Cheap catfood = unhappy kitties

I am seriously broke this week so I had to buy a 3.00 bag of catfood
to get by until wednesday when i can buy a bag of their usual Science
Diet.  All 5 of my girls are very upset with me and I have never seen
leftovers in their bowls hours after a feeding. This morning I opened
the closet where I keep the food and filled the first bowl which is
Pebble's and she turned her nose up, looked up at me, then went to the
closet and looked in the tin to see if that was all there was to
offer. It was so funny but I was like I am sorry, you'll have to hold
out another day or so. I can't wait until its time to scoop poop. I'll
probably be gaging from it.
Hopitus2 - 09 Mar 2004 21:07 GMT
Don't beat yourself up........s**t happens; we get broke once in awhile and
have to deprive our furry bosses of their usual fine dining, earning their
ire. If you leave the food in the bowls they will eventually eat it (but
hope you don't live in hot climate like ours). Cats are stubborn but we have
to support everybody and hang in there.

heh - have you seen the Whiskas advert with the gorgeous
tabby cat trying to tell his human he wants fed while his
human is eating chinese take-away?  Human finds there's
no catfood, runs down to the local convenience store where
they don't stock Whiskas - buys some cheaper stuff and
puts the label from an old can round it, serves it up - and
the cat runs out the house in disgust.

Now as it happens, my two won't touch Whiskas (if "nine
out of ten cats prefer it" I am owned by TWO "tenth cats")
but if I buy something other than what they *will* eat, I
get sulks and hunger strikes that go on for days.

Whiskas and Friskies are the only foods they sell in most stores here in
Thailand.  Vino will eat it (he's not fussy) but I don't want to feed it to
him 'cause I think it's probably crappy food.  So I've been having people
from Canada bring me cans of Iams and Science Diet in their suitcases for 3
years.  Also, I have managed to on occasion find some Iams, Nutro and SD
here for outrageous prices but when I do find them I buy every can in the
store.
Probably not a good advertisement for Whiskas ;-)

Where is the Whiskas made, Britta?.

If its made here in Australia (or NZ) there are strict guidelines about what
goes in it. While I wouldn't call it the best quality wet food around, the
Australian-made stuff doesn't seem all that bad from my POV. Besides, Shmogg
eats it (most of the time) and that will do for me. The only "better" wet
cat food available in the supermarkets around here is Dine, and from all I
can see, there is nothing but the price that distinguishes Dine from
Whiskas. Ok, occasionally Shmogg starts turning his nose up at Whiskas -
which is when I buy Dine, but he's also been known to turn his known up at
Dine - so we go back toWhiskas. I don't consider it "cheap and nasty" (thats
what generic brand cat food is!) He also has a bowl thats always got Whiskas
crunchies in it, and he seems pretty darn healthy for a 14(is)yo cat.

I think of Whiskas as the best wet food here.  The cats would be
mortified if I brought anything else home.

You're probably right, unless you start feeding Denes or somesuch. the
thing to remember about European pet foods, is that all pet foods by
European law, have to be made of human grade consumption meat - it might
only be the stuff that cheap sausages etc are made of, but the brand pet
food here is far better quality than in the USA. Hence, 95% of UK owners
get their wet pet food off the shelves in a supermarket. And like your
owner - Tiger would kill me if he didn't get his fix of rabbit whiskas
at least twice a week!

Yes, those rules apply here in Oz (and I believe NZ) as well.

We still need to make sure that there's not much cereal and extra's
(flavouring, colouring etc etc) in the tin, but in general terms, our pet
food is safe enough for humans to eat.

Whiskas makes rabbit flavour?  Wow, I've never seen that before.

Not just rabbit flavour, but Whiskas "WITH" rabbit - there's a
difference. If a tin of petfood says "with" something, it needs a
certain % of that meat in it. (Not sure how much). If it says "Rabbit
flavoured" then it's just flavouring on beef or somesuch.

It's the only Whiskas that all 3 cats truly "love" as opposed to
"put-up-with & eat". As for the Rabbit *flavored* Felix, Tiger won't
touch it with a 40ft barge pole.

