My cat Sundance can be a real hog at mealtime, so Rebecca has to be
assertive about getting her share. I was watching them at dinner the other
day. I give them their food in two dishes so they can each have one, but
Sundance decided he wanted some of what Rebecca was eating (it's the same
food!) and went to the bowl she was using. When she was ready for another
bite, if she could get her head in the bowl, fine. If not, she would try to
gently push his head aside with a paw. If that didn't work, she would nip
his ear -- that always worked!

ROFL. We have a piggish cat here: BT Rowdy. But he is the alpha cat and
always gets his way. Nobody is going to nip *his* ear.

LOL That's like my Rocky. If there were 10 food bowls out with
identical food, he'd want the one someone else was eating out of. He
doesn't get into any fights about, just pushes his way in and whoever
was there first backs off or goes to another bowl.

I feed Apache and Dakota in different bowls, each in their own
place. Dakota is a greedy boy and is always convinced that
what Apache has is better than what he has, so he raids her
bowl. When he does, Apache just moves to his bowl and
cleans it out.

Maybe their bowls could be placed in separate rooms. And maybe feed
Sundance first and once he is busy, sneak the second bowl to another
room for Rebecca and close the door. Even with ear-nipping, she might
not be getting enough food.

I understand the concern. I was concerned about, too, but they both walk
away before the bowls are empty so I think they're getting enough. Often
Rebecca will continue eating after Sundance has had enough. (Also, the vet
said they could both stand to lose some weight!)
I first learned about Sundance's piggish tendencies shortly after I got him
and his sister Cassidy (since deceased). I had been told that they got a
certain amount of canned food every day, and when I gave it to them I saw
that Sundance was gobbling it all down. Since then I have kept a close eye
on this situation.

Sundance sounds like he might have some wild genes coming to the fore.
In a pride of lions, the males get the best food first, then the
females and cubs get the leftovers.
But I am glad to hear the food is plenty for all. I have seen people
just put a couple dishes down for several cats and let them squabble
over it. And there was always a scrawney one or two that got little or
nothing.
I use a gravity feeder for the kibble for the boys. And Sheba get s
her DM separately. Fortunately, the boys don't like it. Of course she
trained them not to like by swatting and growling. ;-)

Mischief is such a PIG when it comes to food. You can totally see
when she walks a little bulge on either side. I've tried cutting back
on food, but when I do, my other cat Imp loses weight and Mischief
stays about the same.
i've tried feeding them separately, but they don't eat everything at
once. If I use two bowls, they eat out of each other's bowl. *sigh*
She's not obese, but she is a tad on the plump side. Imp is nice and
trim, but he's still big and heavy.
