Ha!  How cute!  In Australia they have the Easter Bilby instead of the
Easter Bunny :-)

Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered
in fur!

The Bilby is an endangered species whereas the rabbit is an introduced
species and is considered to be vermen.  Someone, I think it was a
conservation group, came up with the Easter Bilby idea a few years ago.

They're oddly cute little beasties - saw some on the
"Australian Wildlife Rescue" program on Animal
Planet a few weeks ago.

Yes, I think they're adorable.  I had been discussing this on another
newsgroup before my trip to Australia last April.  I met her while I was
there, and she presented me with a chocolate Easter Bilby.

They made the change because rabbits are considered pests down under,
rather than being thought of as cute, cuddly creatures.

I would have expected the Easter Bunyip. ;)
Eeeeek!

They have all kinds of odd critters Down Under. Someone sent me a
hilarious photo the other day of a woman in a supermarket leading a huge
kangaroo on a leash. The 'roo was wearing a muzzle, and the lady was
using his pouch to carry her groceries. I've been wondering ever since
if that could be real or was the photo faked.

Faked, I would guess.  They aren't friendly, especially the "huge"
ones, as you describe.  And we recently discussed how they can lose
their fear of humans and become pests in some tourist spots, and hit
you up for your lunch, but they aren't really "tame."  Since the pouch
is for carrying babies, I can't imagine that a roo would be very happy
about someone putting their groceries in them.

I'd say "faked" as well. 'Roos can be "tamed" like lions, tigers and bears,
but aren't ever really *tame*, despite how the show "Skippy" depicted them
(and hte 'roo in Skippy was actually a wallaby)

Sheep do that in the Peak District of England. I've been mugged for a cheese
and tomato sandwich on so many hilltops that I've lost count.

I'm still not sure; I went back and studied the photo a little closer
and noticed that the critter was also wearing handcuffs on his ankles
and his shadow was placed as it would be normally if it were a real
photo. The groceries in the pouch did look faked, seeming to be lit much
brighter. There's also a question as to whether the animal would have
been allowed in a grocery store.

Doubt it.  'roos are not the most 'friendly' animals and have been known to
kick their way _through_ people.  I didn't see the image being referred to,
but....
