PETA strikes again...

I don't know how you all feel about PETA's antics, but I wanted to share this
witth you. It's really quite funny if you think about it.
There''s a town here called "Slaughterville." PETA has stepped in and is
lobbying to get the name of the town changed, due to the negative implications
of the name. (BTW, there is no slaughterhouse in Slaughterville. It's just a
name.) They have suggested the alternate name be "Veggieville."
PETA has offered to subsidize the town for their trouble by providing free
veggieburgers to the school cafeteria. They showed the town council meeting on
the news. You should have seen the reactions of the townspeople, most of whom
are just country people. It's very rural.
I swear, this is no joke. It's true. All a calculated stunt for publicity, I'm
sure thhough.

Veggieville?  LMAO!!!  That could reflect negatively on the town's
inhabitants too...ummm... are they all vegetables?  LOL!
I think you're right about it being a publicity stunt.

"Veggieville Vegetables" or something. LOL!!

I saw that on the late news, myself. I agree, has to be a publicity
stunt, which I found funny, though if I contributed money to PETA I
might be p*ssed off.

I had never heard of Slaughterville, which is in Oklahoma, BTW, south
of Ok City and had to check a map to find out where it is. The way I
heard it, the town was named after the Slaughter brothers, early
settlers and store owners.

I thought that must be it, Slaughter as a name and not as an action. But I
think the analogy would be Harvestville, not Veggieville. :o)

Sheesh, maybe you should join PETA. You'd improve it 100%.

Veggieville.  That's hilarious ...such a weird story that I would have
suspected it was a troll, but I knew it was legitimate when I saw that
Sherry was the author.

I saw that in local newspaper here, but refrained from comments on it due to
the fact that my home state has been a laughingstock and butt of jokes since
last presidential election at least. The only state I know of to equal FL's
infamy would be the Golden State....but not for the same reasons.....we
share only the warm climates predominant in both as to similarities.

Ever since I moved to California, my mother's razzed me about living
in the Breakfast Cereal state [take out the fruits and the nuts and
you still have the flakes], and about living south of the Manson-Nixon
line. :-)

Oh, Lordy. You should see the new movie "Cockfighting" witth Wilford Brumley
and I forget who else. I'm surprised the White Trash/Redneck/Ignorant by Choice
police haven't come in to shut the whole state down, if they thought it was an
accurate depiction of the people here.

No, I heard the story as well although I have no idea from where.  I
think it is a few weeks old.

Where's "here"? Sorry, I can't remember what state you live in.

Oh god, that is beyond parody! You couldn't write a satire about that!!

Yeah right, for how long?

I can imagine! What were they saying? I'm really curious.

Too funny!

"Veggieville" conjures up visions like the "walking dead" of 60's horror
movies such as "Night of the Living Dead", etc. Gen-X and Y'ers: if you
haven't seen it, rent it @ Blockbuster for an evening of hoots......the
hairdos alone generate hoots of their own. LOL.

And don't forget those "talking veggie" movies! :)

I forwarded this story to a friend of mine, and here's what she had to say:

"I understand they also went after the town of Fishkill. Which is
doubly ironic because in this case, the word "kill" means "river,"
so the town's name is actually not "kill fish" but "river with fish
 in it."

I don't think they've gone after the Catskills yet."

LOL!!

Sigh...being from near that area originally, I certainly hope they don't
decide to take that absurdity to that level.  I guess Otterkill will be
on the hit list as well...;)  PC (not Pine Cone, btw...:) ) takes itself
to new levels of silliness....even for a publicity stunt, that's kinda
pathetic....

And speaking of silliness, I haven't seen that classic of all time
"Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" in any of the movie "lists".  Tch...
how could *anyone* overlook that....;)

Hope everyone's having a good week!

they saw an otter....;)

Well, first you have to remember this is Oklahoma, and a big beef state where
ranching is a major industry. Small town rural people are for the most part
simple, friendly folks for whom PETA's agenda is just too weird. They pretty
much stood up and said, "Thanks, but no thanks, we like our T-bones and our
leather." One lady who was a Slaughter said, "Whut am I 'sposed to do, change
my name to Veggie?"
(disclaimer: I don't mean "simple" to indicate either uneducated or not
intelligent. You all know what I mean.

Ridiculous, aint' it?  "Slaughter" may be a person's name, not
necessarily an "action."  Back in ancient days when I was a kid, there
was a fine baseball player named Enos Slaughter.  Should he have been
"Enos Veggie"?

We have a Slaughter Lane here in Austin, maybe we should call PETA... :)

Tom was born in Fishkill, NY. The first time I heard the name I thought,
what were they thinking when they named that poor town??? Tom then
explained to me (like he has done to dozens of people over the years)
that kill means creek in dutch, so the local settlers actually called
their town "fishcreek"... :)
