Trees are down, hundreds of people evacuated from their homes and most
of the roads closed. Stock are stranded, milk dumped and 100 years old
trees uprooted.
To make matters worse some nasty Aussie intruders have arrived at our
port (Port of Napier). Fire ants - hitherto not seen in New Zealand
are being hunted down!!!

Oh dear Bev! I know what it's like to be threatened with flooding.
Let's hope the fire ants are rooted out and don't gain a real foothold in NZ.
By the way, my half-Kiwi grand-niece/nephew has not yet arrived. I have a
bottle of NZ red wine & NZ white wine at the ready, so I can toast the birth...
as and when. Is it possible to have a word with some Maori spirits and ask that
the birth happen *soon* and that mother and child are both well & healthy???
Cheers, helen s

Can't give you Maori spirits, but can send you heaps of purrs to make the
baby come soon (oh, so you are going to be a great-aunt? Why didn't you tell
us??) and for mother and child to come through with flying colours.

Does this mean you're going to be a great aunt.? Why didn't you say
something? You shouldn't be so shy and retiring.

Do they think fire ants are sustainable in NZ? They don't seem to be
able to live in colder climates in the US. They are all over the South
and Southwest but can't make it up north. Of course, I don't know if
those are the same kind.

Hey don't blame us Aussies for those! They're an import to here as well, and
we're trying to eradicate them as much as you guys are.

Oh my - many purrs to the people affected by the storm. And special
BTDT purrs to the people battling fire ants - you and the kitties stay
far away from them! We are plagued with the nasty critters here.
I once for some reason was reading a FAQ about insects on some pest
control company's website (memo to self: get life) wherein the
question was posed about how to tell whether ants were fire ants or
regular ants. The answer advised that it's immediately apparent which
is which if you are bitten. And so it is. Ow.

Ow indeed ! I'll never forget my first encounter with the evil little
buggers. I was down in San Antonio in the late 80s for Army training.
For some reason the normal physical training (PT) field was
unavailable for our PT test. So, we used an alternate field that
hadn't been used for awhile.
It was a typical setup, half the class started to do pushups at one
station while the other half started doing sit-ups, rotate and once
everyone was done do a two mile run. Well, the station for sit-ups
turned out to be covered, and one of the guys ended up having to go to
the dispensary - he sat down during the briefing and was covered
with ants before they all started biting at once. I started at the
push up station, and ended up with about a dozen bites on my hands.
Their bite produced immediate pain, and left me with small blisters
which lasted for weeks.
After the first attacks we ended up doing the push ups and sit ups on
the paved running track rather than risk the grass field.

Thanks for the purrs and best wishes everyone. The rain has continued
(look at the newspaper link again) and one man had his life saved by
clinging to a swimming cow!!!! Damage now estimated to be 100 million
and rising and more rain predicted for the rest of the week.
I suspect fire ants would live just fine here, it's a fairly temperate
climate - no snow here in Napier. They are laying bait for them to find
the nest.
Helen, hope the half kiwi grand-niece arrives safely, I didn't know you
were going to be a great- aunt :)

My thoughts & pryaers go out to those affected. Flooding isn't funny - it's
scary and dangerous.

Thanks - no news yet. I have a couple of bottles of NZ wine sitting there,
begging to be broken open to toast the baby's arrival ;-)
