Fat Cat on Hunger Strike After Owner Goes Away

Berlin, Fourth Reich (Bild) - An obese cat six times the normal weight has
gone on a hunger strike at an animal shelter after being taken from his
owner who fed him four lbs of minced meat daily.
Mikesch, weighing nearly 41 lbs, was brought to the shelter April 1 so
overweight he could not take more than four steps without becoming
exhausted. His elderly owner was at the same time taken to a nursing home.
Shelter officials said 6-yo Mikesch is so fat he cannot clean himself and
suffers from heart trouble. They said he felt lost without his owner and
stopped eating altogether when he was put on a diet to gradually lose
weight.
A shelter worker will take Mikesch home with her for 10 days to help get his
appetite back, shelter head Ruff said. "The cat had a good night in her flat
on the first night and that's giving us hope his condition will improve."
Ordinary cats usually weigh between six and 12 lbs and eat no more than
about 10 ounces of food each day, vets say.

Thanks for posting that update. I think we all ought to all target our
collective purr power for this poor kitty. It's just so sad. I don't want to be
negative, but I sure don't feel good about his chances to regain his health and
lose all that weight. He's grieving for his owner and old home on top of his
health problems.

You're very perceptive.  I wish this kitty could get quickly into a
loving home environment-- that would surely help his recovery.

Purrs for the big guy. :( If he's going to make it he's going to need some
seriously dedicated slaves and lots of purrs.

You're right - we will send health and serenity purrs to this poor

Tears filled my eyes for that poor bewildered German cat, in his mind he's
lost everything.
Purrs that someone's love and care will coax him back to mental and physical
health to live a long cat-life. Only good thing about all this is that his
notariety may insure his quickly obtaining a good forever home, if his
health holds up.

Thanks. I should've put that in originally, but didn't think of it in time.
He appears happy enough in the photo, not in pain or anything. I expect,
since he's only 6, he'll bounce right back as the excess poundage is shed.
Given that Bild has a *huge* distribution over there, I suspect the shelter
already has a list of people offering him a home.

I showed Killer the picture and told him that if he doesn't do more sit-ups
he's going to look like that. I received one of *those looks*...

Lol! That's Squeaky's personal goal in life, to weigh that much. The
ironic thing is that my little chubbette who is overweight is more
active than the three other slim, average size cats. She runs through
the house chasing the others to play, she slams onto the cat tree and
performs gymnastics, and leaps for the feather on a stick. The others go
"yawn".

Oh, Killer's active enough - he runs, jumps (sorta), scrambles... All mostly
in response to being tormented by Chaos, who's 1/4 his size and a smartass.
He just can't bend in the middle. At all. Squeezing his torso feels like
squeezing a wee hairy oaken keg.

Maybe Squeaky is healthy at that weight, then? If she's fit and can run
and play, why is it a problem that she's chubby?

Oh, she definately is healthy and I don't consider it a problem at all.
Even though her blood work is good, the vet has suggested she lose a few
and others have commented on her "solidness"; I just think she's
"rubenesque". But she's happy, active, affectionate and glossy. Why
would I want a svelte, crabby, kitty who whines for food constantly
instead of playing like a kitten (They were all six this March). If she
ever approaches the "obese" mark and can't/won't keep up her activity
then we'll see about doing something about it.

I'm hoping that there's a mistake in the reported weight.  I saw the
picture when the story first came out and my reaction was that there
was no way the cat in the picture weighs 41 lbs based on pictures I've
seen of other overweight cats.  It's hard to judge from the picture,
though.

There was another photo when this story first came out that I found on google
news. A woman was holding the cat against her body, stomach facing the camera.
It was unbelievably huge, and in tthat photo, looked every ounce of 41 pounds.

I've never seen a cat that wide, even in a photo. Still, he reminds me so much
of my old cat Cherokee. He was overweight too, but only about 25 lbs. I wish a
had a better pic of him, but he died before I got a digital camera. I think
that's why this cat's plight disturbs me so much.

He was my alltime favorite cat, ever. He was mean as the devil and not afraid
of anything. He was fat when we got him, and he was only 3. He lived to be 17.
The people that had him relinquished him because he was beating up their dog.
He was PTS March 30, 2000 for kidney failure.

That's what I thought when I saw the pic. Course we'd have to see them

I tried to show these pix to Little Bit to show why she's on a diet,

Oh my. That's awful. It makes Cherokee like a mere slip of a cat. Poor thing.
I did read that Guiness has stopped accepting applications for "Fattest Cat."
they were afraid it would encourage people to *make* them fatter. Good for

Oh, what a gorgeous kitty! But he sure doesn't look happy. I hope they
can bring his weight down safely. Obviously, he needs to lose some so
he can have mobility again. But I worry about fatty liver syndrome,
which is a real danger when a cat, especially a fat cat, loses too much
weight too quickly. It's important to monitory his liver function very
closely if he's on a strict diet. I hope they're being very careful
about this.

I hope he gets a little massage in there too. I was always SO impressed that
massage was considered part of university students health benefits in
Germany. I tried to convince my college that it should be in the U.S. too,
but we Americans are SO wierd about that being a "health" treatment. I live
in hope however.....

LOL. Well, that is a relief. I do worry about liver failure, because
I've seen a few cats go through it, and it's a very scary illness. Also,
because people are so weird about fat, I worry that they might try to
hurry along the weight loss too much. Crash diets aren't great for people,
but they can be deadly for cats.

But if he's in a shelter, then they undoubtedly know this - and medical
care will be easily available if he needs it.

But, the most recent update indicates the cat has gone on a hunger strike and
is refusing food. That's a real cause for concern, and would likely kill him
quicker than the extra pounds.

Amazing progress, but now you've got me worrying about how fast he's
losing the weight. I don't remember now how long ago the first pic was
taken, so went back and looked at the link Sherry provided and it's
only a week old, so that pic must be old. But, like someone just
noted, since he's in a foster home with someone from a shelter I hope
they're monitoring him closely.
