The gist of the above article is that a stray cat was turned in to San
Francisco's Department of Animal Care and Control. They scanned the
cat, found a chip, and discovered that the cat belonged to a woman in
Bradenton, Florida - 3000 miles away.
The cat, a black short-hair named Cheyenne, was adopted by a woman in
Bradenton in 1997. A few months later she (Cheyenne) disappeared. The
woman hung fliers and ran ads, but had no luck in finding her cat.
Until she got a call from her local shelter earlier this month...
Authorities think that a former neighbor probably decided to keep
Cheyenne for themselves, then moved to SF. Interestingly enough, the
shelter Cheyenne was adopted from was one of the first in Florida to
microchip its animals.
Authorities at Animal Care and Control believe that a former neighbor
of Edwards' probably found the cat, decided to keep her and then moved
to San Francisco. Cheyenne is in very good condition. No one has
contacted Animal Control claiming to be Cheyenne's owner, but the
microship provides legal identification of her true owner in Florida,
wh retains legal rights.
Right now they're trying to find a way to get Cheyenne, who is now 10
years old, back home. Animal Control can't afford to ship her to
Florida, so workers there have been looking for a volunteer traveller
to carry her on a plane trip with them.
SF Animal Control's website is at
http://www.sfgov.org/site/acc_index.asp
There's a link to information about Cheyenne there.
They've also got a link to Cheyenne's Bradenton animal shelter:

Amazing. I didn't know microchips were that popular 7 years ago. I have to
wonder about the validity of a chip that old, or if the scanners are the
same now, or read the number wrong, or if there were duplicates. lol Call
me a skeptic.

On the other hand, it would be quite a coincidence that the chip identified
the cat as belonging to a woman 3000 miles away, who had in fact lost a cat
that looked just like that one...

Well that's true. I guess I just found it so farfetched that my mind
couldn't accept it could have happened. But I guess it could! :)

Not sure chipping was that popular 7 years ago, but I know it's not new
technology. After 10 years, IMO the cat belongs to the people in San Fran.
The cat wouldn't have any idea what to think/do with the people in Florida.
Might be some new bugs to chase, I suppose. But mostly it would be
bewildered.
