Yowie - 29 Mar 2004 10:04 GMT Well, it was going to happen eventually.
I am no longer a Krispy Kreme virgin.
Da*n those things are good. A very kind friend transported them from the closest KK - over 2 hours away. He went to the drive through and asked for the "pregnant woman" pack. LOL!
So now Ihave a sampler pack and a plain glazed pack sitting on my coffee table, and I"m desperately trying to control myself from eatingmore until the other pregnant woman turns up to help me devour them.
Talk about heaven on a stick!

Bear in mind that one plain original glazed KK doughnut has 200 calories, of which 110 are from fat. :) But that's nothing compared to the Chocolate Malted Kreme doughnut that has 390 calories and 190 from fat!!!!

Yep...I wouldn't touch a Krispy Kreme with a 10 foot pole and wouldn't eat one if someone paid me to. If I want treats or gratuitous calories, I can think of a whole bunch of other stuff that wouldn't even add up to one KK. Yech! -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. Magic Mood Jeep? - 30 Mar 2004 05:17 GMT I'm with you, Britta - I don't really care for KK donuts. Must be because I used to be able to get all I wanted when my sis worked at one of their shops/bakeries - I just got burned out on them.

Must be because I > used to be able to get all I wanted when my sis worked at one of their > shops/bakeries - I just got burned out on them. I've actually never had one. I just care about myself too much to pollute my body with nutritionally empty, high fat, high calorie, overly processed foods. I lost 35 lbs 2 years ago and now feel so much better that I've just lost interest in junk like that. Besides, when you don't eat junk for a while, the cravings for it stop too. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! Victor Martinez - 30 Mar 2004 14:17 GMT > my body with nutritionally empty, high fat, high calorie, overly processed See, if I'm going to consume something that is bad for me, I'd rather it be worth it. Like that chocolate flourless cake I posted a recipe for a while ago. Chocolate, sugar, eggs and nothing else. YUM!

I just make it a point to avoid junk food. I have a slow metabolism so I have to be careful with that. I need to loose 35 pounds too, how did you do it? ;-)

It does sound healthier than a KK though. My idea of a treat is a juicy steak and a glass of red wine.

Besides, when you don't eat junk for a [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > have to be careful with that. A couple of months in I started lifting weights and that sped things along. I got more and more into it and changed my diet to high protein, moderate carb. I eat a lot of lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I cook all my own food from scratch and avoid white breads, pastas, rice, sugar. I also avoid packaged foods with additives, nitrates, trans fatty acids, etc. I take a mulitvitamin and EFA's (fish oil, flax seed oil). Now, mind you, I'm not good all the time. When I go to restaurants (mostly while travelling), I order a regular meal and drink wine and beer. I enjoy the occasional spicy martini and get drunk at all company sponsored pig roasts. But since I'm good 90% of the time, I enjoy my treats all the more and it doesn't affect my weight. I have goals to cut body fat even more and get better muscle definition. I am thinking of maybe taking some courses and becoming a personal trainer. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! You know, I've noticed that since I lost my job and have mostly stopped eating in restaurants, that my diet is *much* better than it used to be. Since I don't have the money for restaurants, and I *do* have the time for cooking, I eat tons of veggies, whole grains, unprocessed fresh food that I cook from scratch. I had no idea that the ticket to a better diet was becoming poorer! :)

I find I feel soooo much better, it's amazing. I have a ton of energy, zip around from here to there, run up an down the stairs, etc. Before, I was always really drained. Was thinking to myself that I must be getting old because I never had any energy. Now I feel like I'm about 19 again! jXwXeXrXmXoXnXt@sonic.net - 30 Mar 2004 22:05 GMT > See, if I'm going to consume something that is bad for me, I'd rather > it be worth it. I agree. I actually have a pretty healthy diet, all around, but that doesn't mean I don't like my sweets (ie, *chocolate*) and my fats. I try to live by the adage: "Live a totally healthy lifestyle, and you will live longer - or at least, it will *seem* that way." LOL. On the other hand, I don't want to die at age 55 (which isn't that far away!) from heart disease, so most of my meals are nutritious and healthy, and I try to get regular exercise. As far as vices, I'm actually pretty boring - don't smoke, don't do drugs, hardly ever drink. I have to push myself to exercise, though, so that's my biggest struggle. I'm not working right now, so I don't have any excuse (eg, "too busy")! :)

O J - 30 Mar 2004 05:20 GMT Hi All,
They say there's no accounting for taste, but in spite of the way some people feel about them, they leave me flat. I'd much rather have Dunkin' Donuts.
Regards and Purrs, O J

And nobody else makes plain donuts in quite the same way.
Actually, I don't eat donuts that much any more because they're so bad for you, but once in a while I'll have one. I used to occasionally buy a package of miniature donuts dusted with confectioner's sugar. Yum.

