Smart...or just weird?

I have an adolescent Norwegian Forest Cat (Birgitta Deilig) who has
several odd--and mostly amusing--behaviors. One thing she does that
I've never seen before (and I've had a lot of cats) is that she eats
with her feet.

I used to give her moist food much of the time, but I had to stop. She
would scoop up a bit of food in her paw and then eat it off of her
foot. In itself, this was just cute and funny. Unfortunately, rather
than licking her foot completely clean, she would nibble a bit and
then shake her foot to get the remainder off. This caused cat food to
fly all over everywhere. It stuck to the walls, cabinet fronts,
refrigerator door, etc. and dried. I got so tired of cleaning up after
her that I switched to dry food.

She will try to pick up the pieces of dry food with her foot, too, but
she only succeeds on occasion. She usually just ends up getting it out
of the bowl and onto the floor, where she'll pick it up with her
mouth. This still causes considerable mess (lots of teensy bits of dry
cat food on the floor), but it's much easier to clean up!

I'm not sure if this behavior is an indication of intelligence (most
creatures who manipulate things with their feet/paws are very smart)
or just weirdness. Anyway, she makes me laugh and I adore her.

Natasha does this too! She mainly drinks with her feet (insert foot
into water bowl, lick water off foot) which is kind of gross because
whatever is on her feet ends up in the bottom of the bowl. :p It
doesn't help with her kidney problem either - TED says she doesn't
drink, she "moisturizes".  But on occasion she'll also eat with her
feet. She has dry food, and when she drops it it ends up either on the
floor or in the water dish.

I told my parents years ago that she did this but I don't think they
believed me. Over Christmas my dad saw her doing it. He stood there
for about 10 minutes, watching her eat and drink, shaking his head and
muttering "I can't believe this....."  ^_^

I have never seen any of my cats picking up food with their feet, but
they have all shown the behavior, at one point or another, of
drinking by dipping a foot in the water, and then licking the water
off of her foot.  I wonder if any wild species do this, or is this
"foot-drinking" limited to _Felis domesticus_?

Spooky does this, and in his case it is the technique he has always
used to steal food out from under the nose of the dominant cat, but he
seldom eats any other way.  Spooky is an abject coward, but he prefers
not to have to eat the leavings of all the other cats, so he comes up
to the bowl at right angles to the dominant cat and drags food out -
literally from under the dominant cat's nose (or chin) - and eats it a
short distance away.  He drinks normally, but I have a couple that use
the licking off the paws method.

Nikki does the exact same thing. She snags food on a claw and brings it to
her mouth or, if she's not feeling very hungry, she shakes the paw
vigorously so the food flies away, so she can chase it and make it all more
interesting that way. Then she spends ages washing her fork... errrr paw.

Are you sure she's not part raccoon? <G>

Wait 'til she starts opening doors and cupboards with her paws!

Tigger (RB) used to do this as well.  And who remembers the "Arthur"
catfood ads that used to show in the UK years back?  Cat did the same
thing in those.
