purr request for a new job

John F. Eldredge - 21 Feb 2004 18:47 GMT
I am back in the job market again, unfortunately.  I work for a small
software-development firm that also produces a radio show, and two
major clients decided to go with other software instead of renewing
the licenses to use our software.  My work schedule has been reduced
to two days a week, with a corresponding drop in my paycheck.  The
company president is planning to concentrate on the radio show for
now, rather than seeking new custom-software clients, so I am
preparing for an all-out job search.  It has been 15 years since I
last had to do so (the change from my previous job to the current job
went without an interruption between), so I have a mild case of
stage-fright.  I have enough financial reserves for a couple of
months of reduced wages while I job-hunt, but not much more than
that.

The main annoyance at the moment is trying to find if any of my
resumés survived last year's house fire.  If not, it will take me a
while to track down the addresses of all my former employers, and the
dates when I worked for them.

Many purrs for the job hunt to go well and produce results soonest. It seems
to me that it only gets harder the older you get. I would like to find
another job, but dread writing applications and going for interviews.

Purrs are on their way.  I hope you find the resume soon.  Updating a
resume is sooo much easier than recreating one.  You might do some
Googling.  I understand there are a lot of job-matching websites these
days.

I do hope you find something long before your savings run out. After 19
years at the same job, I was laid off. I had no job hunting skills at
all. And I was scared witless, too. After several horrible jobs,
(Including over a *year* out of work, I landed the one I've had for 5
years now; a very good job. Best of luck!

There are websites which will give you an idea of the new look in resumes
these days. For instance, my last resume listed all employers going
backwards in time for 10 years (the given criteria in '97). I notice that
many job app. forms at present want only the last 5 years worth of employers
listed....you may be surprised at how things evolved since your last resume.
Probably time to make a new one anyway.

That's a good point.  Also, a "functional resume" is appropriate for
someone who is older, has gaps in employment, or has worked for a long
time at one place.

I have a home-based word processing business, and one of the things I do
is prepare resumes.  In a functional resume, you list job titles and
describe duties under the employer's name, but you put the length of
time you held each job, rather than the dates.  For instance, if you
worked for several years at the same place, you were probably promoted
during that time.  You would list each position and the approximate
length of time you held it, along with the duties that are most
applicable to the job you want to get.

Best of luck to you! I'll have all the furkids here purring up a storm
for you.

Seems like that job situation is contagious. I just learned today that
the company I've been doing contract programming work for has decided
that my services are no longer needed. I guess Monday I'll make some
calls and see if some of the over-the-road driving jobs I was interested
in last year are still available.

I can sympathize. I just did two interviews in as many days [and Bob's
still having trouble even finding anything to apply for or get an
interview on], and do have a second interview with one place on
Thursday. Felix sends purrs and Avery sends coos.

That sounds just like what we're experiencing ourselves.  We've been loosing
customers at a steady rate for years now, but we always managed to find new
ones or increase the business our biggest account was giving us.  But that
largest customer decided to go with another service provider on July 1,
2004.  Another technician got laid off on Thursday.  That shows to us all
that our turn is coming too.

We all hope that the new company will hire us.  We'd be doing the same work
for the same customers, but with another service provider.  All this may
sound cryptic, but bottom line I'll be laid off on June 30 and hopefully the
other company will hire me on July 1.  That'd be the best case scenario.

I'll tell Cashew (my Traditional Seal Point Siamese cat) to do some heavy
duty purring for me.

I had originally prepared the resume on computer, but that was about
15 years ago (when I got the offer for my current job, I was still
employed by the previous company and hadn't updated my resume yet).
Since then, I have had a couple of hard drive failures, so it looks
like I am going to have to compose my resume from scratch.

Having lived in Nashville, Tennessee, for the last 28 years, I would
prefer to stay here if at all possible.

I have worked as a programmer/analyst for the last 18 years,
sometimes doing system administration duties as well.  My skills are
more on the technical side than on the human-relations side, so I am
looking for technical rather than adminstrative work.
