This article just shows how ignorant I am about geography. I always
assumed that if you got 355 miles from anywhere in NZ, you'd be swimming.

Kiwis Revel in 'Running of the Sheep'

from Times Wire Reports
Reaching for some of the glamour and danger of the Spanish bull-run city
of Pamplona, a New Zealand village ran 2,000 sheep through the middle of
town.
No one was chased, trampled or gored in the inaugural "Running of the
Sheep." And instead of seeking cover, most spectators helped stop the
shaggy mob from scurrying everywhere but the right direction.
As so-called organizer John Grainger predicted, the result was pure
chaos in Te Kuiti, 355 miles north of the capital, Wellington. The event
"was extremely ambitious, sheep being sheep, and people being people,"
one woman told local TV.

This event was shown on our local TV channel, looked really exciting.

We are a nation of 4 million people.

Thanks for posting these sites Christine - they are informative and
there are couple there that I haven't seen :)
On my first visit to the US I was amazed  at how little some people knew
about N.Z (understandable I suppose seeing we are such a small
country).  It started with our accent - "let me guess where you come
from, er er, you're English, right."  Me,
"nooooooooooo"  Person, "ah, don't tell me, I know, you're Australian,"
Me "Noooooo".   Person, gives up suddenly,"tell me."   Me,  "New
Zealand"    Person, strokes chin, "let me see, that's part of Australia
isn't it?"   Me,  "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO."   Person, "er, near Alaska?"   Me,
shakes head.   Person, getting  desperaate, "Holland".  Me, "Excuse me"I
find an excuse to end the casual conversation.

On the subject of sheep.   An interesting attraction in Rotorua is the
Agrodome (think that's what they call it) which features sheep.  Tame
animals from various breeds of sheep go up on the stage and are featured
with the black and white sheep dogs.

When dogs are working a lot of sheep packed in together they often jump
up and run around on the backs of the sheep and work them that way.
Tourists love watching it and then are allowed to come up on stage and
get their photo taken hugging a curly horned ram or whatever.  There is
also a shearing display and a complete woolly sheep can be shorn in
minutes.
I always laugh when I see them minus their coats, they are nice and
white and they seem to enjoy their new found freedom from all that wool
and bounce around.

I know what you mean, Bev.  A few months ago I gave a presentation at my
church about my visit to Australia.  The minister announced it, but she
said the presentation was about New Zealand.  I said, "Excuse me, but it
was Australia, not New Zealand."  She said, "It's the same thing, isn't
it?"  When I stopped laughing, I just said, "Not to Aussies and Kiwis."
