jmcquown - 10 Apr 2004 15:15 GMT Scott McKenzie is?
Younger folks might not... he had a 'hit' in 1967. 'San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)'.
For some reason, a couple of years ago he and I fell into trading email exchanges. Just so happens he has a cat named Spider. From time to time, Persia will get an email from Spider. Spider sent Persia a rather funny email about my trip to Dallas. While I was taking a shower, Persia sent Spider an email which reads thusly:
"My human is currently occupied doing silly things like drenching herself in water; have you ever figured out why they do that? Why don't they just bathe like normal cats do?
I'm taking this moment to ask, what is your favourite food? I do my best to con my human out of things like chips and crackers. I go so far as to reach up and snag them out of her fingers if she isn't fast enough, hand-to-mouth. Once, I was lucky - she left a freshly grilled hamburger on a plate on the coffee table for less than 30 seconds. I managed to take half of it off the bun before she returned. It was a very unusual but tasty hamburger. It had sliced mushrooms and minced water chestnuts in it! I think I tasted some teriyaki sauce in there, too.
Silly human, she scolded me, then she started laughing. I don't think I'll ever figure humans out.
I have yet to steal a fish, but I have a plan. The weather is nice so I know she'll start grilling fish sometime soon. For some reason she won't do this when it rains, which doesn't make sense since she drenches herself in water daily. What's the difference? If you know, please tell me. It might help to speed up the plan for stealing some nice grilled tilapia or salmon.
Purrs, Persia"

Hopitus2 - 10 Apr 2004 15:27 GMT I remember that pop song....like the anthem of the 60's! Yes, cats are sneaky...and much smarter than us hoomins or d-pets. No wonder they are our short furry masters.

I loved it, there was just something meloncholy about the artist's voice that lent itself so well to that tune. And he has a cat named Spider! What a neat name.

He claims Spider is FAT and so is he! Scott turned 65 in January. He said he spent his birthday with Spider walking all over his back, giving him a back-rub! :)
He's is a really great guy to correspond with. He told me all about this "walk" he takes every year. You may know, his best friend was John Phillips from the Mama's & the Papa's. In fact, John's daughter, McKenzie Phillips, was named after Scott. John Phillips' father was killed in Korea and buried in Arlington National Cemetary in Washington, DC. Every year on the anniversary of his death, Scott walks from the VietNam Memorial, down to the cemetary across a foot-bridge (IIRC); lays a flower on John's fathers' grave, then walks back.
I'll have to ask what he does with Spider when he's on his annual mecca. I get the impression, but don't know for sure, that S. McKenzie resides somewhere in Arizona. He won't tell me for sure. He's probably afraid I'll show up with Persia and introduce her to Spider ROFL

Ginger-lyn Summer - 10 Apr 2004 20:13 GMT Cool! I still have my single of that song (gives away *my* age, doesn't it? lol!). Tell Scott and Spider the rpca crew says "Hi", and be sure that when Persia steals that fish, she sends some to Spider ;-)

Tell Scott and Spider the rpca crew says "Hi",
> and be sure that when Persia steals that fish, she sends some to > Spider ;-) > > Ginger-lyn Will Do! Here's what Spider wrote to Persia on 4/7:
"Dear Persia:
Please be careful when navigating territory anywhere near your human charge. She is in a state, known mainly to female humans, variously described as "lovesick," "euphoric" and "dazed." While in this condition she might very well walk right into and/or over you. She might even forget to feed you! If this happens, do not hesitate to call 911.
Be patient, Persia. Yes, she may seem foolish to you right now, but that's because she is in love, which for humans is similar to when cats are in heat, only a lot, A LOT more complicated.
More than likely, she been cooing, cuddling and babytalking to you even more than usual lately, especially when talking about a certain male human, whom you have not yet encountered, but probably will sometime in the future.
For that meeting I recommend a wonderful book called "The Silent Miaow," translated from the feline by Paul Gallico. The original feline text was written (typed) by a cat who believed that her fellow felines, especially the younger ones, needed a handbook on how to ingratiate themselves with human families, especially males. According to her, the ultimate feline weapon against human resistance to kitties is the silent miaow. But you probably already know that, don't you...
The next time Jill goes away to meet this man, demand that she take you with her. She won't, of course, but it will be fun making a fuss. She will probably board you again. OK, then let her. But this time, just as she turns to leave, look up at her pitifully and give her your most devastating silent miaow.
Actually, maybe you shouldn't do that at all. What Jill did took a great deal of courage; she risked her whole heart. In fact, humans often call what she did "leading with the heart."
Please keep me posted on your human's progress, Persia. Remember that she is in fragile condition, which means that now would be a good time to con her into giving you extra treats, expensive food, etc.
Love and miaows, Spider"

Told him you have a cat named Soncek and that your cat may well start sending email if you don't watch out! We'll see if he (or his cat, Spider) replies!

How cool! Are you thinking of inviting him to join the group? Spider may need a vacation/pirate voyage. :-)
------ Krista Who also remembers that song, and still hears it a lot
jmcquown - 11 Apr 2004 07:07 GMT >> Scott McKenzie is? >> [quoted text clipped - 20 lines] > Krista > Who also remembers that song, and still hears it a lot Unfortunately, Scott suffers from bipolar disorder (manic-depression) and sometimes months go by without him answering an email or sending me one. He also claims to be computer illiterate outside of email. So we just enjoy, vicariously via email, chatting with him and Spider.
