Since our kitties are all quite fond of spending time in the back yard,
we have a cat flap in the back door. It's got a little control knob that
allows us to set it to allow the kitties to pass through freely, exit
the house only, enter the house only, or lock it closed completely. We
leave it set to "open" when there's a human home with them, and when we
go to bed at night we set it to "closed" and drag a plastic bin full of
kitty litter in front of the flap.

Either Samuel Kitten has taken his previous name of "Houdini Kitten" to
heart, or one of the girls has decided to branch out. Last night when
Nancy and I returned home from running errands the litter bin had been
pushed aside, the control knob was set to "out only" (just a hair short
of the "open" position), and the two kittens were out back. Whichever
kitty turned the knob did so almost perfectly, just stopped a little
short of what they were trying for.

I guess it's time to weight the bin down with more litter!

This reminds me of a stunt Sammy pulled last fall. I also have a pet
door, but my guys pretend not to know how to use it. I say pretend,
because they'll paw at the door and meow pitifully at me. If I refuse
to perform my doorman duty, they will then enter the apartment through
it. I say enter, because Sammy is only allowed out when supervised. I
keep the sliding glass door shut enough so that they can't go out when
I don't want them out.

OK, you can probably guess what I'm going to say, but here goes
anyway. Last fall Sammy had been telling me she wanted out for several
minutes. Then suddenly it became too quiet. I looked over just in time
to see her tail going through the door. She had pulled that glass door
open, and was making her escape.

LOL! Neither of them has developed opposable thumbs, yet, have they? Then
you should really worry.