I've not seen rabbit flavored or rabbit as an ingredient in any cat food
here in the Eastern United States.  I'll ask when I next go to the Pet
Supermarket.

I seem to remember that, at least in Finland, a petfood saying "with"
something, the percentage that had to be this ingredient was 4%. But
then again it's Friday evening and there's been a long and dreary week
of work so my memory on catfood issues might be compared to swiss
cheese...  :)

In the UK it does.

My two still won't eat it.

LOL - neither will mine. Cat food of desire right now is Royal Canin "Sensible
33" for the feline of delicate digestion ;-) As a certain black-furred and
one-eyed ladycat is also known as Ms. Bulimia, who needs no excuse to
artistically decorate a carpet... it's working quite well as she's not doing it
as much. Of course, tomorrow could be an entirely different matter ;-)

Ok, I just checked and it is made in Australia.  I do feed it to Vino
sometimes, in between the Iams and Science Diet to stretch those out a bit
more.  When looking at the labels of ingredients, I would prefer to feed
Iams over Whiskas.  Although I just checked Science Diet and the ingredients
don't seem that great, so maybe I'll phase it out.  I used to be able to get
Nutro, but the store has closed down :-(  Nutro had the best ingredients out
of the stuff available to me.

Can you get the new Purina ProPlan foods? They're not as good as Nutro,
but they're not too shabby.

Pro Plan is the *only* food Bootsie will eat. I agree with you, it might not be
the best food on the market, but it's still good quality. It's hard to find
here, though. The only place I can find it is PetsMart in the city.

Started to ask where you found it, but you answered the question
before I could ask.  Have you've tried the Petco down in Wichita
Falls. I haven't been there, but figure it might be closer, though
maybe not since you're closer to OK city.

(For those who don't know, Sherry lives not to far where where I do,
so we have the same problem of no readily available big stores.)

I had to go to the city  today to take DH for a procedure on his back, and have
to go back tomorrow to pick up Biskit. It's 104 miles round trip. How far is
Wichita from Lawton? I really rack up the miles on the car lately. While I was
there, I went to Petsmart to get the usual....Four (25 lb.) bags of litter, two
jugs of dry Proplan, three cases of  canned cat food, two cases of dog food.
An impulse purchase of a new feather wand and 2 new snails. Grand total, $110.
But most of it will last a month. Plus paying for Biskit's surgery  tomorrow.
(I was absolutely afraid to ask what it costs)
But I digress. (Yes, Joy, I'd like a little cheese with my whine, please)
Pity, party of one?

Sherry

Sounds like about the same distance for me to head south as it is for
you heading north. Like I said, I haven't been to the store in Wichata
Falls, but according to the computer search I did it's 51 miles one
way.

Sounds like you make enough trips to the City so that it wouldn't make
much sense to make a special trip south.

No, I definitely can't get them here.  But I can get Dennis to bring some
from Florida when he goes in April and then we can get some more from Canada
when we go home in the summer.  But then again, I'll probably be bringing
Nutro.  Just so upset that the store that had it here closed down :-(  I've
saved one can and am going to take it to other stores to see if they can
order it.  I just have to do it on a "high patience" day, because the
communication can be quite frustrating.

For sure. Cats have survived, and even thrived, on cheap food. They'll be fine.
Maybe they'll appreciate their Science Diet more now! (on second thought, nah)

Ahem. Let's not even go there....the Evil 3 are all "blubbery" dark-colored
cats; their TED calls them "overweight" and they eat only Rx food for
"overweight" older felines. Their hoomins hope this will lengthen their
lifespans; who knows? As for the overweight hoomins, they still have
choices, and these are not always good ones. But they mostly try.

I just realized that I need to get some different food for Robin. He
is still growing some at fifteen months. The dry food I have is Senior
formula and He gets a teaspoon of sheba's high-protein dry food. I
think he is too old for kitten food; but i could get him some Nutro
pouch food in the Adult formula. That would help make up for the
Senior dry food. Or am I figuring wrong?

As for the hoomin diet...well...I have cut back on fats; but I am not
giving up my chocolate! <G>
