Mike's depressed

LOL - 20 Apr 2004 07:17 GMT
So said TED at our appointment this morning.  We had taken Mike in
ostensibly to have his thyroid levels checked, but mostly because our
little guy is just not himself.  He's having some nice times in the
spring weather, but mostly he just wants to sit with meowmie, and he's
never been a lapcat kind of guy.  He's not lethargic, really; he's
just not interested in much.  He doesn't want to play or explore, just
sit.  He also has not gained any weight back after 2 months on
Tapazole.

I was worried that TED wouldn't be able to tell what we were talking
about, as it's mostly small behavioral things, but he could *see* that
Mike just doesn't feel right.  Ironically, that may worry me even
more.  TED thinks that the Tapazole is not quite doing the job - we
have tweaked the dosage *again* even without waiting for the blood
test results to come back, which will take a few days.  TED is also
checking Mike's liver enzymes, which we will also hear about in a few
days.  We may take Mike for the radioiodine treatment, though our vet
wants to do a "thorough" check of his heart before he will refer us,
because though Mikey's heart rate is down from what it was before the
hyperthyroidism was diagnosed, it's still high, and TED is worried
about cardiomyopathy.

I don't think Mike feels *bad* exactly; I think he feels old.  He
seems to have lost his sense of invulnerability.  He's always been a
scrapper and ready to take on any cat/dog/human/whatever that crossed
his path.  Now he's sticking close to home and close to mom, and seems
to be needing *lots* of security and reassurance.  His conviction of
his invincibility has always driven me crazy, but his losing it is
making me very sad.  I have been mourning the loss of my MightyMike,
and I want him back.

TED said that Mike reminds him of "a person who has given up on life."
But Mike's not that old, and he's not that sick.  The last few months
have been very hard on him, with his misery before the diagnosis and
the adjustments in his Tapazole dosage, but as far as I know he's
otherwise basically healthy, and I don't know why this has had such an
apparent mental effect on him.  TED's other feline hyperthyroid
patient was there this morning also, and she is doing wonderfully well
on the Tapazole.

What do you do for a depressed cat?

I'm sorry to hear about Mike and am hoping you get his meds figured out and
that he starts to feel better soon.  Hopefully it's just temporary.  Purrs,

I'm so sorry that Mike is still feeling so under the weather. I wish I could
do something more, but the best we can do is send heaps of feel-better-soon
purrs to Mikey and soothing ones to his worried Meowmie. We are hoping that
the Tapazole-tweaking will have some effect on Mike's mood, as well, and
that Mighty Mike will soon be back to terrorise his hoomins.

What Marina said.  I'll get Smokey and Mistletoe on the purring and Scooter
will, somewhat reluctantly, send a small dollop of doggie drool.

{{{{Krista}}}} I'm so sorry, and understand your worry.  I wish I had
some sage words of advice, but I suspect you and and TED will have to
work on the medical end of things, and hopefully that will help the
emotional side.  In any event, I am sending purrs that Mike feels
better soon.

Me too. I am hoping maybe the adjustment and maybe some extra play time
might help. Has anything else changed recently? Poor baby.

*Any* play time would be a change for the better; he's just not
interested, poor darling.  He does perk up some when he gets to go
outside and does play a little, like chasing the squirrel Saturday,
but outside time is pretty much weekends only, since he only goes out
when I can be home to keep an eye on him.

The only change, really, is that he's had such a hard time with the
thyroid problem for several months.  I don't doubt that we will get
that straightened out, whether through medication or the radioiodine
treatment, and am hoping that it will resolve this issue as well.  I'm
just ready for a resolution *right now*, I guess.

Well, I think depression is part of thyroid problems. My mom always
remembers when they took her medication down, when they were first
diagnosing her thyroid problems. She said if she had had a gun she would
have shot herself and she BEGGED them to put the meds back where it had
been. I hope everything gets adjusted soon.

I am a veteran of both depression and thyroid problems, and I am
telling you that they might coincide, but depression on its own is not
necessarily a symptom of thyroid problems.  Of course, a full
physical, and checking all functions isn't a bad idea when you feel
depressed, but fixing just the thyroid problem won't necessarily fix
someone's depression.

Cheerful purrs for Mike to feel more catly; curious and mischievous
and playful and full of energy.

I'm so sorry about Mike having such a difficult time, Krista!  Hopefully,
Burel kitty purrs will help a little!  I read an interesting medical article
awhile back that correlated thyroid problems in people with depression
although it does seem unclear which condition triggers the other.  I wonder
if an antidepressant exists that would help Mike out?  You might do a Google
on depression and thyroid issues in cats and see if you can find something.
Meanwhile, please know we're pulling for Mikey and for you!

Thanks, Christine - I am sure the purrs will help tremendously.  :-)

I will look into the thyroid and depression angle - thanks.  I assume
that just feeling physically rotten for an extended period could make
him depressed; I guess my worry is that he hasn't bounced back like
I'd have expected.  I will look into an antidepressant if this keeps
on, but I am hoping that resolving the thyroid problem is going to
cure the depression.  I am just hoping it happens *soon*.

Lots of snuggles and whatever he wants. I also think that they really feel
what you are feeling and you need to make an extra effort to not show him
that you are worried about him. Try to be upbeat around him, lots of
coo'ing and talking to him in a *happy voice*.  :) I know, easier said than
done. I'm sorry Mike is not himself and many purrs that he feels better
soon.

That's a very good idea - thanks!  I probably do say things like "poor
baby" too often, just because the sympathetic-mommy-tone seems to
soothe him.  But maybe soothing isn't what he needs most and being
more energetic would engage his interest more.  I'm going to try it.

Well, first you send said cat lots of purrs and headbutts from his buddy
Hobbes and the girls as well as scritches and chin rubs from the human
members of Hobbes' family.  I'm wondering if Bach Flowers would help in
any way.  Laura, are you around? You know best about Bach Flowers, but
if anyone else is familiar are there any flowers that address this type
of problem?  We'll keep you in our purrs and prayers Krista.

We went through something like this in California when Berfert saw a
bird commit suicide by flying into a plate glass sliding door.  He
wouldn't go into the kitchen for six weeks or so, even to play with the
water dispenser.  We had to move his food and litter box so that he
would be able to eat and use the facilities.  He spent most of his time
under Mike's bed watching to see if something were coming after him.

With Berfert we were able to give him time.  And though he still isn't
the invincible cat that he used to be, he did get most of his sense of
humor back and still likes playing tricks on us upon occasion.

I wish I knew what you can do for Mike, but I don't have any ideas for
you.  Paper mousie games like in one of the previous threads?  I wish I
could help you.

Thanks, Pam.  I think Mike has perked up a little bit on his 3rd day
of tweaked Tapazole dose.  (DH agrees - I don't *think* this is just
wishful thinking.)  He's been a little more active today, and once
when DH walked a little too close to him he made a grouchy little
yowl.  We are hoping this may signal the return of the Brat Cat.  :-)

PS:  Poor Berfert!  I am glad he did get better, poor little guy.
