The results are in, it's not cancer!!!! It's a fungal infection that can
be fatal though. He's on Itraconazole, one tablet a day for the next few
months. He hates the pills and each one costs $5.
I'm just so very happy it's not cancer.
Thanks for all your purrs!

Yay, great news, even if the fungal infection can be as dangerous. Cancer is
always so frightening. Purrs for Tubby to endure his medication and get well
soon. And purrs for the poor hoomins who have to give him the medicine and
pay for it.

Great news that it is curable, even if expensive and Tubby has to put
up with awful tasting pills.
Continuing purrs for a complete recovery

That is good news...in a way. I never heard of a fungal infection
being fatal. How did he get it? Do the pills come in a generic brand?
Can it be passed on to other cats? I am sending prayers and purrs for
his well-being.

It's a yeast he somehow inhaled. Yeast/fungal infections are very hard
to treat. Unfortunately, this particular medication is brand new so
there is no generic equivalent. I've suggested starting a donation
during the farm market, I'm sure plenty of folks would contribute.

I would doubt it's contagious, plus he's an only child. :)
We appreciate the purrs.

Fungal lung infections are also fairly common in humans. Several
years ago, a doctor noticed a shadow in my lungs on a chest X-ray.
He called in a lung specialist. The lung specialist asked about my
medical history, in particular whether I had ever smoked (I haven't),
and decided to watch and see, rather than do an immediate biopsy.
One year, and a couple more lung X-rays, later, the shadow hadn't
changed any, so he concluded that it was a calcium deposit left
behind by an old fungal infection. As of several years later, the
spot still hasn't changed size, so the diagnosis seems to be correct.
I don't remember the name of the disease, but it was one he said was
caught from breathing dust from bird droppings, and that most people
caught such an infection at some point in their lives. The symptoms
are flu-like, so it is often misdiagnosed by the patient. It
generally isn't life-threatening, unless the patient has already been
severely weakened by some other type of infection.

I think this is probably the fungal infection that Tubby has.
http://www.mould.ph/cryptococcus_mould.htm
AIUI the treatment can take quite a long time (months) and is not
cheap.
Purrs and healing thoughts for Tubby.

Yup, that's the one. Cryptococcus. Notice the name of the yeast, crypto
means death in greek. :(

Not that it matters in the long run, but 'crypto' means hidden,
secret, or unknown. 'Coccus' is a bacterium with a spherical shape.
The word cryptococcus means:
> cryp·to·coc·cus (kr¹pt
-k¼k
s) n. Any of
> various yeastlike fungi of the genus Cryptococcus,
> commonly occurring in the soil and including certain
> pathogenic species, such as the causative agent
> of cryptococcosis. --crypto·coccal adj.

Hi Victor,
We use Itraconazole a lot in cats with ringworm infections
(also a fungus). It is also available in a liquid form
that is kind of cherry flavored. The liquid is usually used
for fungal infections of the mouth, but works for all fungal
infections. It is a lot easier to use this form for cats -
both in dosage and administration.
Cherry doesn't seem to be a cat favorite flavor, but they
don't hate it as much as the pill form and giving an accurate
dose orally with a syringe is much easier.
