In our house it's the females (Luna and Maya) that hate all other cats
who com nearby. The males don't seem to care much, but the girls really,
really hate the other cats. Maybe it's a maternal instinct of sorts?

You may be onto something. We're pretty sure that Spot is a female since no
pets around here are ever fixed and she doesn't have the "parts" that you'd
expect to see in a male. So maybe it's Spot who hates Vino and is the
instigator of all their glaring and yowling. She does yowl a lot and throws
herself at the windows, Vino never does that. He usually just sits there
looking concerned.
Today was a really strange day for cats. First off, Vino was downstairs and
awake all morning until about 2 pm. This is very unusual because he usually
sleeps from right after breakfast until the afternoon. Then there was the
chocolate cat who came by twice and slept under our picnic table on the
patio, and then I saw Spot in the yard several times too. Normally I'll
only see one of them and only every few days. Hmmmm, maybe the mothership
is calling them out to a meeting?
