OK, so where was he? I knew he'd used the litter tray this morning, and he'd
eaten something, but he was gone. There was no way he'd left the house,
absolutely no way, every door and window had been shut tight all night.
Ade and I spent half an hour looking for him, then we had to go to work. We
opened all the doors around the house, so that he could get to his food and
litter tray, and left.
I got home four hours later. He was still AWOL. I searched everywhere.
Finally, something made me lift the sofa, there's a three inch gap between
the front of the sofa and the carpet.. He shot out, and made a dash for his
food bowl. I left him to it, and, a busy afternoon beckoning, set to work.
Half an hour later I went downstairs to make a cuppa. He'd disappeared
again. I looked under the sofa again, but he wasn't there.
Baffled, I went to the Post Office to post the press releases for the next
Cats Protection fundraising event, and the posters for it, to our volunteer
who distributes them. (I also made a quick visit into town to buy the new
Haven album .... ). When I got home, he was still missing. Again, I lifted
the sofa, but he wasn't there.
When Ade came home, we searched again, this time with the aid of a penlight
to shine around inaccessible areas. Eventually we spotted a movement INSIDE
the sofa. He was hiding in the padded arm of the sofa, and was unbudgeable.
We put some music on (that Haven album, btw, is brilliant), turned the fire
on, and settled down. Within half an hour, he stuck his head out from under
the sofa, and consented to be coaxed out all the way. It was like throwing a
switch! From 'hiding in cavities McCavity' he became 'love me, stroke me,
throw toys for me, tickle my tummy' McCavity.
At least we know now how he got his name, for most of today he has truly
been 'The Invisible Cat'.

When I first got Katie (RB) and Cinders, in early June of last year,
Cinders was afraid of me. Fortunately, that fear is now gone.
During that time, she was amazingly skilled at finding hiding places.
On one occasion, I was walking through the kitchen and heard a noise
from overhead. Cinders had managed to make it all the way up to the
top of the kitchen cabinets, over 8 feet off of the ground, and was
blinking down at me owlishly. She had apparently progressed from the
floor to the stove, from the stove to the refrigerator, and from the
refrigerator to the cabinets. Since then, she has either not had the
urge to go mountain-climbing, or has done it only when I was at work.

McCavity sounds so sweet. That's why my pal in the "no-pets" condo never
worries when an unexpected knock comes on her door.....all 3 large Himmies
propel themselves INTO her two leather sofas, and I don't mean on the floor
beneath. They remain there until the company leaves.

Cute! I had a foster kitten who got under the sofa once (Madeleine), but she
just sat in the lining. McCavity was actually in a tiny space between the
frame and the padding.

My mom had a kitten who would actually get into a mattress spring and
curl up inside it.

Aww, poor McCavity. Purrs for him to stay in the second mode from now on.
