Just curious if anyone out there that has a cat (or two, or three....) that
is NOT afraid of the vaccum cleaner? All of mine run as soon as they see
it. Well except for Bob, but Bob is deaf so just kind of looks at it if it
nudges him.
Anyway, one of my foster kittens actually chases it and climbs on it. One
of the others sits and watches, but won't get too close. I've thought maybe
he was deaf too, but don't think that's the case (I've seen him come from
another room to chase the vaccum). I just thought this was unusual since
all of mine run and hide (hmmmm....I should start running it when I eat, I
wouldn't have such a large audience then!)

Its possible that the one that runs to it is deaf, but feels the vibration
when you turn it on.
Than I cannot imagine, but have heard that there are dogs and cats as well
that like to be vacuumed. I can bathe my cats, but they would skin me alive
if I were to try to vacuum them.

Three of my four do the disappearing act when the petinator (i.e., vacuum)
comes into use - the fourth, Weeble, is wary but curious, watches it from
the back of the sofa or the kitty tower, where it's safe.

Pearl is like Weeble, but Grant and Sugar hide if they see me picking stuff
off the floor! They know the vacuum monster is sure to follow.

Cinder disappears, but the formerly feral and now fearless Rosie calmly
observes from wherever she may be at the time. She also goes to the window
during thunder storms, just to see what's going on and, I think, to dare the
storm to come and get her. I hope Mother Nature never decides to take her
up on it because we live in a hurricane zone.
Cheers,

It doesn't faze Shadow; Shamrock is only mildly annoyed by it and Bonnie is
terrified.

Little Bit used to not mind the vacuum, I'd actually vacuum around her
while she laid in the middle of the floor and watched. Then, maybe
because Sammy ran away from it, Little Bit started running to the
other room, too, whenever it came out.

I think it's natural for them to be afraid, as it's said that nature
abhors a vacuum.

Re. the OP:
Mike isn't afraid of the vacuum; he keeps a wary eye on it, but I
usually have at least one cat-shaped area that goes unvacuumed because
he won't move.

Single-mindedness is all very well in cows or baboons; in an animal

attachments.

My cat, Cheetah, almost seems to want to help me vacuum. He follows the vacuum
around wherever it goes and gives it this curious look. Of course he is also the
weirdest cat I have ever known. He eats fruit and pickles for gods sake.

Cheetah sounds like Z - that cat loved food, in particular cantalope and
fruit smoothies. He never had pickles though (even though I love them) but
he did eat green olives (they all do/did actually). Does Cheetah have a
preference in pickles? Dill? Kosher? Sweet? :)

Jazz isn't afraid of the vaccum cleaner, but he won't approach it either
when it's being used. He'll just sort of lay there and glance at it. But
then he's always just sort of laying there and glancing at everything <g>

Peter likes to be vacuumed. I discovered this one day when he refused to
budge from his couch cushion so I could vacuum it. I ran the brush
attachment over his back thinking he would run, but he actually rolled over
so I could vacuum his belly.

I'll have to try that on mine! :) Bob wouldn't mind, but then again, Bob
doesn't mind much of anything (he's really unique). Bob just wants fed, I
could probably serve him food on the vaccum itself.
Ok, kind of off subject here - anyone out there ever say they were going to
"run the sweeper" instead of the "vaccum"? Or is that another regional
thing? (We call them sweepers here, not sure why).
Tx for all the input, I enjoyed reading them! Seems Yertle (thats the one
that chases the vaccum) isn't alone.

Where I grew up (northwestern U.S.), a sweeper was not electric, but rather
had a handle like a broom and some kind of brush thing that picked up dirt
when you pushed it back and forth on the floor. I only have vague memories
of how it works, so can't give a better description. A vacuum was an
electric device that does the same thing, only with suction.

Mine have always been apprehensive of it, too. However, my
sister-in-law (or rather my nieces, when small) had a cat who'd come
running whenever she heard the machine! When she was a curious kitten,
she was stalking the upholstery attachment one day, so my SIL turned it
around and vacuumed her! She LOVED it, so ever afterwards.....

My Rosie (RB) was not afraid of the vacuum, she didn't like it though and I
would get the look of death from her whenever I vacuuumed. Snoopy, Rosie's
sister has always been terrified and will hide as soon as I open the
cupboard where it is kept. Milo & Bagheera don't like it either but don't
seam quite as afraid. I think the only answer is to vacuum as little as
possible.;-)