Hopitus2 - 30 Mar 2004 08:05 GMT Hey, Joyce, do they still have Winchell's Donuts in the area of CA where you live/frequent? Way back in '58 the *first* time I lived in CA, it was in Paramount (near northern tip of Long Beach...the Pike was still there!) and I worked as a donut baker in a Winchell's in Anaheim, right across the freeway from a very newish Disneyland. I can't remember whether there were Winchell's around when I lived in San Carlos and Sunnyvale.

AFAIK, there's a Winchell's in Santa Barbara [not in a great neighborhood, I don't think I'd recommend going there at night].

You do NOT want to be on East Haley at night unless you're in a locked car or looking for drugs or a transvestite hooker, and Milpas seems to be rather gang-ish territory.
I can't think of any city/town I've spent very much time in that didn't have some questionable territory.

Aren't they delicious? We had a KK store come to town just before Christmas, and my hubby, Dave and I went there to get some for a New Years Eve party we were going to. 2 dozen didn't last long!

Yoj - 29 Mar 2004 20:39 GMT > Well, it was going to happen eventually. > [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] > > <drool> I had heard about Krispy Kreme for ages. When I finally tasted a glazed one, I thought it was good, but I wasn't especially impressed. About a year later, I found that my local Albertson's supermarket has a case with an assortment. I tried the cream filled, and I was hooked! For a while, I found excuses to go to Albertson's two or three times a week, each time picking up two of the cream filled donuts, which I went home and immediately devoured. Finally I started looking at the scales. Now I limit my visits to one a week. I pick up three cream filled, but I eat only one a day. It isn't good, but it's an improvement. ;-) It really takes willpower to eat only one in a day, to stay away from the store most of the time, and to buy only three when I am there. ;-)

Marion - 29 Mar 2004 21:08 GMT > Well, it was going to happen eventually. > > I am no longer a Krispy Kreme virgin. When I read those calorie stats, I feel blessed that I was raised on good ol' Canadian Tim Horton doughnuts. Krispy Kreme has opened several stores up here (Toronto), and I've tried them a couple of times, but I can't stand them -- they're so SWEET! Just thinking of them sets my teeth on edge.
There is something about them, though .... even though I knew that I couldn't stand them, when I saw a rack of the boxes while I was standing in the checkout line of a supermarket, I couldn't resist. The first one was, well, nice consistency but sweet; the second was SWEET!!!; the third to the nth were a duty 'cos I couldn't throw them out. D'you think they put something addictive in them?

Up until a couple of years ago, I don't think there was any Krispy Kreme in Southern California. I heard when they opened one about 30 miles from me, and read that there were long lines of people waiting to get in. Then one day, I noticed that Albertson's had them. We have two stores from that chain in my town, and both have the donuts, so if you have an Albertson's near you, I'd check there first.
OTOH, you may be better off if you never discover their deliciousness. <G>

AFAIK, there are currently only 2 Krispy Kreme stores in Australia, although I'm sure they'll sprout up every where like Starbucks did. I don't mind Starbucks, but much prefer Gloria Jean coffee.

The flavor declines pretty precipitously after that. The ones in the stores are way beyond the pale in terms of freshness.
One of the things that makes them appeal so much to people who like them is that the KK stores turn them over pretty quickly (at least in the South, the KK stores have these well-known red "Hot Doughnuts Now" neon signs they turn on when a new batch is coming out)so that the ones you buy in the KK places are usually pretty close to their peak in flavor.

I like my doughnuts fresh and warm, right out the hot oil, preferably while walking round the open air market ..... but once they're cold, the same doughnuts are unpleasant.

JoJo - 30 Mar 2004 03:45 GMT Oh, boy, you're killing me, my mouth started watering as soon as I saw those two deadly words - Krispy Kreme. I have been on a diet since Thanksgiving and have managed to lose 22 pounds. Now I am major junk food mode and could really really go for a KK, or any sweet goods (my downfall). (FYI it's not due to the Atkins diet, it's the Healthy heart diet, limit fats)
I've been really good, my local grocery store sells boxes of them too (just the glazed), I advert my eyes and walk past quickly - I will not let them tempt my taste buds or my tummy! But now I am craving just one little donut.....NO I will not give in! Little Krispy Kreme devil, you will not get me! :)
