Betty's meowmie

This is bedtime story as told to me by Betty.  I don't know whether
it's based on fact or is fictional.

When I was just a little kitten, my meowmie picked me.  She looked at
all my brothers and sisters and said that I was the best behaved.  I
wouldn't tire her out or bite or scratch.  She picked me up and I
snuggled against her cheek and purred.

From then on, my meowmie was always with me.  I loved my meowmie and
spent all my time with her.  I would nap in her lap as she sat in her
chair, and sleep on top of her when she lay in bed.  She was almost
always in her chair or in bed, so I never needed to sleep on anywhere
but on meowmie.  She told me that I was good kitten, and I purred.

As I grew into an adolescent kitten, meowmie told me that my being on
her all the time was bad for her circulation, but she was just
kidding.  She needed to rest more than before, so we spent more time
napping together.  Meowmie said that I was a good, quiet kitty, and
that I never woke her up, except when I washed my bum while sitting on
her tummy.

One day, someone came to visit meowmie.  Meowmie tearfully told me
that we had to part.  Meowmie had to go somewhere that takes care of
hoomins, but places that take care of kitties are different.  I was
put in a carrier and I cried and cried for my meowmie.

At the kitty shelter, I was put in a little cage.  There were lots of
strange smells and noises.  There were lots of other kitties, but I
couldn't see them very well because they were in their own cages.  The
hoomins there kept my cage very clean, and fed me good food, but I
wanted meowmie, and I wanted a pillow.  I used my litter pan for a
pillow, even though it was kind of hard.

Sometimes, people would visit.  Sometimes, they would even look at me,
but I stayed in the back of the cage.  There was no place to hide, and
it was all still very new and scary.  Still, I loved it when hoomins
scritched me.  Meowmie had always scritched me.

One day, daddy came.  I didn't know yet that he was daddy.  He would
stay at the shelter for a long time, and he gave me lots of scritches.
He told me that I was a very good and beautiful kitty, and he even
took pictures of me at the shelter, and put them my own web page!

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/Takayuki9z/shelter1.html

Daddy finally took me home - a new home, and I was so happy!  Life is
like an adventure.  Just like with meowmie, I sleep on daddy's lap,
and on daddy's tummy, though not as much as before with meowmie.
Daddy moves and plays more than meowmie did, and he seems more like
another kitty than a hoomin sometimes.  He showed me how to sleep in
the sunshine in front of the window, how to catch bugs, and how to
play with the cat dancer.

So daddy is very different from how meowmie was, but I think I love
them both the same.  I sometimes wonder where meowmie is, and I wish I
could tell her that I'm okay.

Lovely story -- give Betty some scritches from us -- you are both so lucky
to have each other!

What a sweet story. Betty, your meowmie knows you are loved. I know she
does, in her heart she knows.

When we got Rosie a year ago, I realized this was the first pet we had
acquired that has a good possibility of outliving one or both of us.

Kind of an unnerving thought.  Just get past needing guardians for the kids
and now need them for the fur babies.

Good kitties will always find good homes.  I hope.  If I die, I'm
pretty sure Betty would be taken up by friends, and given an excellent
home.  Maybe I should start writing a will just to make sure. :)

My in-laws do not currently have pets, but have been assured that if
they get another one that survives them, I will either take the animal
myself or ensure that he/she goes to a good home.

Betty (and Tak) that is a beautiful and sad (in a way) story.  I'm so
glad that you and your paw paw found each other and wish you could tell
your meowmie that you are living the good life again.

It's true that life is good.  Betty has been very lovey-dovey lately,
and it's spring and the birds and squirrels are busy.  She's in my lap
looking very content.  Cats are very good at looking content.

(snipped for length)

Awwww.  It was a wonderful day when you and Betty found each other, no
matter what may have come before.

I've always thought it very sad to think of an animal missing its
previous humans, with no way to say it or do anything about it.
Whether Betty's previous life was happy or sad, I'm glad she has you
now.  :-)

I thought the same thing about pets missing people!  I think that
Betty had a happy kittenhood, because she came to me already quite
expert at enslaving humans.

Aww, what a bittersweet story. Betty is lucky to have you, Tak. Aren't you
glad we bugged you to go to the shelter?

Exceedingly happy. :)  It's nice having a kitty in your life - soft,
adorable, and sweet.  And almost always in my lap while I'm reading
RPCA.

Dear Tak,

Thank you for a beautiful and touching story.  I think it's a
tribute to cats that they can elicit such wonderful feelings from a
man.  Guys are supposed to be tough, but it doesn't mean we can't be
gentle.  I hope my better nature shows up in the things I write as
well as yours showed up in that article.

Thanks,
O J

Yeah, we're pretty tough, but not so much that we're brutish. :)  I
figure there are plenty of guys, like for example, Dave Y, who are
much tougher than I am, but still love their kittenpussums.

... That was a beautiful store Tak, thank you. I too hope our kids love
it here and perhaps we help them not miss meowmy so much.

What a sad little story, as I sat here reading it the tears dripped down on
my top and still are dripping, her pics are lovely, I once had a black and
white cat like Betty, so glad she found a lovely daddy or I would be a right
mess.

I think that Betty was trying to tell me about hope, but it does come
out as a sad story, too.

Personally, I only know and remember the happy parts of the tale.  I
remember bringing home a little mewing carboard carrier from the
shelter a little over 11 months ago.  There were little white mittens
pawing at the air holes.  I opened up the box, and Betty popped up and
looked around.  She trotted all over the house, and I'd never seen a
creature so happy and joyful - examining and rubbing on everything and
trembling with excitement.  She looked at me like "It's you!", and
trilled and did little wheelies.  From day one, she owned the house.
The moment I sat down, she was in my lap.  The moment I went to bed,
she was on top of me, to my surprise.  I knew that a cat might want to
share my bed, but I didn't think that I would be slept on!

Right now, she's sitting in her "seal" position, which she does when
she's been in one position in my lap for a while, and one side of her
body feels too hot.  She really is a good kitty.

Betty has been blessed to have a wonderful new home with lots of love.
I occasionally hear of elderly people who have to give up their
beloved pets; and it always breaks my heart. My son swears he will not
put me in a home; that he will move heaven and earth to take care of
me. And if I go, he will take care of my cats in the manner to which
they are accustomed.

You have a good son.  I'll bet that your cats are used to quite a lot.

How sweet!  I'm sure that Betty's meowmie would be happy to know that you're
her daddy now.
