I was out last evening collecting the kids from their various after school
events and picking up dinner.

It was the kind of night you don't like to be out.  The classic dark and
raining night.

A few blocks from home a little poodle trotted across the street in front of
the car.  I wasn't going very fast but the road was slick and it seemed like
I skidded forever before I hit her.  She looked enough like my own dog to
have been one of her littermates.

I couldn't bring myself to even get out of the car.  My grandson got out to
check and her owners who heard my brakes squeal were there immediately.  She
was already dead.   She had accidentally gotten out and was headed for the
park across the street from her house.

I don't know how I get the picture out of my head.  I don't know if I should
go to see the owners today or send them a note or what I should do.

And I think my own ancient pup Sugar and my sweet Rosie cat have sore ribs
from the hugs.  Or holding on to then for dear life as the case may be.

Oh, Jo. I am *so* sorry. What a nightmare for you. I think a note would mean a
lot to the owners, and I think it would do you some good, too. It's not your
fault, but I know how awful you must feel. Hugs to you.

How horrible for you, Jo. Many purrs for you and for the dog's people. I
think they would appreciate a note from you, if you can bring yourself to
write one.

I can't imagine any worse thing to happen to an animal lover than to
be (even inadvertantly) responsible for an animal's suffering and/or
death.  Purrs for the poor poodle's peaceful passage, and for her
grieving owners.  And for you, too-  what dreadful luck.

Oh I am so sorry Jo. I don't know what to tell you. I think I would indeed
write the people. I think it would help you feel better to express to the
people involved how you feel. I think it might help a little. I'm really
sorry for all of you. So sad.

I think you need a few hugs too, Jo.  I'm so sorry.  I remember my Dad
hit a dog once, and it tore him up.

Adog jumped out in front of my sons car once
we were driving at normal speed it was a big dog, my
stopped and got out of the car tocheck it was ok, it
hadn't even been knocked to the ground, but he still wanted to make sure,
but the dog nearly tore him apart,
well it bit his hand, he still tried to see if it had an address
on its collar, but of course it wouldn't let him near it

Oh, {{{{{Jo}}}}}}} I am so sorry.  This has to be so devastating for
you.

If you can, I think it would be good to go see the owners  I would
think they would be appreciative that you stopped, and how you feel,
and maybe you can help comfort each other.

You will probably grieve this little one as though it was your own,
and that's okay.  Do what you need to do.  And realize that no matter
what, accidents *happen*.  And there is usually not a thing we can do
to stop them.  You did the best you could.

Blessings,

I remember when one of our dogs got out and was hit by a car.  The driver
couldn't help it. The dog ran right under his tires.  The poor man stopped
and he had tears in his eyes.  It meant a lot to us that he stopped and that
he cared.
I think a note to the owners would be a nice gesture.

Jo, this is terrible for you and the poor poodle's owners.  I think they
would appreciate a note.  And as others have said, it might help you, too.
Accidents happen but that doesn't make us feel any better about them.  Bless
you.

Jo,

I am so sorry you had to go through this. It was an accident and you
shouldn't blame yourself. I am sure the owners appreciated you stopping
to check and I also think they would appreciate a note from you.

*hugs*

{{{Jo}}} what a rotten thing to go through. Try to remember that it
wasn't something that you could prevent, sometimes sh*t just happens.
It's hard to say which would be better, sending a note or dropping by
to offer condolences, but I would appreciate either. Maybe write a
note and drop it off. You might find the owners would appreciate a
hug, but then again they may be going to the anger stage of grief.

Whatever you decide, we're lighting a candle here, and sending purrs
to you, the passengers who had to witness it, and the sad owners.

the little poodle.  Many purrs from us to help heal your heart and please

note.  Hugs,

Yes Jo, do go and see the owners,My dog Ralph was
run over years ago in a torrential downpour
and he was a streetwise dog, the man who rang said his
girl friend was driving and told us where he was my
son went to pick him upwhile my daughter and I sobbed
our hearts out with arms wrapped round each other. He phoned
us but it would have been better had he come to tell us. It
wasn't raining when I let him out,I  couldn't go to work that morning,
I'm so sorry for you as I know you must feel so bad,
but try not to, the weather caused it and the dog running
out into the road {{{{{{Jo}}}}} Jean.P.

What horrible luck, Jo. And it was just bad luck, there was nothing anyone
could have done to prevent the accident, so don't go through the "if only"
game if you can help it.

Clearly, though, you cared about this little life, and I think it would do
you good, and the owners good, if you let them know how bad you feel.
Perhaps a nice print out of the Rainbow Bridge poem? Or a short note, or
even participate in the burial arrangements for the dog? Your grief for the
tyke is just as real as the owner's grief and you need to express it in a
way that is meaningful to you.

Purrs and hugs,

Yowie

Purrs for the poodle's safe journey to the Bridge, for her owners' grief on
their loss, and comforting purrs for you.  There's no way you could have
avoided it.  A note to the owners would be a nice touch when you can bring
yourself to write it.

Thank you all for your support.  After beating myself up for a while today
wondering if I could have avoided the pup by swerving rather than locking
the brakes and skidding, I remembered why you don't swerve unless you have a
very clear view.  There could always be a kid running after the dog.

I found the family and told them how sorry I was this evening.  So they at
least wouldn't think it was someone who didn't care and just left.  It went
OK.

I bet they feel better knowing the facts and that it wasn't someone who
didn't care. I can also imagine some tears during that. :(

I am so sorry this happened to you - please don't beat yourself up
over what you couldn't help, though I know you can hardly help feeling
bad about it.

If you can write a note to the owners, it might start to ease the pain
for both of you.  We are sending our best purrs to everyone involved.

I'm so sorry. That's something I've been terrified would happen to me since
I started
driving. Knowing there was nothing you could have done doesn't really help.
Sending purrs for you and the poodles family and lighting a candle.
