat
with real gusto since I first got him when he was
starving. Jean.P.

I suspect any cat can eat this - it's not Rx (prescription).  It doesn't
contain magnesium or ash so it doesn't cause crystal build-up in the urinary
tract.  You might try to find a small bag of it and give it a try with
Wilson :)

Jill, I think that's the one Jazz is on also. He loves it, and he hasn't had
any UTI or crystal-blocking problems with it now for over a year ::keeping
fingers crossed::
I'm glad you found something Persia likes.

Thanks!  She sure wasn't liking the Rx one the vet sold me!  He did mention
at the time there is an OTC Purina brand I could get for her and this is it.

I don't remember the name of the prescription type Felix got when he
had his blockage [this was about eight years ago], but he didn't like
it. He's been happy and healthy on his Science Diet Light [and his vet
OKed it].

Hey, that's great news. Purrs that her health problems will be
controlled with the new food.

OTOH, around here, the masters are still not happy with my decision to
stop buying meowmix and Fancy feast. The hunger strikes ended fairly
quickly, but Rocky is the only one who really seems to like the new
food - course he likes just about anything. Sorry to say, though, that
the change hasn't resulted in Little Bit losing any weight. She lost
half a pound while on the hunger strike, but now she's holding steady
at 11 pounds, which TED says is a little above her ideal weight. I'm
thinking that the next time I buy dry food, I'll try some of the
weight control Iams. They have dry iams out all the time for snacks,
and get canned iams twice a day, now.

Persia was on weight control Iams and actually *gained* weight while eating
it.

I am really convinced that canned food and weight control are necessary
together. Sugar prefers dry and is slightly tubby. Pearl could eat all day,
but she wants wet and eats plenty of it, Grant too. They do not gain weight
eating canned food. I seriously believe that high quality canned food and
very little dry is a better way for kitties to lose or maintain weight.

You're probably right. Little Bit eats mostly dry food, and she's the
one who plays/exercises the least - well if you leave the hoomins out
of it ;-)  I may end up cutting back on dry food, or maybe start
putting it out somewhere Sammy can get to but Little Bit can't reach.
Around here Sammy's on the skinny side, Rocky is about right, and
Little Bit is... fluffy.

That is a relief. Sheba seems to like her Purina DM; but she always
acts like she is starving for something tastier, like with fat in it.
I hope Persia doesn't miss her old food at all. Of course it helps
that you don't have other cats that eat regular food. :-/
